Una is a Rights Agent at Susanna Lea Associates and am starting to build a client list. 

She grew up in London and graduated from the University of Cambridge with a BA in English in 2021. At university, Una was particularly interested in contemporary West African and South Asian literature. She started as an agent's assistant at SLA London in 2022 and now handles some translation rights and provides support with editorial work and submissions.

Una's favourite reads always set her at ease right away and draws her in with impressive and accessible storytelling, memorable characters or an original hook. Una enjoys writing which expands her worldview, makes her laugh out loud or keeps her on her toes with its twists and turns. She welcomes submissions from debut authors and would be keen to read across a wide range of genres and styles.

She is looking for literary, upmarket and book club fiction, and is always drawn to stories that explores the challenges and complexities of love and relationships in all its forms —within families, between friends or in romantic relationships. Una loves the way in which familial relationships are dissected in The Wren, The Wren by Anne Enright and the impact of the local community in Small Worlds by Caleb Azumah Nelson. She is always drawn to novels with a strong sense of community, whether they are unified by geography, culture, or in other unexpected ways.

Una has always loved reading international and translated fiction and welcomes submissions from authors writing contemporary fiction that engages with cultures and traditions from around the world, such as in voices of the deities in Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi or the subversive tales of Sayaka Murata. 

She is not looking for children’s or YA titles, science fiction or high-concept fantasy, but is open to submissions from authors writing in the speculative fiction space, and books with fantastical or otherworldly elements, be that magical realism or supernatural horror, such as Mona Awad's campus novel with a twist, Bunny. Una would also love to read more writing that engages with the natural world and reminds us of the limitations of human understanding.

In non-fiction, Una enjoys books that furthers her understanding of wider societal issues — nature and the environment, culture, and little-known history. Her recent non-fiction favourites are Eve by Cat Bohannon, Doppelgänger by Naomi Klein and Unearthed by Claire Ratinon.

How do I attend?

EITHER -
CLASSROOM OPTION - Attend one of our scheduled classroom locations, completing your Introduction to Phlebotomy Course over 2 days. You will also complete your Advanced Training at the end of the first day and your Competency Training at the end of the second day.

Our Introduction to Phlebotomy and Advanced Phlebotomy Training Kits are supplied at no charge when booking our virtual classroom training option.
If you would like to add one or both of these kits to your classroom training option then these are available to add at time of booking. Our comprehensive training kits each mirror the same equipment and supplies used in the classroom and both include detailed video tutorials, allowing you to continue to practice and "hone" your skills after you have completed your practical training.

VIRTUAL CLASSROOM OPTION- Complete your theory training online at home or work, then join us for a one day Zoom session to complete your Introduction to Phlebotomy virtual classroom training, followed by your Advanced Training in the evening of the same day. Our Virtual Classroom option includes two very comprehensive training kits - one for your introductory course and one for your advanced course. This official BRCGS course enables participants with an in-depth understanding of the Standard in terms of the protocol, requirements and how to audit effectively. Participants will gain competency to assess compliance to the requirements of the Standard, including fundamental clauses, statements of intent, how to undertake a BRCGS audit, planning of the audit and reporting of the audit. M02 - Aspirated and Vacuated Systems:
Open systems (Syringe & Needle), closed systems (Vacutainer & Monovette), Alternative closed systems, Using Monovette - aspiration and evacuated techniques, monovette adapter systems.
M03 - Specialised and Advanced Phlebotomy Equipment:
The centrifuge - overview. Safe operation and use. Managing a centrifuge breakage or spillage.
Equipment and practices in unusual situations.
Patients with special needs and requiring specific attention.
Equipment preparation for blood samples that are collected at
0 degrees, 37 degrees C and other non-standard conditions.
A look at advances in technology and how to use the latest devices.
M04 - Point of Care Testing:
What is POC Testing? Advantages, Disadvantages and Clinical
Outcomes. Comparison of POC with lab testing. 10 common POC tests. Roles for phlebotomists performing POC Tests.
M05 - Neonates and Children:
Sample collection from new-born to pre-adult. A detailed overview of legal principles of law including child consent and child protection for phlebotomists. Neonatal and child blood collection equipment.
A comprehensive look at heel and finger-prick procedures including
microtainers, lancets and capillary tube collection. Detailed heel prick procedure. Paediatric finger prick collection. The life-threatening hazard of over-collecting. Communication techniques in differing age bands.
Consent and the law. Basic principles of lawful consent for neonates and paediatric patients. Child protection.
Detailed analysis of neonatal and paediatric blood collection including Guthrie card collection. Neonatal bottles - colours and tests. Paediatric blood gases collection.
Butterfly needles - when to use. Blood tests during pregnancy. Neonatal blood screening - nine conditions covered. Bilirubin in neonates.
M06 - Geriatric Patients:
The challenges of phlebotomy in older people. Understanding skin changes and venepuncture implications. A profile of common
geriatric blood tests. Age related problems. Procedural precautions.
M07 - Special Procedures:
Drawing blood from back of hand. Drawing blood from lower limb veins. Managing the unwilling or difficult patient. Managing the psychiatric patient. Managing the isolated patient. Non-routine blood tests. Managing the latex allergy patient (type 1 and type 4 reactions). Latex indicators. Sample handling - non-routine procedures. Drug trials and research projects.
M08 - Special Tests and Sample Handling Procedures:
A look at sample collection at specific times of day and night,
samples that are protected from light, collected on ice and
collected at body temperature. Procedures for each group - collection notes, analytic time, optimal collection time and notes for each group.
M09 - Advanced Phlebotomy Tasks:
Additional procedures. Maintaining POC equipment. Stock control and stock rotation. Quality control. Data entry. Product evaluation. Training and competency evaluation.
M10 - Alternative Environments:
A step-by-step look at non-clinical phlebotomy environments including private testing, DEFRA, forensic and police, cord blood collection, DNA analysis, veterinary services, overseas and volunteering.

