Stoneware Pottery Monster Workshop in Northumberland
This monstrous pottery class, now in its fourth year, designed for all ages, will see you create a plant pot using the slab-building technique in just ninety minutes! Although simple in principle, it will involve giving your monster character and personality, so lots of imagination will be needed to create your Frankenstein Pot! The basic method will be demonstrated at the start, and then it's up to you to create your pot! Once finished, your monster will stay at the studio to be fired, glazed and then re-fired. Then it's up to you to plant and nurture your monster pot - and grow something that matches the personality that has emerged - or use it for pens, brushes, whatever...
There are only eight places per session - this allows enough access to support for everyone to be successful! As this is a creative class designed to be accessible to all including younger potters, we must insist that a parent or guardian attends with any participant aged 16 or under. The numbers are limited to avoid over-crowding in the workshop. Each ticket books a maker's-seat at the pottery table. If you are going to have to attend as a (free) specator, please make a note of this at the time of booking. 
If you book a place for a young person and feel they will need help in creating their monster, please come along and help them (as a non-paying spectator). Even with only eight people booked in a session, it can be difficult to support everyone in the way they need. Again, please note this at the time of booking. 
The ticket price covers all tuition, tools, firings and glaze for one monster pot. Please note that these pots will be glazed in just one colour - dip-glazed as you request. 
A word of warning - the kiln Gods can be fickle, and despite doing everything possible, some pieces will fail, crack or blow up (!) in the kiln. Join us in sunny Northumberland for an evening of ancient and exciting pottery!

Raku is an ancient Japanese technique of firing pots, where the pieces are removed from the kiln red-hot, before being rapidly cooled either with or without combustibles (such as wood shavings) and sometimes in a reduction chamber (limiting access to oxygen so that the glazes do weird, wonderful and unpredictable things). 

We will provide you with up to three biscuit fired forms, and following a brief introduction (and safety talk) you will glaze and fire the pots using our Raku Kiln. This firing technique comes with a good deal of drama and jeopardy, and means that unlike our usual firings, you should have a glazed pot to wow your friends in approximately twenty minutes! The firing will happen outside in all weathers, the glazing can be done indoors, so please bring suitable clothing. 

Raku firing is brilliant for celebrating the science and mystery of glazing. It gives potters a chance to embrace the chaos and violence of rapid firing and cooling, producing pots that are unique and individual, and usually stunning. Some pots can even be fired without glaze, and then combustible materials such as feathers or horse hair draped or dragged across the surface producing carbonised, smoky abstract designs. This is known as Naked Raku!

The number of participants for each workshop is limited to six, to allow equal access to support, tools and tuition. It is also vitally important that instructions and safety guidalines are strictly followed. Anyone under the age of 16 needs to be accompanied by a responsible adult for the duration of the workshop. 

A word of warning - the kiln Gods can be fickle, and despite doing everything possible, some pieces will fail, crack or blow up (!) in the kiln. An Evening of Raku Firing!

The Return of Ravn Clay's ever-popular Pinch-Pot Pumpkin Workshop - now bigger and smaller and better and longer than ever before. Come and get creative forging your own autumnal treasure out of stoneware clay.

This ninety-minute pottery session, designed for the young but also the young at heart, will see you create a Halloween Pumpkin (or seasonal squash - it’s up to you) using a very simple Pinch- or Thumb-pot technique. Although simple in principle, it will involve some skill and imagination in joining and decorating your finished piece! We will work together to make the pots, and once finished, they will stay at the studio to be fired, glazed and then re-fired. All in time to be collected (or posted out) for Halloween!
Pumpkins will then be glazed in a single colour, chosen from the dipping glazes held in the studio. Orange will of course be available. Their stalks will be glazed in a contrasting colour. 

Again, we will be offering a range of sizes for your pumpkin creations. As such, the booking fee only books you a seat at the table - you will then need to pay on the day for what you make. Some people will be very happy with one mighty pumpkin - suitable as a paperweight or similar - others with a more delicate medium- or small-sized pumpkin, others might choose a family of baby pumpkins. 

This 2025 booking structure it is designed to allow people to make as many (or as few) of the pumpkin shape they most feel drawn to. There is no mandated size or number - and you are only limited by the time you have available. 

On the day, participants will need to pay the following for each pumpkin built;
Small pumpkin - £7 each
Medium pumpkin - £10 each
Large pumpkin - £13 each

There are only eight places per session - that allows enough access to support for everyone to be successful! Also, as this is a creative class designed for younger potters, it is expected that a parent or guardian will stay with any participant aged 16 or under. Each ticket will enable one participant to build pumpkins. If you are accompanying a younger potter, and want to join in, please book an additional space; if you will only attend to help them, no extra ticket is needed. 

A word of warning - the kiln Gods can be fickle, and despite doing everything possible, some pieces will fail, crack or blow up (!) in the kiln. There are no guarantees in pottery, not even for seasoned potters.

Enhance your time in Northumberland by visiting the beautiful Ford & Etal Estate and taking part in a workshop at Ravn Clay Pottery. 

Pottery is arguably the oldest industrial process that humans practice, and it remains a vibrant cultural and artistic pursuit across the globe. The types of clay, the methods of making, the glazes and firing methods, the uses and purposes of the finished pieces - all serve to make it an absorbing and life-affirming process, and definitely something where there is always more to learn. 

