Lee Furniture offer a beginners course in cabinetmaking. The tuition is one on one. This course is for the beginner interested in making furniture. The course is hands on and will be based around using tools and machinery to plane wood, use of hand tools to include the correct use of: Marking out tools Planes Chisels Scrapers Power tools During the day we will talk about wood selection, Planing, joints etc.. You will also have a chance to use a Tablesaw, bandsaw, router table etc.. You will also have the chance to cut some dovetail joints by hand!! Throughout there is plenty of time for questions. PLEASE NOTE: You don't make a box on this course, if you wish to leave with a finished product at the end of the day, please book our box making course in or other courses available.. Lee Furniture offer a beginners course in Box Making. The tuition is one on one. This course is for the beginner interested in making furniture.  Throughout the day we will make a box (see images) in solid Oak/Ash (Timber dependant on stock) There is an option to upgrade the box to Walnut timber during the course!! The course is hands on and will be based around using tools and machinery to plane and join for your box, use of hand tools to include the correct use of: Marking out tools Planes Chisels Scrapers Power tools There will be demonstrations throughout the day including chisel sharpening, planing and cutting wood. Unlike courses of this type elsewhere, this is a making course, not just assembling pre-cut planed components, you will plane from scratch sawmill-provided timber.  At the end of the day you will have achieved the making of a solid oak box, and learned some of the techniques used in cabinet making. The Box is finished with modern style hinges and a oil/wax finish.. What's included in the price? Wood is included in the course for practising your new skills.  Tea and coffee included for the day. Alien spoons? Well, only because it is a memorable name and some of the knife grasps feel a bit alien to start with. You will soon get to grips with them and the focus of this workshop is learning to use safe and efficient carving techniques with hand tools - the axe, straight knives and hook knives... maybe also a drawknife on a shave horse. By following good technique you will avoid injuries and with regular stretching this will help you to look after your body as well as the tools. You should leave with the knowledge and confidence to carve safely at home. The tools are relatively cheap and easy to use in a small space. You will have access to a range of tools, but primarily use the Mora wood carving knives (106/120/164s) and be shown traditional designs for optimising strength and utility. Using these traditional tools you will make a spoon from local and sustainable fresh cut green wood - starting with a log and leaving with a spoon. From the initial splitting of the log with a froe or axe, trimming this down with an axe, and on to carving finer details and decorations with knives. Additional skills in building a shave horse and other green wood working can also be taught. This course is run from close to central Edinburgh and is accessible by public transport.  Depending on the weather it can be inside or outdoors in the wildlife garden. Learn about woodworking hand tools & woodworking machinery

This is a theoretical and practical introductory group tuition during which you will be taught common, essential leather crafting and basic sewing techniques.You will be taught how to correctly use hand tools, how to hand sew leather and understand the most common finishing techniques used in bag and accessory making.You will learn about different types of leather and understand how to select the correct type of material(s) for your project. You will have your very own solid jewellers workbench to work on to complete your projects and your own tool kit meaning you won’t have to wait for tools. Your bench is also equipped with its own pendant motor. In the workshop you will also find soldering equipment on each bench, a wide range of professional stone setting tools for various stone setting styles, a wide range of hand tools, texturing tools, a rolling mill, a hydraulic press, polishing equipment, dapping tools and punches, all of which will allow you the chance to create your designs within a professional setting. EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: You must be enrolled on our term time class or summer term or have experience. CLASS SIZE: 7 WHAT IS INCLUDED? WHAT TO BRING: For safety reasons, during each class, you are required to wear appropriate footwear, we request that no open toed shoes are worn within Workshop 925. We have handouts for many demonstrations, but there are always many tips and tricks given verbally by the tutor, which some might like to keep note of. REFERENCE CODE 600/6511/4 COURSE LEVEL NVQ Level 2 THIS COURSE IS AVAILABLE IN Course Overview This qualification is aimed at those who are involved in plastering activities in the workplace. It is not expected that candidates working in this industry all do the same activities so the qualification has been developed to allow opportunities for those carrying out work in any one of the following broad categories: solid basic plastering, solid full plastering, basic fibrous plastering and full fibrous plastering. Those taking the qualification must also prove knowledge and competence in working at heights, calculating quantities and wastage and the use of powered and hand tools and equipment. All work completed must be done in accordance with building regulations and industry recognised safe working practices, including the disposal of waste. The qualification is structured to ensure that there is a high degree of flexibility within the units available and will allow employees from companies of all sizes and specialisms equal opportunity to complete. To provide this opportunity in addition to the core skills above, candidates will also be able to select optional units recognising skills including, working with direct bond dry linings, laying sand and cement screeds, installing mechanically fixed plasterboard and carrying out repair work. The standards cover the most important aspects of the job. This qualification is at Level 2, although some units may be at different levels and should be taken by those who are fully trained to deal with routine assignments. What is required from candidates? GQA qualifications are made up of a number of units that have a credit value or credits. This qualification consists of 4 mandatory units and 2 pathways, Solid and Fibrous. The qualification mandatory units have a total credit value of 31 credits-in addition the Solid plastering pathway requires achievement of 54 credits from the pathway mandatory units and a minimum of 14 credits required from the pathway optional group, giving a total of 99 credits. The fibrous plastering pathway requires achievement of all of the qualification mandatory units (31 credits) 45 credits from the pathway mandatory units and a minimum of 16 credits required from the pathway optional group a total of 92 credits for this pathway.
