Hi, I'm Beth. I’m a Speech and Language Therapist from Essex, UK. I'm a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist, from the UK, with extensive experience working with children with speech, language and communication needs in a range of settings including schools, preschools and clinics. I'm mum to two primary school-aged children, one of whom has special needs. I also provide a regular service to a number of schools in my local geographical area. I have a master’s degree in Health and Human Sciences (MSc), qualifying as a Speech & Language Therapist in 2009. My undergraduate degree (BA Hons) is in Linguistics and Spanish. I’m registered with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, the Health and Care Professionals Council and the Association of Speech and Language Therapists in Independent Practice (ASLTIP). I have been the chair of my local ASLTIP group for a number of years, organising regular meetings and suporting a large group of 18 members covering a range of clinical specialisms. I’ve worked with lots of practitioners and staff in schools and preschools throughout my career and I've provided a lot of information, advice, training and support for a variety of Speech and Language topics. As well as training education staff, I also deliver seminars as a guest lecturer to Speech and Language Therapy Students at the University of Essex. These cover a range of topics, including service provision, speech sounds, stammering, vocabulary and word finding, assessment and intervention. I’ve delivered a huge number of training sessions, created by me, on a range of SLCN topics to staff working in schools and preschools. As a result of my training on speech and language issues, dozens of Teachers, Teaching Assistants and Preschool Practitioners have felt empowered to help their students with their speech, language and communication needs. The team at Blade Education highly values lived experience as a central part of any successful project. We believe that the answers to many issues begin with valuing what members of any community can tell us about what they need for a successful outcome. Wherever possible, we hold lessons, sessions, and events outside. All ages and all kinds of people get involved in Blade Education projects. People have volunteered for us from the age of 8 to 103. From HMS Leigh, a community led heritage and arts project that connected people of all ages with the history of Southend Pier, also known as HMS Leigh, during WW2. Supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Arts Council and Southend Borough Council, this project was created as part of the VE 75 celebrations in 2020 and survived to be one of the first post pandemic lockdown in person events in September 2021. Our latest project, Southend Safer Care Leavers has developed a free online information service for young people supporting the knowledge already given and ensuring they are ready to take charge of their own health care. Thanks to all our supporters and volunteers from a wide range of organisations and funders, Blade Education for nearly two decades has been able to offer wonderful learning experiences to thousands of children, families, and the general public. We also hold two competitions each year: an open tournament in Spring around April and in Winter in November. We also have a squad of students who regularly compete both here in the UK and overseas at national and international levels. Social events are held throughout the year where students and families from different locations can meet and get to know one another. Our club has an ‘open door’ policy, so if you are affiliated with another style, club or association, you are welcome to come and train with us and there will be no pressure to join. We hold classes for children (aged 5 – 12yrs), teens & adults, and mixed age group classes where the whole family can train together as well as specialist senior grade classes and private one-to-one tuition. Karate is a proven system of self-protection. It is NOT an aerobic class. It is NOT intended to better a person’s confidence or self-esteem. The Rochester Grammar School is a high-performing secondary which is part of the TSA Trust where diversity is celebrated as we create a safe and inspiring place for children to learn; where their rights are respected and they are able to develop their talents and abilities to their full potential. We started our RRSA journey in September 2021 and have achieved the Bronze Right Respecting School Award (RRSA) and are now working towards achieving our Silver Award. The RRSA (Rights Respecting Schools Award) is awarded by Unicef. Unicef is the world’s leading organisation working for children and young people and their rights. In 1989, governments across the world agreed that all children have the same rights by adopting the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). These rights are based on what a child needs to survive, grow, participate and fulfil their potential. The Award recognises achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child at the heart of a school’s planning, policies and practice. All children are taught about their rights at the Rochester Grammar School. Rights are the focus each week during form time with key discussion points and reflections activities. We also have a steering group where children come together to discuss their Rights. We celebrate our diversity as a school community as we endeavour to develop young people who are fully cognisant of their rights whilst respecting the rights of all members of our school community. As we work towards the SILVER accreditation we have: Weekly form assemblies where students use RRSA’s resources to explore the articles from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. These are linked to mental health, online safety, identity or equality and other topics. Planned for each form to create their own Form Charter that encourages children to behave in a 'rights respecting' manner. Established a 'Steering Group' of adults and children who help to drive the programme across the school. This captures the voice of the child and adds to the important jobs our Student Leaders already do. Undertaken staff CPD to secure a commitment from the whole staff to the principles of the RRSA and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Conducted a planning review: We are in the process of reviewing the KS3 curriculum to embed issues and themes of the UN Convention across our subject areas so that the children visit and revisit important concepts throughout their learning journey.
