Lighthouse Medical is pleased to sponsor Lighthouse Educational Foundation. The charity’s aim is to provide funding for all types of Primary Care education and ultimately improve healthcare for the Island’s population. They work proactively to fund and organise education/courses that fill the gaps identified by structured training needs analysis. The charity was founded in 2010 and has already helped 1,857 Islanders to further their education, with general and specific training courses. From 2011-2018, the Foundation invested £184,794 in our local healthcare workers. This included supporting local GPs, GPwSIs, Practice Nurses, reception and admin staff. Courses funded so far have ranged from half-day sessions to Masters courses. The charity has supported staff in clinical and non-clinical roles and can help when other funding is limited or not available. The aim has always been to organise courses here on the Isle of Wight, reducing travel time, increasing the ability to attend, and enabling the charity to keep costs down. Much of the funding is donated by Lighthouse Medical, a healthcare organisation that is committed to re-investing in the Island’s Primary Care services. The belief is that by helping to meet education/training needs, Isle of Wight Primary healthcare staff will remain keen, enthusiastic, and able to provide the first-class healthcare services that patients across the Island deserve. This will also help to maintain a sustainable improvement in the Isle of Wight’s health services.

Matt has been involved in training, since early 2000s where he set up and provided training programs for individuals in industry. Since starting a teaching career Matt has trained, coached and provided CPD for both ITT and experienced teachers. Matt is a STEM Learning Facilitator and frequently works for Southampton University and St George’s SLP providing bespoke Chemistry and Teaching & Learning CPD for schools. More recently Matt has been working internationally, consulting with governments, industries and universities to develop national curriculums and schemes in Science, Technolog, Engineering and Maths (STEAM). Matt still enjoys tutoring students at KS3 and GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics helping students achieve a better understanding of the subjects and an increased confidence to apply themselves. One of the biggest comments from students is “thank you for making me believe I can do Science”. Matt has had a love of the outdoors all of his life and his spare time is spent enjoying bushcraft, hiking, canoeing and cycling. Matt has worked closely with BushcraftUK and Forest Knights and his passion is now to combine his love of teaching with his passion for the outdoors so that new generations can be taught relevant content whilst developing important personal skills including communication, leaderships, problem solving, mental health and resilience.

We provide small groups with the individualised support, assistance and / or expertise they need but do not have amongst their volunteers and cannot afford to 'buy in.' An example of this is acting as a banker by holding monies in trust and paying suppliers direct on the group's behalf when asked to do so. This simplifies the administrative burden greatly for groups and gives them more time to focus on what they set out to do. We also provide Governance advice so groups can get less bogged down in red tape. Digital services are also an area we help with, providing advice on how groups can promote themselves, and help them do so if they wish. Some of the groups we work with feature on this site. The British Society of Gerontology was established in 1971. It provides a multidisciplinary forum for researchers and other individuals interested in the situations of older people, and in how knowledge about ageing and later life can be enhanced and improved. Until 1979, the Society was known as the British Society of Social and Behavioural Gerontology. BSG is a registered charitable company (Charity number: 264385) and is the professional organisation representing gerontologists in Britain. The Society was elected as a member of the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics (IAGG) in 1987, and is affiliated to many other organisations in the UK and abroad. As a learned society, our aim is to advance gerontological research, education, theory and practice. We are active in raising the profile of ageing and in drawing attention to its social, economic and policy implications. To this end, we are working to a five year (2015-2020) strategy entitled ‘Raising the Profile of Ageing Research in a Changing World‘. This aims to position the BSG as a world leader in the development of ageing research. To accomplish this aim, BSG brings together researchers, practitioners, educators, policy-makers, students and older people. Our members have varied backgrounds and come from: the social and behavioural sciences; humanities; medicine; health; housing; social care; nursing; policy arenas and voluntary agencies. BSG has Memorandums of Understanding with both AgeUK and the ILC-UK. For more information on either of these, please contact the Secretariat. The society is also in the process of updating a formal agreement with CPU in collaboration with CPA in relation to the publication of Ageing and Society. The Society holds an annual conference (either in July or September) organised and hosted by members from different Centres and Institutions around the country. The annual conference attracts international delegates as well as domestic participants and is a prime opportunity to meet and network with like-minded colleagues. The Society publishes a regular journal – Generations Review; was instrumental in the establishment of Ageing and Society – one of the premier peer-reviewed journals in the field; and is responsible for a range of other publications including a Directory of Members’ interests and ‘Making the Case for the Social Sciences: No 2, Ageing’. The work of the BSG is overseen by an elected Executive Committee assisted by a part-time Secretariat. In addition to the annual conference, the Society supports a variety of other events and activities. In particular, we have an active group for postgraduate students and early career researchers – ERA; make bursaries available to support conference attendance; and award prizes and funds to recognise the contributions of members.

