Data has become the most important resource for every organisation – but the insights gained from data analysis will only ever be truly valuable if they can be clearly expressed to other people.  This course is for anybody who works with data, and needs to communicate the meaning that's in the numbers to colleagues, customers, bosses or external stakeholders.  It will give you or your team the confidence and skills to translate raw data into compelling visual stories for your key audiences. The principles and skills covered apply to the simplest PowerPoint chart, to more complex interactive visualisations.  We’ll work with you before the course to ensure that we understand your organisation and what you’re hoping to achieve.  Sample learning content Session 1: What makes a great data-driven story The key elements of a successful infographic or presentation. Industry best practice, and discussion of good (and bad) examples. A simple framework for identifying the Audience, Story and Action. Session 2: Data in context How to balance function and aesthetic appeal. Identifying the right graph, chart, infographic or other visual. Framing the data and providing contextual information. Session 3: Designing for the human brain Using colours to add emphasis and meaning. Design and layout principles, and creating hierarchies of information. The principle of ‘self-sufficiency’, and removing clutter. Session 4: Navigation and narrative Tailoring visualisations for different types of communications. Structuring presentations and longer reports. Thinking in layers to create interactive dashboards. Delivery We deliver our courses over Zoom, to maximise flexibility. The training can be delivered in a single day, or across multiple sessions. All of our courses are live and interactive – every session includes a mix of formal tuition and hands-on exercises. To ensure this is possible, the number of attendees is capped at 16 people.  Tutor Alan Rutter is the founder of Fire Plus Algebra. He is a specialist in communicating complex subjects through data visualisation, writing and design. He teaches for General Assembly and runs in-house training for public sector clients including the Home Office, the Department of Transport, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, the Health Foundation, and numerous local government and emergency services teams. He previously worked with Guardian Masterclasses on curating and delivering new course strands, including developing and teaching their B2B data visualisation courses. He oversaw the iPad edition launches of Wired, GQ, Vanity Fair and Vogue in the UK, and has worked with Condé Nast International as product owner on a bespoke digital asset management system for their 11 global markets.

LOOKING FOR: MG / YA / ADULT FICTION & NON-FICTION Steven Evans is an Agent and the Company Manager at Eve White. He grew up in Newcastle upon Tyne and studied French & Italian at Queens’ College, Cambridge. After completing an MPhil in Comparative Film & Literature, Steven lived in Paris, where he worked as a university language assistant and a freelancer for various scouting agencies. He joined Eve White Literary Agency in 2021. Steven reads fiction and non-fiction of all kinds. The non-fiction books he loves most often shed light on under-represented perspectives, communities and histories, while in fiction he seeks novels which might explore new ideas, challenge the reader or play with style, form, character and/or plot. Above all, he likes writing which has a sense of purpose, and likes to be taken by surprise. Items on Steven's wish list might include: Fiction (Adult) : Crime/thriller – might be regional or with an unusual hook/high-concept. Might have a speculative element (think Stuart Turton). A spy thriller appeals. Cosy crime with an original setting/protagonist is also welcome. Literary fiction – worlds, characters, perspectives and histories which haven’t been written about before. Might be formally or stylistically innovative (but with a sense of purpose that links back to the story/characters). Historical fiction – themes and ideas relevant to our current moment are on the list. Might be revisionist. Romance – contemporary: either very heartfelt, cosy, perhaps with older characters. Or, spicy, funny, tapping into current trends. Horror – on the literary end, perhaps with a folk tale element. Fiction (YA) : Thrillers Romance Fiction (MG) : Fun, historical adventure exploring contemporary issues. Might be tied into the national curriculum, though without being didactic. Quirky detective/mystery series. Funny and warm-hearted family-/relationship-based drama with a strong voice. Non-fiction : Voice-driven narrative non-fiction ; memoir ; big ideas. Most of all, Steven just loves to be taken into a world and surprised by what he reads! Steven would like you to submit a short covering letter, 1 page synopsis and the first 5,000 words of your novel in a single Word document.  (In addition to the paid sessions, Steven is kindly offering one free session for low income/under-represented writers. About this Training Course Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) offers opportunities to improve safety and efficiency in drilling, and it is increasingly recognised by operators and regulators. MPD aims to cost effectively resolve chronic drilling problems that contribute to non-productive time. This 3 full-day course provides participants with an understanding of the MPD techniques and equipment. The course starts with the design requirements for an MPD operation. It covers all MPD methods, including constant bottom hole pressure and mud cap drilling operations. It also includes all of the rig types - both onshore and offshore - and MPD. MPD equipment is presented in detail and the design aspects of the well are also examined. Training Objectives This course aims to provide participants with a good understanding of the various aspects of managed pressure drilling. It also enables participants to gain knowledge of planning MPD operations, type of equipment and the equipment requirements for both onshore and offshore and MPD operations. At the end of the course, participants will be able to: Understand the variations in MPD Design MPD operations for various techniques Understand the engineering requirements of MPD Define MPD equipment requirements Understand operational and well control aspects of MPD Target Audience This course is designed for engineers, managers and service providers who are about to use MPD techniques and are trying to better understand the associated complexities and challenges surrounding MPD. Trainer Your expert course leader was born and raised in Nijmegen, Netherlands. He holds an MSc in Drilling Engineering from The Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen and has over 39 years of oilfield experience. He started in the industry back in 1977 as a Mud logger before becoming a wellsite drilling engineer in 1980 working mainly in the Middle East and West Africa. In 1988, he joined Shell in in the Southern North Sea. In 1995, he joined Smedvig in Norway and worked on a number of deepwater wells as well as on underbalanced drilling operations. In 1999, he started Leading Edge Advantage in Aberdeen and worked in coiled tubing, underbalanced and managed pressure drilling. In 2004, he joined Weatherford as Regional Engineering Manager in Singapore and developed the first ultra deepwater MPD systems. In 2010, he joined SPT Group specializing in well control and hydraulics modelling. SPT Group was later acquired by Schlumberger in 2012. At Schlumberger, he was Drilling Adviser, with a focus on well control, relief well planning and MPD. During that time, he was also an instructor for NExT teaching numerous well engineering courses. In 2015, he joined Wild Well as Engineering Manager in Asia and in February 2017, he became an independent consultant concentrating on provision of drilling engineering training. He has written and presented numerous papers and authored several chapters in the SPE Advanced Technology books. He is an active committee member and speaker on numerous SPE Workshops around the world.
