Welcome to Matthew Arnold School. Welcome to our school website. I am very pleased to introduce myself as Headteacher here at Matthew Arnold School. I have been part of the school community since 2013 as Deputy Head and 2021 as Headteacher as well as a parent of children at the school. During those years, two things have always stood out about the school: Firstly, the students are wonderful ambassadors for the school and their community. Keen to learn and develop their approach to learning, they are never shy to ask questions or to challenge the status quo. Secondly, the staff demonstrate their commitment every day to ensuring our students can thrive in the school, both academically and socially. Our calm and purposeful environment prepares students for the exciting life choices we support them to make at the end of their time with us. Our vision of ‘Success for Everyone’ is central to everything we do at school; from designing the curriculum, to the exciting extra curricular activities and enrichment visits on offer, to the highest standards of teaching and learning. It's very important to us that Matthew Arnold School sits at the heart of our community. This website gives you a flavour of the school and our ethos, but we know this can never replace visiting the school in person. One-Eighty was established in 2011, to support and engage young people to live motivated and successful lives through psychological and evidence-based approaches. Since then, we have supported over 3,500 young people (aged 4-18), families and professionals across multiple locations, through our intensive interventions, group work, projects, and training courses, to achieve our charitable aims. The charity emerged from the Youth Offending Service in Oxfordshire as part of the research and production of a resource manual looking at the various reasons why a young person might disengage from education. This research was based around the critical thinking theories – exposing young people to a collaborative exploration of their life and their motivation. It looks at critical moments of their life and helps them evaluate the evidence by which they acted. This, in effect, allows a young person to create a more positive framework of how they might adjust their behaviours in the future. The process by which critical thinking theories operate are the foundation of other therapies like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Systemic Therapy. Research showed that the resource manual, although effective for 76% of young people presenting disengaging behaviours, was not effective for all young people. What this generic model lacked was something designed around a young person’s specific needs.

Mission We work to promote environmental awareness, community cohesion and wellbeing by offering learning and practical opportunities for people to interact with the land, farming and animals. We have turned a derelict site into a vibrant city farm, bringing farming and food production to the heart of urban communities in Oxford. We value the diversity of our local neighbourhoods and recognise the contribution that all members of the community can offer. We strive to work creatively to ensure equality of opportunity for all. We aim to work in ways that empower people to work together to make positive sustainable change in their communities. Our Story A committed team of trustees, volunteers and staff have been working to bring city farming to Oxford since 2008. We are a diverse group of local people with broad skills and experience in areas such as health, youth work, planning, community development, teaching, training, fundraising, horticulture, ecology and veterinary medicine. In 2017 we secured a 40 year lease for the site and, thanks to support from a wide variety of funders and our wonderful community we now have essential infrastructure including mains water, electricity, toilets, hand washing facilities, an office and since the spring of 2021 our fantistic Community Kitchen. We started running regular community farming days in 2017 to enable our community to get involved with the work of the farm, in particular developing infrastructure and supporting growing. We have also developed partnerships with schools and other organisations to increase participation in our work and to introduce more people to the farm.

Speaking and Presentation Skills

Whereas the one day course concentrates on Speaking Skills in delivering a talk and allows time for participants to prepare and deliver a very short talk, the two day course offers the opportunity for participants to deliver a longer (15 minute) talk and includes consideration of other situations where speaking skills are important such as talking in meetings, talking at interviews etc.
