A modular "hybrid" venepuncture course - eLearning (online) theory and one full day classroom based course.
On completion awards a Nationally Recognised and Accredited Certificate in Phlebotomy.
 
PART 1 - THEORY
Complete this part of your course online (eLearning Course) in the comfort of your own home or workplace.
Please allow approx. 5-7 hours to complete this part of your course. You do not need to complete Part 1 in a single "sitting", and can log on/off to complete as and when convenient to you.
 
You should complete Part 1 before attending Part 2 below.
 
PART 2 - CLASSROOM
Attend the second day of our two day course in the classroom at the training location that you have selected.
Your classroom tutor will recap on the theory element (above) after which you will begin your practical sessions learning and developing the skills required up to the point of Live Blood Draws.

M06: Blood Collection Systems:
A detailed look at three blood collection systems and
associated equipment.
 
M07: Anatomy and Physiology:
An overview of the integumentary system and cardio-
vascular system. Understanding veins, arteries, capillaries and nerves, and their locations.
 
M08: Blood Composition:
A detailed look at the composition of blood. Routine tests on whole blood and routine tests on serum and plasma, including profiles.
 
M09: Using the Equipment:
A detailed look at one blood collection system (Vacutainer), including standard and butterfly needles and all associated equipment. A comparison of Vacutainer with Monovette and respective merits. Sterilisation processes. Bottle types and handling. Coagulants and anticolagulants.

How do I attend?

EITHER -
CLASSROOM OPTION - Attend one of our scheduled classroom locations, completing your Introduction to Phlebotomy Course over 2 days. You will also complete your Advanced Training at the end of the first day and your Competency Training at the end of the second day.

Our Introduction to Phlebotomy and Advanced Phlebotomy Training Kits are supplied at no charge when booking our virtual classroom training option.
If you would like to add one or both of these kits to your classroom training option then these are available to add at time of booking. Our comprehensive training kits each mirror the same equipment and supplies used in the classroom and both include detailed video tutorials, allowing you to continue to practice and "hone" your skills after you have completed your practical training.

VIRTUAL CLASSROOM OPTION- Complete your theory training online at home or work, then join us for a one day Zoom session to complete your Introduction to Phlebotomy virtual classroom training, followed by your Advanced Training in the evening of the same day. You have the option to add a classroom-based competency session, awarding a CPD Accredited Geopace Certificate of Competency, at time of booking.

Our Virtual Classroom option includes two very comprehensive training kits - one for your introductory course and one for your advanced course. Kits are included at no charge (normally £79.95 each) and are yours to keep and to continue to practice with after you have finished your courses. The Emergency Lighting BS 5266 one day course is based upon BS5266:1 (including latest amendments), BS5266:7 and BS5266:8. Emergency lighting is essential for the safety of building occupants. It is vital that the emergency lighting automatically operates in the event of normal lighting failure. The illumination levels and period of time the illumination can be sustained should be sufficient to allow the building occupants to evacuate safely and locate both fire alarm, fire fighting and first aid equipment. The Emergency Lighting BS 5266 course provides the necessary information to designate emergency escape routes and design and commission an emergency lighting scheme to BS 5266. The morning of the Emergency Lighting BS 5266 course is spent reading through and interpreting the relevant parts of BS 5266. The afternoon takes the form of a practical workshop where a system is designed and the participant is then introduced to the practical issues of commissioning, inspection and testing, certification and reporting.

The centrifuge - overview. Safe operation and use. Managing a centrifuge breakage or spillage.

Equipment preparation for blood samples that are collected at
0 degrees, 37 degrees C and other non-standard conditions.

Sample collection from new-born to pre-adult. A detailed overview of legal principles of law including child consent and child protection for phlebotomists. Neonatal and child blood collection equipment.
A comprehensive look at heel and finger-prick procedures including
microtainers, lancets and capillary tube collection. Detailed heel prick procedure. Paediatric finger prick collection. The life-threatening hazard of over-collecting. Communication techniques in differing age bands.

2 - Syringe and Needle (open system): Correct use and applications.
3 - Monovette (open and closed systems):
Using the Monovette system in aspiration mode - correct use and applications.
Using the Monovette system in evacuated mode - correct use and applications.
4 - IR Vein Detector:
Demonstration of the IR vein detector for assisting in detection of difficult veins.
5 - Veins in back of hand:
Detecting suitable veins in the back of the hand.
6 - POC testing:
Point of Care Testing - use of glucose meter to demonstrate a typical POC test procedure. Correct use and overview of other POC test devices.
7 - Using lancets (finger collection)
We look at the correct use of lancets for POC testing and whole blood micro-collection.
8 - Using lancets (heel collection)
We look at the correct use of lancets for neonatal blood spot tests (Guthrie Test).
9 - Capillary collection
Using glass capillary tubes for micro-collection. Correct use and handling.
10 - Microtube collection
Correct use of BD Microtainers (and similar micro-collection bottles) - collection and handling.

There are two exams:
1. Multiple choice theory exam. November and March.

To be eligible to sit your first exam, you have to complete your electronic Record of Experience (eROE). The eROE has to be submitted to your tutor by 31st Jan for March exam, and 31st August for November exam.
