Nowadays not only do we rely on our commercial and sales staff to hit that bottom line but we expect our engineers and project teams to play their part too - not only through their engineering and management skills but by behaving in a commercially minded way in their dealings with their counterparts in customer or supplier organisations. This means understanding, amongst other things, the issues surrounding the commencement of work ahead of contract, having a clear contract baseline, recognising the broader implications of contract change, the need for timeliness and the consequences of failing to meet the contracted timetable. This practical one-day programme has been designed specifically to give engineers, project staff and others just that understanding. The course is designed principally to provide engineers and project staff with an appreciation of contractual obligations, liabilities, rights and remedies so that they understand the implications of their actions. It is also suitable for business development staff who are negotiating contracts on behalf of the business. The main focus of the day is on creating an awareness of when a situation may have commercial implications that would harm an organisation's business interests if not recognised and handled appropriately and how taking a positive but more commercial approach to those situations can lead to a more positive outcome for the business. As well as providing an understanding of the commercial imperatives the day also focuses on specific areas affecting engineers and project staff, such as the recognition and management of change, the risks when working outside the contract and managing delays in contracts. The course identifies the different remedies that may apply according to the reasons for the delay and provides some thoughts on pushing back should such situations arise. The Site Safety Plus SMSTS course was introduced on 1 April 2002 as part of the Site Safety Plus CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme. All Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) certificates issued after 1st January 2001 are valid for a five year period from the date of issue. The two day refresher course will enable current SMSTS certificate holders to renew their qualification, however this course can only be attended by current and valid CITB SMSTS certificate holders. The CITB SMSTS Refresher certificate training course is designed to ensure that personnel maintain and up-date their current health and safety knowledge. The course covers changes to legislation, approved codes of practice and best working practice within the industry. Individuals wishing to renew their SMSTS training certificate must provide a copy of the original five-day course certificate. Details of the course venue and the date of the course should also be provided if known. Only those individuals who have passed the five day course and provided evidence of this will be eligible to take the two day refresher course. The UK CAA Commercial Pilot's Licence (CPL(H)) If you want to fly professionally as a career, you will need a Commercial Pilot’s Licence (CPL (H)). This is the standard professional licence which can only be taken at Approved Flight Training Organisations like Heliflight.  Heliflight offers a modular flight training approach to obtaining a CPL (H) that helps you to train at your own pace and manage your finances. Before you start training for your CPL, you will need to hold a PPL (H), issued in accordance with Annex 1 to the Chicago convention and have logged 155 hours of helicopter flying including 50 hours PIC of which 10 hours must be cross-country. You will also be studying a range of theory in greater depth than for your PPL. This study can be done at home in your own time on a distance learning course. Heliflight will guide on where best to complete this ground school. There is also a compulsory ground school part of the course that lasts three weeks in total. This will also give you the opportunity to make friends with fellow pilots as you work towards passing your theoretical exams. These exams must be passed prior to taking your Skills test, but Heliflight recommends that they are passed prior to commencing your flight training. The theoretical knowledge exams cover the following subjects: - • Air law • Meteorology • Aircraft general knowledge airframe/systems/powerplant • General navigation • Aircraft general knowledge - instrumentation • Radio navigation • Mass and balance • Operational procedures • Performance • Principles of flight • Flight planning and monitoring • Visual flight rules (VFR) communications • Human performance The flight training will comprise of at least 30 hours of dual flight instruction, including 10 hours of instrument instruction and 20 hours of visual flight instruction. Your commercial flying course will hone the flying skills you developed on your PPL and build upon them. You’ll become adept at emergency procedures including practicing landing a helicopter without power. You will also need to complete at least 5 hours of night flight instruction, comprising 3 hours of dual instruction, which will include at least 1 hour of cross-country navigation and 5 solo night circuits, each including a take-off and landing.  You will not need to complete the additional night flight instruction if you already hold a night rating (helicopter). At the end of training, and when all requirements for licence issue have been met, you will need to take a skill test with an examiner.
