Sands exists to reduce the number of babies dying and to support anyone affected by the death of a baby, before, during or shortly after birth, whenever this happened and for as long as they need support. Babies are dying every day. Currently in the UK, 13 families a day suffer the heartbreak of losing their baby before, during or shortly after birth. That’s around 4,500 babies a year. And an estimated 1 in 4 pregnancies ends in miscarriage. These numbers are shocking and show the scale of the problem. Currently, far too many babies die without scientists, doctors, midwives, or their own parents understanding why. That’s why we believe research is vital in improving our understanding of how to save babies’ lives and using that evidence to drive changes in maternity policy and practice. For more than 40 years, Sands has been here for anyone affected by pregnancy and baby loss to offer understanding and comfort through its Freephone helpline, mobile app, online community and resources, and locally through a UK-wide network of around 100 regional support groups. Sands works in partnership with health care professionals, trusts and health boards and offers a range of training programmes and bereavement care resources to ensure that every bereaved parent and family receives the best possible care wherever they are in the UK. Sands supports and promotes research to better understand the causes of baby deaths, improve maternity safety and save babies’ lives. The charity also raises awareness of baby loss and works with governments, key influencers and other stakeholders to make reducing the number of babies dying a priority nationally and locally.

Isaac Newton Academy Secondary is a non-denominational, non-selective school, welcoming girls and boys from all backgrounds from the local community. The school opened with just 180 Year 7 students in September 2012. The secondary school has grown year on year and we now have 1200 11–18 year olds (including 250 students in the Sixth Form). In September 2014, Isaac Newton Academy opened a three-form entry primary school in purpose-built accommodation right next to the secondary academy. There are 90 children in each year group and, like the secondary school, it has grown a year group at a time. From September 2020, we now have children in Reception through to Year 6.

We are a group of artists for people and value our independent status. Our international team of writers, translators, editors and artists, are led by Snowflake’s creative Director, founder and book designer, Su Yen Hu. At Snowflake Books we make beautiful picture-story books for children, based on well-loved Eastern legends. The characters in these delightful stories have a mixture of good and bad in their lives, but their good qualities always shine through in the end. Children will find both sympathy and inspiration from well-loved characters like little Mouse, Silly Billy the Wise Goat, Golden Pig, Big Red Rooster, and many more here. Snowflake Books cooperates in inter-cultural events for children in leading museums, local schools and libraries through our charitable branch, Dragon Discoveries CIC. We are currently working on new titles about the English countryside, and a new series for children of Lolo the Wise Dog.

The Limehouse Project was founded in 1984 as a housing association by three social pioneers: Suzy Powlesland, former Head Teacher of Sir William Borough School, Dennis Twomey, former councillor for Tower Hamlets, and Myra Garrett, a social worker who continues to work on behalf of minority communities today. Although initially launched to house local homeless families, our workers and founders soon recognised a dire need within local minority communities for access to basic advice services. Following a disbanding of the original Limehouse Project to make way for the Labo Housing Association, we were once again re-established for the specific purpose of helping local communities receive the help and advice they need. Since then, the Limehouse Project has become a beacon of advice and guidance for a wide variety of peoples stemming from all walks of life. From elderly people facing isolation and ill health to young people in need of a mentor, our Advice and Training & Development Teams work hard to enhance the daily lived experiences of communities throughout Tower Hamlets.
