Puy's aim is that participants enjoy a sense of mindful immersion while focusing on the materials and the process. Participants find that the four 10cm x 10cm tiles are the right size and quantity for this half-day workshop.</p>

<p class="font_8"><strong>&ldquo;What is &lsquo;buon&rsquo; fresco?&rdquo;</strong></p>
<p class="font_8">Meaning &lsquo;true&rsquo; fresco, &lsquo;buon&rsquo; fresco is the method of applying pigments dispersed in water onto wet plaster, the &lsquo;intonaco&rsquo;, to create durable paintings on walls and ceilings. This differs from fresco &lsquo;a secco&rsquo;, &lsquo;dry&rsquo; fresco, which is the method of applying pigments mixed with a binder to dry plaster.&nbsp;</p>
<p class="font_8">Traditionally, the buon fresco artist prepares the wall or ceiling with three or more layers of plaster, made with varying ratios of slaked lime putty and aggregate such as fine sand. The paint is applied to the intonaco, the final, smoothest and thinnest layer of plaster that contains less sand than the penultimate, coarser layer, the &lsquo;arriccio&rsquo;. Puy has worked out the best formula of intonaco for your tiles, and you will be using a combination of marble dust and fine sand.&nbsp;</p>
<p class="font_8"><span class="wixGuard">​</span>When the artist paints on the wet buon fresco surface, the pigment particles, carried in water, are locked into the intonaco as it dries. During the chemical process of the slaked lime reacting with the air, the pigments become embedded in a stone-like surface and therefore the artist&rsquo;s marks become a physical part of the painting-object.&nbsp;</p>
<p class="font_8"><span class="wixGuard">​</span>The durability of buon fresco is evidenced in the earliest known examples of the method, made by the Minoans of Bronze Age Crete around 2000 BCE. Imagery depicting Minoan culture, belief systems and their connection with nature has been very-well preserved within the intonaco surface that once covered palace walls and ceilings.&nbsp;</p>
<p class="font_8"><span class="wixGuard">​</span>Using the same method and similar materials that artists have used for centuries, Puy will help you to create unique, interesting fresco artworks without having to re-plaster your walls or ceiling.</p>

In Puy’s hands-on workshop you’re invited to experience specialist materials and methods, similar to those used by Michelangelo over 500 years ago for his incredible Sistine Chapel ceiling in Rome. Learn an ancient painting method and create your own beautiful fresco artworks on tiles for your home and garden.

Bespoke painting and sculpture workshops can be arranged or Francesca can travel locally to guide you in your own studios or locations.</p><p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">There are some fabulous painting and sketching locations for plein-air painting around the old Cortijo which is situated 750 metres high in the olive groves. With mountain views and a variety of plants and trees, which include oranges, lemons, pomegranates, figs and grapes. The eco-swimming pool is also a great place to sketch and paint with water lilies, iris, marginal plants and a small waterfall.</p><p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">Locations locally include the Watermill walk at Algarinejo, the lake at Iznajar, any of the local towns and of course further afield in Granada, Cordoba and Malaga.</p><p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">Francesca Wyllie is a very experienced tutor and has led many workshops with groups and one-to-one classes. No previous experience is necessary and tuition can cater for all levels. You can cancel your tuition booking 2 weeks before your course and can contact Francesca to discuss an alternative date. Should this not be possible or a suitable date not be available you will receive a full refund. Francesca Wyllie is a very experienced tutor and has led many workshops with groups and one-to-one classes. No previous experience is necessary and tuition can cater for all levels. Just come with a positive outlook!
Unlocking creative potential is her speciality and some workshops will be a special blend of loosening up artistic techniques, mindfulness and yoga to bring a holistic approach to the workshops. This will break down any barriers, fears, or self-doubt you may have, to release your creative potential and bring back a playful love for creating art.