About Alice Leahy Trust TRUST was founded in 1975, and this year we are 35 years working people who are homeless in Dublin. TRUST is a non-political, non-denominational voluntary body set up in 1975 as a private charitable trust (Charity No.CHY7014) to provide medical and related services for people who are homeless. We work in premises provided at a nominal rent by the Iveagh Trust. Between 30 and 40 men and women call each morning, the majority of whom are sleeping out (age 18 to 85). We see new people daily and often have people calling who were housed – settled- and become homeless again. Washing facilities are available and each month we give out in excess of 500 outfits of clothing to people who are homeless as part of our total health service. Members of the public, Rotary and church groups donate the clothes and shoes. Developing a Sense of Self-Worth We encourage and help people who come to us to avail of statutory services and to obtain their entitlements; to place a value on themselves; to develop a sense of self esteem and avoid dependence on private charity. “When we first entered TRUST on the Monday at the beginning of the week Alice asked us if we could ever see ourselves homeless and straight away we answered “No”. But now after all we’ve experienced and seen I now realise there is only a very, very fine line between having a home and being homeless. Homelessness is not just being houseless -it’s about not feeling wanted or belonging somewhere. Society has an awful opinion of homeless people as drunks, down and outs -whereas they are only human beings like the rest of us who just couldn’t keep up in the rat race. We met some very well spoken people -teachers who couldn’t get jobs, doctors who couldn’t “make it”. They become so institutionalised that they will not move out of a hostel. Before, I would have been anxious or afraid to approach a homeless person on the street but now I know that they would be happy to have someone to talk to. I also never realised all the organisations and people who devote and have spent most of their life working with the homeless” Extract from diary of student nurse on placement. Helping to Create a Society where Everyone is Important We see a major part of our work is in the field of advocacy or promoting more awareness of the outsiders amongst us, and the creation of this web site and our Transition Year Project and Essay Competition grew directly out of that commitment. We are a relatively small agency but through our work we have gained valuable insights and using our experience we try in different ways to bring that into the wider community and seek to effect change. For example, we have been intensely involved in prison and psychiatric work since the beginning of Trust. In 1998, Trust Director Alice Leahy was invited to join the National Crime Forum. Trust is on the Consultative Board of the Homeless Initiative and is involved in on-going training of specialist groups. We make submissions in response to requests from government agencies and are involved in relevant research on the issues relating to homelessness. Trust feels that some agencies involved with people who are homeless may not respect everybody’s right to the confidential use and storage of information. Some people who are homeless feel pressurised to take part in research into homelessness in case they may lose their hostel bed or their entitlements. Trust only participates in research when we believe the research design is sound, ethical and likely to provide useful information. “I was most impressed by your service. The bright coloured walls and wooden floors were warm and welcoming, and mirrored the bright cheerful staff who welcomed me… I was particularly impressed by the pictures on the wall, which captured the sensitive nature of the people who use your service and speaks of a place where everyone is accepted just as they are. Those pictures tell me that every life is a work of art.
