Samworth Church Academy

Mansfield

Whenever we welcome new visitors into The Samworth Church Academy, they very often comment on the sense of positivity, energy and general friendliness you feel as soon as you enter the building. Our Academy is a special place which is only confirmed when you meet with our young people and the staff that support them. Lisa McVeigh The Academy was established in 2008 by joint sponsors Sir David Samworth and the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham. Their vision was to create an inclusive place where people and students come first and where students can be educated holistically as well as academically and leave prepared for a long and happy adult life – 70 plus great years. Our emphasis and exploration of our Christian values, as well as our membership of the international Round Square organisation, encourages students to ‘Be The Best They Can Be’ and to explore their own (perhaps hidden) talents and potential in a wide range of ways. Our beautiful and lovingly cared for campus houses a range of sometimes unexpected facilities including a climbing wall, high ropes course, Dance Studio and Drama Pod, a Combined Cadet Force, a fully functioning hairdressing salon and well populated animal care unit. We are also committed to delivering the best academic education we can for our young people and to training and supporting our teachers to be the best and most innovative teachers they can be. Our teaching facilities are modern and well-equipped and we are always looking for ways to improve them further. We are very proud of what has been achieved by our fantastic young people in the past and excited at the limitless potential of current and future students. If you would like to find out more about what they get up to, this website is a great place to start but also please get in touch with any further questions or for a look around the Academy at work at any time of the year. We would be very happy to demonstrate how inspiring our students are and to give you a flavour of the wonderful things they achieve as they strive to ‘Be The Best They Can Be’.

Logistics Learning Alliance

Chellaston

Logistics Learning Alliance are a leading supplier of Logistics/Supply Chain Courses and Qualifications. Subjects covered include Management & Leadership, Supply Chain Management and Logistics Operations including Warehousing, Transportation, Inventory Control, Production Planning and Soft Skills. As one of the UK’s leading training companies in Logistics we offer exceptional levels of training both for individuals and for organisations. Our award winning development programmes are designed to both challenge and develop your Supply Chain and Logistics skills. All of our programmes are offered by online distance learning with face to face courses, or a blended option being available on request. We are also able to create bespoke programmes to meet specific organisational needs. These experiential learning programmes build on a simulated workplace, with strong tutor support to ensure that students have an enjoyable learning experience. Our tutors are all logistics and supply chain professionals, from a range of backgrounds spanning commercial, humanitarian and military sectors. All are driven by one vision – to help students through to successful completion of their programmes. We want you to ask the questions when you need help and guidance. Customer service and support for our students is at the heart of our business. Our Programmes use the innovative ‘competence model’ approach, which emphasizes application of skills, as opposed to the examination of knowledge. At the start of their course, the student is placed into a realistic scenario in which they have to advise on and manage logistics functions. Throughout the programmes, candidates are supported by tutors who are experienced in commercial or humanitarian logistics. The team at LLA also assess candidates’ assignments and determine when they are ready to proceed to the next unit. The European Supply Chain Award for Excellence in Training and Professional Development is awarded for projects that have resulted in improvements to the supply chain via strategic use of training and development programmes. In 2011, the award was won by the partnership of the Fritz Institute, CILT and LLA for the Certification in Humanitarian Logistics (CHL) programme. LLA is also an approved Learning Provider for the Enhanced Learning Credits scheme, designed to provide assistance to qualifying British Military service personnel in gaining a nationally recognised qualification.

Trent Valley Woodturners are a club of 60+ members who meet on a regular basis to discuss and practice the art of wood turning. The club is based in Kegworth, Leicestershire and is situated next to the Village Hall. The workshop is situated in a brand new purpose built facility which was opened in early May 2015. On the second Wednesday of every month the members are entertained with a demonstration from either a professional wood turner or a club member. Demonstrations take place during the evening between 6.30 to 9 pm and are free for all members to attend. Non members are charged £5 for admission. Spaces are limited so be sure to contact the Secretary before arriving. Club activities include a hands on experience several times each month, where members have access to a variety of lathes and workshop equipment. At these meeting the members have the opportunity to use the club facilities or to just discuss ideas or problems with other people. On the third Wednesday of each month, members have the opportunity to socialise, watch DVD’s and discuss problems over tea and coffee. This is a ‘no turning session between 1.30 – 4.30pm. During the Autumn and Winter months, on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, training is given to students new to woodturning. The cost for each 8 week session, 2 hours per night is £64. Due to popular demand training has now been extended to include Friday Mornings, a 8 week course, 3 hours per session costs £96. Anyone interested in joining any of our training classes should contact the Secretary as soon as possible as places are limited. Activities are arranged throughout the year and include all day presentations by professional Woodturners and visits to local wood fairs. At these fairs the members demonstrate their woodturning skills and exhibit some of the items that have been made in the club. Some of these items are sold to the general public and some of the proceeds donated to charity. The club facilities include a variety of lathes and workshop equipment, a library of books/DVDs and a stock of woodturning accessories which include glues, polishes and miscellaneous items. The club has state of the art audio and visual equipment which is used during demonstrations.

