Our Introductory Creative Studies – Knitting course is a 30-hour supported self-study programme you can complete in your own time.

The Introductory programme is accredited by City & Guilds as an affiliate centre of Artybird Carnforth.

Debbie will be teaching the this exciting and unique programme which will be available to study via distance learning so you can learn from the comfort of your own home at a time and pace to suit you. There’s no pressure and Debbie will be there to assist and guide you throughout your learning journey.

Whether you are a brand new knitter, aspiring designer or a more experienced knitter who would simply like to consolidate their skills, you will love this programme. And, if you would like to be recognised for your achievements, you can submit your work for formal accreditation for an internationally recognised, professional qualification from City & Guilds.

This course uses presentations and materials collated for the Textiles Action For A Sustainable Future conference in June 2023. It focuses on sustainability and climate change, and how textiles education can make practical differences, using case studies approaches from businesses, NGOs and teachers.

The UK Government legislation to meet net zero by 2050, involves us all to act in order to achieve the 25 Year Environment Plan and Net Zero Strategy. This includes the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals and UNESCO’s ‘Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) for 2030’, which sets out the key role of education in the successful achievement of the goals.

UK GOVERNMENT POLICY PAPER: Sustainability and Climate Change: A strategy for the education and children’s services systems.

Education is crucial in equipping and empowering children and young people with the tools to tackle the climate change challenge. This event aims to give up-to-date information, advice and practical guidance on integrating climate education into D&T and Art & Design Textiles courses. 
This course looks at the Fashion & Textiles industry and the British schools curriculum, with presentations from sustainability experts from high street clothing brands such as PRIMARK & Marks & Spencers, designers, manufacturers and education, talking about and giving examples of how they are tackling the challenges of becoming climate and environmentally friendly. They identify and outline how a step change in climate and sustainability education can be made, so that young people have the skills and knowledge needed for the twenty-first century.
The course also looks at the NATIONAL CLIMATE EDUCATION ACTION PLAN which emerged from the Climate Education Summit in September 2021, organised by Reading University, one of the world's leading centres for the study of climate.






The aims are to:
Understand the current global issues of sustainability and climate change
Focus on the sustainability agenda for textiles education
Look at case studies of high-street brands and how they are tackling these issues
Look at the current national education agenda and how this directly affects what we do
Explore practical ways in which the textile teaching community can integrate sustainability and climate change education in the classroom
Look at how we can provide life changing opportunities for all pupils.



Why is this important?
Currently, young people in the UK face a ‘lottery’ with regards to climate/sustainability education and subjects, such as textiles, which desperately needs perceptions and attitudes changing. The textiles industry is one of the largest polluters, users of valuable resources and producers of waste. Young people, teachers, and experts from across a breadth of subjects are calling for change and textiles teaching can support this.
There is a huge need for essential skills and knowledge, to prepare for the challenges of a changing climate, to be taught across the curriculum. Appropriate training and support for all staff within schools and colleges, including teachers, leaders and governors, is also essential.
Climate and sustainability are such important issues and we hope to update you on what is already happening both nationally and locally and support you in delivering this through your teaching.

The Tempestry Project combines fibre art and climate data to visually represent temperature trends through knitted or crocheted tapestries, known as “Tempestries.” Each piece reflects daily high temperatures for a specific year and location—starting with January at the bottom and ending with December at the top, much like a vertical bar graph. Standardized yarn colors and temperature ranges ensure consistency across all Tempestries, creating a powerful and personal way to engage with climate change data.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
Bondaweb on a roll: This is the primary material you will be using.
Fabric ground: A plain fabric base, this can be cotton or polyester (scrap fabrics for the patchwork design)
Haberdashery: Scrap fabrics and a variety of threads. Gather beads, sequins, ribbons, yarns, or any other embellishments you want to incorporate into your artwork
Iron and board: To fuse the fabric layers together, no steam. Iron should be on its hottest temperature.
Hand sewing needle and thread & hand embroidery needle and thread.
Fabric scissors.
Acrylic paint: very small amount (2 colours) & paintbrush.
Baking parchment (greaseproof paper) to protect your iron
If you are machine embroidering your artwork, you will also need:
Sewing machine with free hand capacity
Thread
Embroidery hoop

Join Nicola Perren of Perren Studios for a new set of classes in the Drawing for Textiles series. The 2nd of the series will see us explore and expand our resources in a fun, creative drive to engage with drawing for textiles as part of the design process. 
You do not need to have completed the 1st in the series to join in. You will select a subject matter of your own choosing and we will move off the flat surface of the page to create our own 3d artefacts. These can be used as elements to explore later on paper but more often emerge as observational drawings in themselves.

