Evolution Jujutsu is a training program that is designed for practical personal protection in ‘real life’ situations. Our aim is to develop confidence, co-ordination and the skills necessary to avoid or manage conflict. With our training you can learn how to confidently defend yourself in as little time as three months. Members train with people in their own age group so they can learn appropriate techniques and have fun. Evolution Jujutsu runs 5-7 years, 8-11 years, 12-17 years and adults classes throughout the week. Please check our timetable for more information on class times. We believe that you should have fun while you are learning, and that goes double for our younger students. In 1968 Denise Keenan from St. Augustine’s Church here in Park Ward, began running a pre-school play group. She and a small team of volunteers extended this to community lunches, English classes and social activities in response to local need. When Calderdale became a dispersal area for people seeking asylum in the early 2000’s we started to support people who had arrived locally to settle into life in the UK. In 2009 St Augustine’s Centre became an independent charity, continually evolving and welcoming all, regardless of faith, ethnicity or background. Now Calderdale’s specialist charity working with people seeking asylum and refugees as well as local people, we have 16 staff, 170 volunteers and a community of 650 individuals and families from 57 countries. We offer specialist advice on immigration and asylum support, and one to one support with welfare, housing, health and access to wider services. We provide hot meals, English language classes, training, cultural, social and wellbeing activities, trips and volunteering opportunities. We offer spaces for reflection and a befriending and integration service. As a core member of the Valley of Sanctuary, we want to share stories and build awareness about the experience for those fleeing war and persecution, advocating and campaigning locally and nationally. 52 years on, Denise still volunteers at St Augustines.

Basis Yorkshire was set up (as Genesis Leeds) in 1989 by a few volunteers, supporting sexworkers in Leeds. In 1997, a young person’s service was established to accommodate the specific needs of girls and young women who were being sexually exploited. In 2018, Basis Boys was established to accommodate boys and young men that are being exploited, sexually or otherwise. The charity also provides high quality training and awareness raising sessions locally and nationally on social justice issues and practice development. POSITION STATEMENT – WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO Basis supports indoor and street sex workers who identify as women, and young people who are sexually exploited. Our purpose is to empower people to make safer and healthier choices by offering information, support and options. Our work is driven by a sound evidence base, as well as working closely with women and young people to ensure our services are designed and delivered with them, putting their voices and experience at the centre of our work. We challenge stigma and inequality of access to services for everyone we work with. We are proud to be one of a small number of specialist organisations that explicitly recognise and advocate for women’s right to work more safely when selling sex, while also supporting young people who are sexually exploited to be safer and free from harm. We understand that for some women and young people, their ‘choices’ are severely constrained by a range of factors including physical and mental health, substance use, family circumstances and abusive relationships, as we support them in managing the risks and vulnerabilities they face. We recognise people’s dignity and agency in their decision-making.

Baby Week is a registered charity and aims to bring sectors and services together to promote the best start in life. The initiative was inspired by Brazil’s ‘Semana do Bebe’ (UNICEF 2010), following a visit to the country by Churchill Fellow Lucy Potter. Leeds hosted the first English speaking Baby Week in 2016 and since has had interest from several other towns and cities wanting to host their own celebrations. Since Baby Week became a registered charity, Bradford, Hull, Wakefield, Cheshire and Merseyside have organised their very own take on Baby Week Leeds. In 2019, we were nominated and came in second place as charity of the year by The British Journal of Midwifery Practice Awards (BJM). Over the past six years, hundreds of citywide events have been held with thousands of attendees including parents, expectant parents, practitioners and professionals , and of course babies! Each city hosting the week has the opportunity to celebrate and bring together the work of maternity and early years services, helping to raise awareness of the critical developmental growth stages and a real focus on the 1001 days in order to give every baby the best start in life. Baby Week is organised with Child Friendly Leeds with partnerships involving NHS Leeds, Leeds Teaching Hospitals, Leeds Dads, Public Health, Mumbler, and many more partners across all sectors. To mark the 5 years in 2020, Baby Week Leeds focussed on five of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as a focus over the next few years: Good Health and Wellbeing, Reduced Inequality, Sustainable cities and communities, Climate action and No Poverty.