In the highly stressful position of school leadership, it is often difficult to get a truly dispassionate view about how well you are doing or what other schools are doing to address particular challenges. Too often, external evaluation is very clear on identifying strengths and weaknesses but offers little in the way of advising on what can be done to address issues arising. With our experience of working with more than two hundred senior leadership teams across England, extensive knowledge of data management and analysis and up to date knowledge of inspection procedures; we can help you gain an objective, accurate understanding of the effectiveness of key areas of your school and will write this up in a way that directly contributes to your school self-evaluation, thus saving you time to spend where it really impacts; with your children and teachers. My Background After a successful 15 year career teaching in a range of different primary schools in different authorities, culminating in Headship, I joined a major public services company in 2008 advising on data analysis and management and school improvement through accurate self-evaluation. As part of this remit, I provided CPD and advice to primary schools across the country. In 2010, I undertook inspection training and became a fully qualified additional Ofsted Inspector. I successfully retained my badge in the reduction of inspectors in 2016 and continued inspecting until 2018, when one-day inspections significantly reduced the need for additional inspectors. During my time on inspection, I worked on behalf of SERCO and then Ofsted directly from 2016. In May 2011, I became a fully independent schools advisor and since then, as well as inspection work, I have worked with over 250 schools Nationwide. The location of these schools has included Sunderland and Teesside in the North East, Manchester and Thameside in the North West, various parts of London and Wiltshire in the South East and West, as well as many points in between! In these schools, I have worked in partnership with them on SEF writing, school advisory work, self-evaluation and school performance information analysis as well as providing both on-site and course training regarding data analysis and curriculum development. As I am not employed by Ofsted and have no ties to local authorities, then you can be sure that the view point I give is objective and based entirely around the evidence available. I work as an advisor to both maintained LA primary schools and Multi-Academy Trust groups.

I am often asked what my style of yoga is. I find this really difficult to answer. I trained with the British Wheel of Yoga (BWY), but I attend a lot of yoga days and weekends with various teachers, many from the Satyananda tradition. In May 2014 I started the Satyananda Integration Teachers Course. Satyananda yoga is traditional yoga, looking after the whole person; giving us tools to help with the busy lives we all lead. It includes all the asanas, the breath work, meditation, mantra and chanting, and it is where the practice of Yoga Nidra originated. Yoga Nidra is a deep relaxation – and we all need a bit of that! I love being out in the garden or walking. Being in touch with all of my sense. I have a deep love of nature and often weave that into some lesson plans! The scope of yoga is vast and I rule nothing out – but I only share what I have tried and think others will find beneficial or interesting. My suggestion is to come along for a couple of sessions, and if you like my way of teaching fantastic. If not I can try and help you find someone more suitbale for you. We all have different needs at different times. I have been teaching weekly classes since April 2010; weekend retreats since December 2012; and in 2014 I started running regular monthly workshops – allowing a little extra time to focus on different elements of yoga. When you practise yoga you are working with the mind, the body and the breath. In Hatha Yoga (‘Ha’ means sun and ‘tha’ means moon), we are working to balance the solar and lunar – the yin and yang – energies in the body, mind and spirit. It really does not matter what other name you give your practice, as long as you are practicing with awareness, being here and now – and really importantly, accepting and appreciating what you have now. I am often told that ‘I cannot do yoga as I am so inflexible’. My response is always ‘if you are breathing you can do yoga – in fact you already are doing yoga’! By practising the asanas (postures) you become more flexible, but yoga is so much more than just the asanas, it helps you breathe properly, it helps you relax, we learn to meditate to help find that peace within…I could make a huge list! Please give yoga a try. It really can make a difference to how you feel and how you cope with the stresses and strains of our Western society.