 



COURSE OVERVIEW:
We often find ourselves drawn to familiar subject matters and as a result, outcomes can start to become predictable. This course will see us not only making our own resources but also consider the act of making 3d resources as a drawing and observational process in itself. We will explore the abstraction of self-selected subject matters in a way that is mindful of a textile practice in order that we can promote outcomes that are unexpected, engaging and playful.



WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR:
This course is suitable for anyone, from those new to textiles, through to experienced makers who want to explore or refresh ways of thinking. You may be a teacher or lecturer looking to recharge your creative batteries, a student who wants to further your current knowledge, or maybe outside of formal education and fancy trying something outside of your usual remit.
You may have already completed series one, if so, it is great to have you back on board but equally, this course can be completed without having done the previous one.



WHAT TO EXPECT:
The focus of this course will be on the creation of 3d artefacts that will be inspired by our own visual references i.e., drawings, photographs, objects. With a playful and experimental approach, we will consider form, scale, texture and line in the development of artefacts made from both soft and hard materials.
Making textiles, is so often about working ‘in space’, whether it is crochet, loom weaving, machine embroidery, tufting or even print making. When we draw on paper in more traditional ways, we can often cut straight to final designs and avoid the expressive, fun and trials that can emerge through drawing. By exploring drawing as a 3d mode, can engage with the more unusual and allow us to explore material properties, movement and the special qualities so often linked to textiles themselves.

 



WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
This course does make use of a wide range of materials and tools, as with all my teaching, I offer alternatives to what I am doing in the class. You can do this course often with items you may already have around the house / in the garage but equally, you can by items specifically for the course.

PROGRAMME:
Once you have signed up to the full course, you will have access to a full materials list and a video to help you prepare before you join a session, this will include an approach to starting the project i.e., gathering visual references, creating some initial observational drawings [you may already have a project in the past you want to revisit or, want to start with something new]. 
In Series One, we worked with a particular colour story, for this series of classes, it is up to you if you want to use a colour story I provide, create your own or, like me keep colour simple and work with a monotone approach.

PRE-COURSE MATERIALS:
A] Pre-session planning. This video should be watched before you start the course to help you prepare and gather the things you will need. 

SERIES PROGRAMME:
Session 1] Drawing to Build.
Starting out drawing as form, we will then move on to lift the line off the page and into 3d. Twisting, binding, wrapping, folding and adapting will be key.
Session 2] Organic and Pliable.
Working with malleable materials, we will explore textural qualities and consider the potential of multiples.
Session 3] Geometric Structures.
Being mindful of edges, negative space and construction, we will explore our source subject with relatively hard materials.
Session 4] Soft Form Stitch.
Working with textiles as a material, we will explore the potential of stuffed forms stitch as a drawn observation.
Session 5] Drawing our Artefacts.
Observation and dramatic approaches are used to view, understand and explore our new library of visual resources.

Knitting the Rainbow

Decaying Structures in Knitting is an experimental knitting workshop, exploring ways to create holes and open surfaces using simple hand knitting techniques.&nbsp; Exploiting the properties of the fibre, the session will also look at creating eroded surfaces using both heat and chemicals methods.

Knitted Sculpture

This kit and tutorials cover the equivalent of a 2 day workshop and will get you from beginner knitting skills (casting on, knit, pearl, casting off) to a confident intermediate level. You will explore a variety of more complex and decorative stitches as well as looking at more complex patterns for projects. You can then move onto altering patterns, converting patterns and designing and writing your own! You can even email to ask questions and get some more help.Please allow 7-10 days for your kit.
