Life hasn't been easy, i've been to the very lows but its all helped me grow as a person to where i am now. It has been incredibly tough, i knew it wasn't going to be easy but no one told me how hard it would be. I didn't do great at school, i only got 2 C's and nothing higher. I never let that hold me back as i was far to determined. When i decided i wanted to create my own Tumble Academy (as thats how it started) i put £500 of my saving into an account to create 'GymForce'. The website, insurance, leaflets and t-shirts. Why Gym Force? I feel like having a sport I adored help me so much in my adult life in many ways. I’m a very confident, motivated, ambitious person and I have gymnastics to thank for that. I would love for more children to have that in life. I feel like GymForce has a lot to give. As a small club we know everyone that walks through the door. We get complimented a lot on this. It’s more than just a club, we have/make time for each and every athlete, even their parents! I will continue to make personal little touches to my club that other ‘big’ clubs don’t currently offer. The Start of the journey... I started gymnastics when I was three, and I absolutely loved it. Especially floor! I just loved to tumble, that was my thing. As I got older I did more and more hours working my way up to club level. I felt that having gymnastics in my life helped me stay focused and on the right track when some of my friendship group didn’t. I wasn’t one to do well at school, reading and writing was not for me. I just wanted to be active all the time. So I had decided from a very young age that I would love to go into sports and coaching. I started coaching at 14 as a leader, it was great as I got to save money towards my first car.

Extremely good motorcycle and facilities, based in a motorcycle shop called speed demons we have a classroom seating, toilet, And you also get £10% off some items that you may buy in the shop; you can even buy a motorcycle or have one serviced all under one roof Why did I start my own Motorcycle Trainings School? It was when I was attending a my daughters graduation the advice the lecture gave to the young people now going out into the work place was this “If you can do what you enjoy doing as if when you go on vacation and make this your vocation you will never work another day in your life”This thought really hit home to me. Living and working in North London for 30 years I wondered what did really want to do. Where would I like to be? What did I enjoy doing Etc.? This was the easy part, I enjoyed my Motorcycle riding, and my charity work with Advanced Motorcyclist Group where I had become an observer with them. I enjoyed teaching others become safer better riders and seeing them enjoy their new riding skills. So career change to do what I enjoyed was required. A Fresh Start, a new way of life. The hard part was getting the training and qualifications and passed the DVSA test. In order to run a DVSA (ATB). My own motorcycle training school when completed the dsa exams I first moved and run a Motorcycle training school in west Cumbria.2003 then with the law changes with the 2 part test it ment a relocation and we moved to manchester area and been ruinning the training school in mancheter Atherton area since 2008 But in 2008 there was changes in the motorcycle test was conducted with the now know 2 part test with new test centres (mptc) required in order to do the new off road manoeuvres, but it meant over a 50 mile trip to the my nearest test centre. Because of this I felt I had to relocate and move my established business closer to one of the new DSA test centres, this we did at the start off 2008. Now we are based in Atherton Manchester only 1/2 mile from the DVSA test center i belive that we are the closest training school to any dvsa motorcycle mod 1 test area ,

Growing up I was incredibly blessed by the magic my parents created for my sisters and I at Christmas. It started a few weeks before the big day with the tree. We had a classic late 80’s white tree. Each year, we’d gather together as we unboxed the decorations, taking it in turns to place our favourite baubles on the branches. The star, the most magical ornament of all, would be placed at the top by my Dad. The Christmas classics vinyl would be playing on our record player as we drank hot chocolate and prepared for the forthcoming festive season. These remain some of my fondest and most vivid memories. My parents kept that seasonal spirit alive for us throughout the pursuant weeks, ending in a crescendo on Christmas day. Gifts and games galore, sing alongs whilst my Dad played the guitar. As the night drew to a close my Mum would snuggle us up under a blanket before we went to bed. I wouldn’t trade these precious memories for anything. I’m aware how very fortunate I am. Nowadays Christmas remains a joyful time for us and over the years, we’ve gathered new loved ones and added even more traditions to our family repertoire. Charades is a Findlay family classic. And you can bet your bottom dollar Die Hard will feature at least once. In 2019 I experienced my worst Christmas. Dealing with a difficult diagnosis and having only received my cancer treatment plan hours before, I spent the day in a haze of champagne, anti-anxiety medication and shock. The year or two leading up to that Christmas, I’d been experimenting with long periods alcohol free. Once a proud owner of my party girl status, I’d been surprised by how freeing it felt to remove the booze and lean into other facets of myself. Parts of me that I’ve now come to realise alcohol had been concealing, or more perhaps more accurately, stealing.