Join us on the three hour workshop, suitable for anyone, where you will work with stoneware clay to create your own pottery masterpieces. Hand building is the overlooked older sibling of the flashier wheel thrown pot, but remains an ideal place to learn for anyone wishing to play with clay. The session will involve a brief introduction to some basic rules for safe working in the Studio, alongside some principles to bear in mind when creating your own work. This will be followed by plenty of time for you to release your inner potter. It could be a vase, a mug, a candle holder, a sculpture ... if you can imagine it, we will do our best (together) to make it happen. 

After the three hours are up, your work will stay at the studio where it will be dried, fired, glazed and re-fired. Then you are welcome to return to the studio to collect it, or have it posted on afterwards. The whole drying-glazing-firing process could take up to a month, so please be patient. That said, what better way is there to build memories, create something for a special someone and be reminded of your time in the studio.

For this workshop there is no set agenda - if you bring the enthusiasm and imagination, I will provide all the materials and tools needed to create something unique, bespoke and wonderful. 

The number of participants for each workshop is limited to six, to allow equal access to support, tools and tuition. 

ALSO - We are now able to offer you the chance to return to the studio to glaze your work! If you are interested in seeing more of the ceramic process, or have created pots that would look even more awesome if they could be other than a single colour, you can now return once your work has been biscuit fired to glaze your pots. This shouldn't take more than a couple of hours, and incurs a small additional charge (£10) which you can either book now, or when you come to the studio on the day of your workshop. We can of course talk through the various options on the day - but the opportunity is there!

My personal journey into pottery was through evening classes in Edinburgh, where I quickly found I was absorbed and addicted by the tactile connection you can make with clay. I also quickly found that it worked wonders improving my mental wellbeing, providing a creative outlet, a process to focus on, and a distraction from the busyness of modern life. I firmly believe that pottery can help anyone find calm and focus in a restless and demanding world.

Enhance your experience in Northumberland with a visit to the stunning Ford & Etal Estate, where you can  enjoy a hands-on workshop at Ravn Clay Pottery. In 2025, we're excited to introduce full pottery days for the first time—offering an even more immersive creative experience! And, in conjunction with the Village Post Office and Coffee Shop, we will also provide you with lunch!

Pottery is one of the oldest crafts in human history and continues to thrive as both an art form and cultural tradition worldwide. From clay types and shaping techniques to glazing and firing methods, every step offers endless possibilities for creativity and discovery. It’s a truly engaging and rewarding process—one where there’s always something new to learn.

This whole-day workshop, open to everyone, offers you plenty of time to create your own pottery pieces using stoneware clay. Hand-building, often overshadowed by wheel throwing, is a fantastic way to explore working with clay—perfect for beginners and creative minds alike.

The session begins at 9.30am with a brief introduction to studio safety and key techniques before giving you plenty of time to bring your ideas to life. Whether it’s a vase, mug, candle holder, or sculpture—if you can imagine it, we’ll work together to make it happen! The whole day format means you will be able to create more considered work, explore more decorative techniques and try different hand-building methods.

Lunch at 12.30pm will be a chance to recharge and reflect. You'll be hosted by Doug and Rachel just over the road at the Village Post Office and Coffee Shop, before returning to continue in the studio. If you have any specific dietary needs please make sure we know about them before the day of your workshop. 

After the workshop, your pieces will stay in the studio to be dried, fired, glazed, and re-fired. Once they're ready, you can collect them in person or have them posted to you. Our beautiful studio is just five minutes walk from Ford Castle, and as Northumberland is an ancient landscape peppered with castles and towers of all shapes and sizes, inspiration for your own ceramic fortifications isn't hard to find!

Ford Castle - just five minutes from the studio!

This hand-building pottery session has been designed for the young and un-young, but will require focus and concentration! You will create a castle tower using the slab-building method before adding windows, arrow slits, roofs, draw-bridges, portcullises, chimneys etc (basically whatever you fancy) in just two hours! Although simple in principle, it will involve all your creativity - but first you'll have to decide whether your castle is the setting for a medieval siege or a fairy tale! The basic method will be outlined at the start, and then it's up to you to create your castle! Once finished, your castle will stay at the studio to be fired, dip-glazed and then re-fired. If you have added windows or other openings they would make beautiful tea light holders. [But we recommend battery powered tea lights or fairly lights at the towers will get very hot with a candle in...]

This brand-new pottery class will see you have a go at making one of the more challenging pottery projects - a Teapot! As a build with multiple parts and problems, we will try to build all together following a set template. The time allocation is to allow everyone a chance to succeed but we may finish early depending upon the size and composition of the group. Once finished, your teapot will stay at the studio to be fired, glazed and then re-fired. The ultimate test of a teapot is how it pours - and we can only really test this once the pot is through its complete build, fire and glaze process. And we would encourage you to embrace the process and perhaps not be too self-critical if the pot ends up being more decorative than functional. 

Please note that the workshop runs over lunch (which we don't provide) so please build the provision of a packed lunch into your day - or try one of our local eateries. (Ford Village Post Office does a lovely menue of hot and cold lunch options).

It is ideal for you if you&#39;ve just bought a kiln and want to get to grips with it, or if you use a studio where work is fired for you and you want to understand what happens, or if you&#39;ve had a kiln for a while but aren&#39;t sure if you&#39;re getting the most out of it.</p>
<p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">The course covers choosing, installing and maintaining your kiln; kiln safety; how a kiln heats up, how we measure it with thermocouples and cones, and how we control it with the kiln controller; what happens to clays and glazes during the firing; how best to load your kiln and when to unload it; and firing faults, their prevention and cure.</p>
<p fr-original-style="" style="color: var(--text); font-size: var(--font-size); box-sizing: border-box;">The course doesn&rsquo;t deal with older technology such as kiln sitters or kilns controlled manually through dials.</p>