1 - Welcome, introductions and overview:
- Classroom - health & safety briefing, schedule overview.
- Virtual Classroom - audio/visual checks and registration. Unpacking and overview of your training kit.
2 - Syringe and Needle (open system): Correct use and applications.
3 - Monovette (open and closed systems):
Using the Monovette system in aspiration mode - correct use and applications.
Using the Monovette system in evacuated mode - correct use and applications.
4 - IR Vein Detector:
Demonstration of the IR vein detector for assisting in detection of difficult veins.
5 - Veins in back of hand:
Detecting suitable veins in the back of the hand.
6 - POC testing:
Point of Care Testing - use of glucose meter to demonstrate a typical POC test procedure. Correct use and overview of other POC test devices.
7 - Using lancets (finger collection)
We look at the correct use of lancets for POC testing and whole blood micro-collection.
8 - Using lancets (heel collection)
We look at the correct use of lancets for neonatal blood spot tests (Guthrie Test).
9 - Capillary collection
Using glass capillary tubes for micro-collection. Correct use and handling.
10 - Microtube collection
Correct use of BD Microtainers (and similar micro-collection bottles) - collection and handling.

Discernment Formation for Course Leaderswith Rachel Overton and Nick HelmThis programme aims to enable course leaders to develop or sharpen up discernment processes within formation programmes for spiritual directors from all traditions.&nbsp;A previous participant says:&#39;This programme really helped me to find a language with which to fully&nbsp;understand discernment processes for myself and for my facilitating the development of others.&rsquo;&nbsp;Discernment is not something that we &lsquo;do&rsquo; at certain moments of decision in life.&nbsp;&nbsp;Rather it is the stance we should assume in every aspect of life and can be articulated in the question &lsquo;how am I centred and responsive to God?&rsquo;As course leaders and people responsible for the formation of spiritual directors, we need to be aware of our own discernment processes if we are to enable others to grow in their ability to discern well.&nbsp;&nbsp;Such awareness also enables us to offer congruence between the formation programme we are a part of, the nature of spiritual accompaniment and being faithful to God in life.&nbsp; &nbsp;Over the course of the four day sessions, we will enable participants to engage with questions such as:&nbsp;<ul fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;"><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">What do you pay attention to within your own experience?&nbsp;</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Why do you pay attention to that?&nbsp;</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">How do you respond to what you notice?</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">What choices do you make?</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">How does all of this apply to you personally, your role as a spiritual director and your role in the formation of spiritual directors.</li></ul>&nbsp;These will be explored in relation to the &lsquo;triangle model&rsquo; of relationships within spiritual direction &ndash; a model which helps to sharpen awareness of the multiple aspects of discernment that we need to pay attention to.The programme will be experiential, involving small group work as well as plenary sessions. &nbsp;Participants will also be expected to take time to reflect and continue to work with their own process in between sessions.By the end of the programme, participants can expect to:<ul fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;"><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">be more aware of their own process and language of discernment</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">have greater awareness of how discernment is lived in spiritual direction and spiritual direction formation</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">be more secure in their role as a trainer enabling discerning processes</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;">have clarity about ways in which this discerning stance can be developed in the course they are involved in</li></ul>All sessions will run on Zoom from 9.45am to 4.15pm<div fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: border-box;"> </div>Previous participants share their responses to this programme:&nbsp;&lsquo;A safe space to open your heart to the unexpected.&rsquo;&lsquo;It opens up the process of discerning far better than reading it in a book.&#39;&lsquo;[It] may well change your perception of what discernment is all about and, with practice, it will change the way you live and pray. Discernment is not something that we ‘do’ at certain moments of decision in life. Rather it is the stance we should assume in every aspect of life and can be articulated in the question ‘how am I centred and responsive to God?’
As course leaders and people responsible for the formation of spiritual directors, we need to be aware of our own discernment processes if we are to enable others to grow in their ability to discern well.
