This year at Drive Learn Achieve we celebrate our fourteenth birthday. Fourteen years of teaching Cardiff’s learner drivers, fourteen years of test passes, fourteen years of reviews and recommendations, and fourteen years of close shaves! In July 2007 DLA launched with the ambition of getting to July 2008. We had a huge driving school fleet that comprised of one well worn, cheap Toyota Yaris, 100 freshly printed business cards and a young driving instructor that was still learning the trade but keen as mustard (still don’t know what that means). We’ve had our learners drive us up one-way streets (the wrong way), around roundabouts (the wrong way) and have taught thousands how to negotiate Cardiff’s most notorious junctions the right way (Gabalfa interchange and Culverhouse Cross included). We quickly realised that we were going to be popular due to being recommended and our online reviews. We started the process of interviewing driving instructors that were interested in joining our team. Most didn’t make it. We demand the highest standards of professionalism in the industry and this meant that sometimes the ‘fit’ wasn’t right. We’ve now assembled a group of Cardiff driving instructors that understand our approach and deliver excellent customer service. In 2010 we opened our Facebook and Twitter accounts and we continue to use these platforms to interact with the public and shamelessly plug our driving lessons in Cardiff and driving test passes. It took a while but in 2018 we finally got on Instagram too. In March 2011 Apple released the iPad2 and the geeky version of us was in the queue to pick ours up on its UK release date. We knew it would be a game changer for driving instructors and it was. The interaction and understanding between pupil and driving instructor increased exponentially and we now couldn’t live without them – both our pupils and iPads of course! Cardiff’s practical driving test centre moved from Fairwater to Llanishen in 2013 and with it came the introduction of the bay park manoeuvre. The test has also seen the introduction of the Hazard perception part of the theory test, basic car maintenance questions, independent driving and last year saw the Sat Nav test introduced. Keeping up with these changes is intensive but we’re of the opinion that if it makes the roads safer, review and embrace it. In 2016 we started to offer driving instructor/ADI training to people who feel that they can contribute to society and its roads by not freaking out when headed towards a lamppost. This is an acquired skill and takes nerves of steel – bizarrely we really enjoy it and we’re aiming to become the best at it! In 2019 we began helping disabled drivers to fulfil their dreams of being on the road. Sometimes the driver already has a licence but following a recent diagnosis/illness, they need to learn a new method of controlling a vehicle. This is a part of the business that is developing as fast as driver innovation is, and it’s equally rewarding and exciting for us to be a part of.

These programmes can be delivered to small and large groups of people over a period ranging from a ½ day to a series of one day events. Our programmes are delivered by a team of experienced staff who are dedicated to breaking down barriers which may have precluded many people from reaching their full potential. Each member of the team will have extensive experience in working with young people and engaging them in a number of activities that are designed to build confidence levels. This is the first step towards building aspirations which can lead to successful and fulfilling employment. By working closely with key business partners in the community in the design and deliver stage of each programme, we can ensure that the content of each programme reflects current business trends as well as the challenges facing the business world today. This is vital in preparing young people for the world of work. By developing a range of employability skills which are tailored to meet the individual’s needs, we aim to ensure the pathway to successful employment is accessible by all.

To get started all you need to do is join one of our beginner course that run all year round every year, we are a family school so you will be made welcome nonmatter your background or reason for training. Feel free to just make a note and turn up ready to start on the night in your location of choice or contact the school so we know to expect you as well before hand by phone, txt or email. Once you have started and then complete a beginners course you can then decide if the skill is right for you and if you would like to become a member. This course covers around 16 to 32 hours of training depending how many classes you attend in each location and the aim is to get you to a basic level of understanding so you can identify and develop what's needed as quickly as possible right from the start. KIRAN (also known as KIRAN Cymru) is committed to improving mental wellbeing of Black Asian Ethnic Minority people living in Wales. We particularly focus on people over 50 and young people. However, all of our activities are ‘open to all’, and we welcome everyone to participate. We currently have several projects to promote mental wellbeing. Please see below to learn about the projects and visit their respective websites. KIRAN Legal - Free Legal Help This is a pilot project by KIRAN Cymru. We help financially disadvantaged BAME members in Wales by offering free legal support (Benefits, Housing and employment) and interpretation/translation services in Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, Sylheti, Punjabi and Gujrati. Please visit, kiranlegal.co.uk for more information. Friends in Need - Befriending Service This is a pilot project by KIRAN Cymru. Since March 2020, we have been helping BAME people in Cardiff with their day-to-day needs, i.e., grocery shopping. We also ring elderly community members regularly to keep in touch and overcome loneliness through our befriending service. Our ‘Friends in Need’ service helps BAME people in Wales to connect with other people and fight social isolation. Our Communities Our Strength - Wellbeing for BAME People This is a project by KIRAN Cymru. This project started in March 2021. We aim to combat the adverse effects of COVID 19 pandemic by creating regular and structured opportunities for BAME community members to connect with each other through virtual meet-ups, games, and cultural activities. We offer various opportunities for all BAME people in Wales to connect with other people in virtual social meet-ups, e.g., book clubs, bridge clubs, learning musical instruments, e.g., Piano and Tabla. There is also a community musical group for you to join. As a part of this project, we have started an English Online Magazine called Story Cloud. All community members are encouraged to take part in creative writing. KIRAN Cymru offers free guidance and training on ‘Creative Writing’. It is a beautiful skill and can improve the confidence and self-esteem of the writer. Please get in touch with us if you want to take part in creative writing. Story Cloud will publish the selected short stories, poetry and feature written by community members. Apart from the above, we offer other befriending services for local communities. Pinkspiration aims to inspire young people and transform communities. Our business was founded in July 2011 and offers skills based training to gain on site experience increasing knowledge to progress into industry, regenerating some of the 380,000 empty spaces and empty shops across the United Kingdom. Our business offers industry placements, mentoring, advice and guidance. Up skilling the next generation of young people to help close the increasing skills gap. Our team offers a number of opportunities through industry placements on our TV programme Transforming Spaces‘ Design Factor’ featured on BBC. Since launch 8,500 young people directly up skilled of which 70% have progressed onto training, employment or Starting Up. Our construction sites are 50/50 gender split and our teams have re-generated 16 empty spaces, empty homes, heritage buildings and worked on Wales largest road scheme a £400 million programme. REAL ISSUES * Nearly 1 million young people unemployed * Over 380,000 empty spaces & empty shops in the UK * 
Over 220 million tons of waste generated for Landfill * Only 3% of women in manual trades, 5% in engineering and only 2% of female owned businesses in Wales Transforming Spaces: Design Factor Our construction projects transforms empty and unused spaces through working with the community on the planning, design and build. Working with build experts and volunteers from the community it acts like DIY SOS/60 minute makeover. The aim is to up skill young people and members of the community to gain on site experience. If you have an empty space or empty building our team will work with you on the planning, design and rebuild of the space to turn it into a thriving community provision. Training on the site includes: planning, construction, managing budgets, Marketing, enterprise, business and managing the whole project. Our team and the experts will work on site for around one week to re-build the space and encourage volunteers to become involved and progress into training, employment or Starting Up. Helping people to gain vital industry experience to progress their career. The whole process is filmed and broadcast. Our build projects have included Wales First Garden City Café, The Hope Centre-Newport, Blaenau Gwent Community Hub-Waundeg, Empty Shops Project-Cardiff & Newport, State of the Art Cinema Room using Recycled Pallets- Cwmbran Centre for Young People, Penygraig Empty Shop, Newport Heritage Building.