Progress Jiu Jitsu

Westbrook Park

We started Progress in the Summer of 2012. The brand started in Manchester, England. We take great pride in being from Manchester and the city's culture and history influences a lot of our designs. James Tighe (a then blue belt) started the brand with his close friends and family, all of whom a decade later are still part of the company. We all shared one thing in common, an unbelievable passion for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. We fell in love with the sport and our dream was to one day quit our jobs and work on the brand full time, being involved with the Jiu Jitsu community, to help it grow as much as we could. This dream became our goal. The brand name perfectly represented how we felt about the sport, and us as people. It's all about the Progress you make. We put less emphasis on winning at all costs, and more on improvement. We genuinely want our customers and fans to be the best they can possibly be, on and off the mats, and the essence of our brand is to try our best to make that happen, through our products, our content, our athletes, our projects and everything else we do. We will help you achieve your goals. ''Without struggle, there can be no Progress'' Fast forward to January 2021, we finally achieved our goal and launched the brand full time. We quit our jobs and committed to a warehouse lease. We have not looked back since, and have our amazing customers to thank for giving us the best job in the world. As a brand our promise is to repay your faith in us by providing the best customer experience you could dream of, and supplying the community with legendary Jiu Jitsu gear. We pride ourselves on adding more value to the Jiu Jitsu community than we take out. Our mission is to grow our sport by sharing our passion for the Jiu Jitsu lifestyle, making the World a better place through the movement of Jiu Jitsu.

Makers Quarter

Salford

Makers Quarter was formed in response to a number of issues facing the independent makers of Manchester. High commercial rents, impractical spaces, and isolation are major problems experienced by many. We felt passionately about finding a solution for this and believe that a shared workshop space is the solution. Manchester was at the heart of the Industrial Revolution and sadly over the years industry has been swapped for office space and city center flats. There needs to be a balance to help small independent businesses thrive and we think the Makers Quarter is a great start! Makers quarter will not only be providing space but a creative community and exciting lessons to the public. Having access to a shared workshop, studio spaces and craft tables in the heart of the city will encourage all types of makers to come together. Having tested the water in a small workshop in collaboration with 3space the positive response has encouraged us to open a larger space. We have searched endlessly to find a suitable location for our members and Makers Quarter in now finally a reality! Our 7500sq ft workshop in central Manchester has great transport connections. Cornbrook tram stop is just a 6 minute walk away and a foot/cycle path along the canal cuts through Castlefield locks and takes you straight into town in less than 15 minutes. Makers Quarter is shared between our members and divided up into larger studio spaces, pods, craft tables and a separate wood workshop for all to access. Creating this community allows us to provide a hassle free, creative space at affordable rates. By offering flexible space on both a permanent and pop up basis we aim to support makers of all levels. Anyone can join, whether they are a professional maker, need a workbench for a weekend hobby, or would like to learn new skills. We will be offering classes in all sorts of interesting crafts such as ceramics, woodwork, Upholstery, furniture making, leather work and many more....check on our members page for upcoming classes or to book a slot in the workshop.