Art Tuition Fees:
Painting tuition starts at €30 per hour per person and includes some materials and refreshments.
Courses are a minimum of 1 1/2 hours and are normally held on weekends.
There will be a discount applied for group bookings fees of over 2 people of 20% and of 50% for over 4 people.
Sketching – you will receive a free sketchbook, pencils and refreshments – cost €30 per hour.
Watercolours, Oils and Acrylics painting including Plein Air painting in the near vicinity will be €30 per hour for watercolours and €35 per hour for Oils and Acrylics and will include one board or watercolour sheet, plus use of materials and brushes.
You are also welcome to bring your own materials too.
Digital Painting – You may need to pre-install the Artrage app on an IPad or tablet prior to the workshop. Francesca can guide you with this. The Artrage app is normally available for under €5 for IPad. Workshops are charged at €30 per hour
Life Drawing for groups with a minimum of 6 people. Price on application.
All workshops will usually include helpful pdf guides for tips on materials and techniques.
Other venues:
Do you require a workshop to be held in a specific location or in your own home? This can all be arranged but may involve extra fees to cover travel time and fuel costs. This will all be agreed with you in advance.
Francesca loves to paint on location and has held many painting and Ipad painting workshops. She is also available for artists’ talks.
Accessibility – The studio does have a wheelchair-accessible ramp though some rooms do have steps up to them. Please discuss your needs prior to your visit using the Contact form and we will try to accommodate you.
Should you wish Francesca to travel to you this can be a good solution. We will look for the most suitable venue for you and do not wish to place any barriers to you unleashing your creative potential.
Cancellation Policy
Sometimes stuff happens and life gets in the way. You can cancel your tuition booking 2 weeks before your course and can contact Francesca to discuss an alternative date. Should this not be possible or a suitable date not be available you will receive a full refund. Bookings cancelled with under a week’s notice will incur a cancellation fee of 50% of the full booking.
In the event of the course being cancelled* due to bad weather or should the Artist find herself ill in bed, (this rarely happens as she is quite hardy), you will be refunded in full or an agreed alternative date will be given.
*During the Covid outbreak, payments should only be made two weeks prior to the course date to avoid potential problems with lockdowns or new social distancing rules. Please can you discuss any arrangements with the Artist for the wearing of face masks or any other special requirements, medical / allergy matters.

<p>Stages of work include:</p>

<li><strong>Transfering the image onto tracing paper.</strong>&nbsp;We will use tracing paper not only to transfer the design but also to learn and explore the shape and the line.</li>
<li><strong>Transferring finished drawings onto a panel</strong>&nbsp;covered with layers of gesso.</li>
<li><strong>Redrawing with paint.</strong>&nbsp;At this stage, students will start learning how to make paints using egg yolk and dry pigments.</li>
<li><strong>Once all&nbsp;</strong>surfaces are covered with enough layers of ground we can start building shapes using lights. In icon painting, we don&rsquo;t build shapes with shadows.</li>
<li><strong>Gilding</strong>&nbsp;&ndash; we will be working for real gold leaf. You will be guided step by step in this process to learn the traditional method of gilding. We will be working with oil gilding.</li>
<li><strong>Applying</strong>&nbsp;final lights and highlights. Finishing.</li>
<li><strong>It is recommended</strong>&nbsp;to wait at least a few weeks before varnishing the finished icon painted in egg tempera. Guidance and demonstration will be provided.</li>

<p>born in 1978 in Warsaw, is an icon painter and contemporary artist. She was trained in Poland in the College dedicated to iconography. Studying ancient techniques of egg tempera and gold gilding. For many years she has been mainly working in a very traditional style learning the language of the icon. When she came to Edinburgh she started exploring other &lsquo;&rsquo;languages&rsquo;&rsquo; searching for more personal and contemporary ways of depicting similar reality. Her development as an artist is a process of uncovering a truth about who we are as human beings and what we need to become whole. Icon painting as a spiritual practice grows in silence and stillness.</p>
<p>Graduated from The Maria Grzegorzewska Academy of Special Education, MA and College of Iconography (Policealne Studium Ikonograficzne) in Bielsk Podlaski in 2008.<br />She has been working for major icon-painting workshops in Poland. Organized many private workshops and residential courses.</p>

Applying final lights and highlights. Finishing.