Raise Up Business Club (Silke Thistlewood)

raise up business club (silke thistlewood)

Cheshire

I (Silke Thistlewood, that’s me on the left with my 2 girls) set up a local networking group for mums in early 2017 after returning from (self employed) maternity leave and feeling decidedly isolated. I had lost my business mojo, felt pretty lonely, and couldn’t make any of the existing networking meetings (no babies allowed, too early, too late etc) so I decided to start my own. I called it Tonbridge Mums in Business and its facebook group grew to 500 members within just a few weeks (it surpassed 1,000 quite some time ago now). We’ve been having regular meetings ever since and the facebook community has grown from strength to strength, with the Thursday promotional thread having become a thing of legend. You have to see it to believe the amount of local talent! And now RuBC_LogoFinal_White_Rose.png In early 2019 I felt is was time to raise the bar and level up - in my own businesses and for the group. I had for some time been wanting to add more value for members - more structure, support and resources (mailing lists for meeting reminders, access to talks members can’t attend, accountability, goal setting etc). With 2 other businesses to run and young kids to look after this was logistically and financially not possible on a voluntary basis (paying for the yearly website subscription alone made my eyes water…..) so I made the decision to introduce a membership structure and a charge for the meetings. I very much hope that the pricing structure I have decided on reflects the value current members have gained from the group and the meetings, and the fact that most of us are working with small margins and reduced working hours crammed around child care and other responsibilities. To set the group apart from other networking meetings in the area, which are confusingly similar in name, the group has been re-branded and has a new name that I feel embodies what the group and community are - supportive, encouraging, non judgemental, inclusive, friendly and quite frankly, magical. I am blown away at each and every meeting by the friendships and kindness that members show each other. What you can expect Community, support, encouragement, friendship, collaborations, inspiration, education - online and in real life across both communities. Weekly check-ins, accountability prompts in the membership community to keep you on track, inspired and safe in the knowledge that this group of women will always have your back. We also co-work in real life and on zoom, go on walks together, discuss books and have coaching sessions with the one and only Action Woman. A wider community of businesses in the free facebook group with the chance to promote your business each Thursday, as well as getting to know others and forming friendships and a basis for collaborations. Someone will always have an answer to any questions you might have - business or otherwise. Regular networking meetings with expert speakers, mingling and cake and/or wine - and not an elevator pitch in sight (so no need to feel nervous). Easy going networking, without the need to “work the room” or hand out business cards at super sonic speed. Our meetings are informal but effective. Low key but inspirational, educational and supportive. Some kind words from business women in the community “There is always a warm excited, inclusive buzz within the group, with many friendships that have been formed over time and I know that some of us have started either using each other’s products or services – or formed collaborations with each other. It’s like a girls night out every month in Tonbridge! SAM HOGWOOD, ESCAPE FROM THE CITY This group has been very welcoming from my first step into my first meeting. I have found everyone in the group to be friendly and supportive of each other and encouraging of the development of one another's businesses. The facebook group and meetings have allowed for shared knowledge and experience in developing each others businesses. I have made great business links and come into work through the group, both paid and through joint collaborations. I have also made some lovely friends through the group which has been a really lovely added bonus CLAIRE READER, CAPTURE ME HAPPY PHOTOGRAPHY I started my Virtual Assistant business in the middle of last year and I am a regular on the weekly Thursday updates. These updates are great as not only do people learn how your business is growing but you can support and find out about other local businesses on your doorstep. I have not made it to one of the networking events that Silke kindly arranges yet, but I will, and when I do, I am sure it will be even more beneficial to my start up business than the group has been so far. EMMA HAGGART, KENT VIRTUAL ASSISTANT Since setting up my hypnotherapy business in 2018, I've found the support of this talented and diverse group to be wonderful. It's great knowing I am not alone in being new to setting up a business, and coming up against many of the same issues as others in the group. This is so reassuring, and I have really benefited from the shared knowledge, passion and experience of everyone in the group. Meet ups are friendly and dynamic, and the topics very fitting. I've made some good contacts and will always recommend fellow business owners where I can. Thanks to Silke this group has really grown and developed and I look forward to further collaboration this year.
