Hair care tips for every season

By Silk Pearl

Changing seasons impact our hair in unique ways, from winter dryness to summer humidity. By adjusting your hair care routine with each season, you can keep your hair healthy, strong, and vibrant. Here’s a look at practical tips for maintaining beautiful hair all year round. Winter hair care tips In winter, cold air and indoor heating can strip moisture from hair, leaving it dry and prone to breakage. Protecting your hair from these harsh conditions is essential. Moisturize regularly Dry winter air can make hair feel rough and brittle. Use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to keep your hair hydrated, and consider using a leave-in conditioner for extra protection. This helps seal in moisture, making hair less prone to frizz and breakage. Limit heat styling Winter weather already dries out hair, so limit heat styling tools like blow dryers and straighteners, which can further strip moisture. If you need to use them, apply a heat protectant spray to help reduce damage. Cover your hair Cold weather can make hair more vulnerable to damage. When outside, consider wearing a hat or scarf to shield your hair from the cold, dry air. Opt for a silk or satin-lined hat to avoid friction that can lead to frizz. Spring hair care tips Spring is a time of renewal, and as humidity levels increase, you may notice changes in your hair’s texture and manageability. Here’s how to keep your hair looking fresh. Exfoliate your scalp Over winter, dead skin and product buildup can accumulate on the scalp. Use a gentle scalp scrub or exfoliating shampoo to refresh your scalp. This helps improve hair growth and keeps your scalp healthy. Adjust your conditioner As temperatures rise, you may not need as heavy a conditioner. Switching to a lighter conditioner can prevent hair from feeling weighed down, giving you more volume and bounce. Embrace natural styles Spring’s humidity can make it difficult to keep styles smooth and sleek. Embrace natural textures and styles that work with the humidity instead of fighting it. This helps reduce the need for heat styling, keeping your hair healthier. Summer hair care tips In summer, sun exposure and chlorine from swimming pools can damage hair, making it dry and prone to breakage. Protecting your hair from these elements is key to maintaining its health. Use UV protection The sun’s UV rays can weaken hair, making it more likely to break. Look for hair products that offer UV protection to shield your strands from sun damage. Wearing a hat also provides good protection and keeps your scalp safe from sunburn. Rinse after swimming If you swim in pools or the ocean, chlorine and salt can leave hair feeling dry and brittle. Rinse your hair with fresh water after swimming to remove these drying elements, and consider applying a leave-in conditioner afterward for extra moisture. Deep conditioning Summer heat can strip moisture from hair, making it look dull and feel rough. Use a deep conditioning treatment once a week to restore moisture and keep your hair soft and shiny. Consider a Mulberry silk pillowcase Summer heat can make hair more prone to frizz, especially when sleeping on traditional pillowcases. Switching to a Mulberry silk pillowcase can help reduce friction, prevent hair breakage, and keep hair smoother, especially in humid conditions. Silk pillowcases are gentle on hair and help keep it manageable throughout the summer months. Fall hair care tips Fall brings cooler temperatures and lower humidity, making hair feel dry. Preparing your hair for the cooler season helps prevent issues like split ends and dryness. Trim split ends After summer, hair may be damaged from sun exposure, chlorine, and saltwater. Trimming split ends at the start of fall helps keep your hair looking healthy and prevents further breakage as the air gets drier. Rehydrate your hair With cooler air, your hair may start to lose moisture again. Switch back to a more hydrating shampoo and conditioner, and consider using a hair mask once a week to lock in moisture. Avoid over-washing In fall, as temperatures drop, hair does not get as oily. Avoid over-washing your hair, as it can strip away natural oils that help protect it. Washing your hair two to three times a week is usually enough to keep it clean without causing dryness. Protect from static Cooler weather often brings static electricity, which can make hair frizzy and hard to manage. Using a leave-in conditioner or a few drops of hair oil can help reduce static, leaving hair smooth and manageable. Final thoughts Taking care of your hair throughout the year requires small adjustments to your routine to match the season. Following these tips, and using silk products, you can protect your hair from the elements, maintain its health, and enjoy beautiful hair every season. Incorporating products like a Mulberry silk pillowcase can also add extra benefits by reducing frizz and protecting your hair while you sleep. With these simple steps, you’ll keep your hair looking its best, no matter the time of year.

6th March Daisy Chandley #Agent121. Looking for: ADULT FICTION, NON-FICTION

5.0(1)

By I Am In Print

LOOKING FOR: ADULT FICTION, NON-FICTION Daisy Chandley joined PFD in 2019 after graduating from the University of Oxford with a BA in Politics, Philosophy and Economics. She is an Associate Agent and assistant to Senior Agent Annabel Merullo and Head of Books Tim Bates as the UK sub-agent for New Directions Publishing in the US. Daisy is actively building a list of both fiction and non-fiction authors across a range of genres. With fiction, Daisy's wishlist roughly falls into three categories – if something feels like it overlaps between them, even better! 1) Sharp, original novels on the literary to upmarket spectrum, all the way from deeply dark and boundary-pushing books like Hurricane Season, Under The Skin or In The Cut to those balancing edge, heart and humour, like Detransition, Baby or A Visit From The Goon Squad. She loves irreverent wit, daring approaches in narrative or form, and seriously unsettling stories in equal measure, and if you can bring a few of those elements into one, it’ll go straight to the top of her. 2) Com-heavy rom-coms, whether in the dry but ultimately sob-inducing vein of Greta and Valdin or a Nora Ephron film, the escapist screwball delight of a Cary Grant classic, or the more unusual, genre-bending style of something like Palm Springs. Daisy is a sucker for Emily Henry and will always be happy to see an innovative take on tropey love stories, but is equally very keen to see to things a bit outside of the box, whether that’s integrating speculative elements, dark humour, or topical issues. In any case, humour and originality are my priority, and affectionately snarky bickering is the best way to make her fall head over heels with a couple. 3) Sleuths! Daisy is not the right person for police procedurals, but loves classic detectives and amateur sleuths. Whether it’s a delightful Knives Out or Nancy Drew homage or an intricate, unputdownable mystery on the darker side, the minute someone finds a good old fashioned clue, count her in! Overall, whether it’s a delightfully fun and scandalous page-turner or something really bold and experimental, if it’s stylish and smart – and maybe even a bit sexy – Daisy would love to see it. Daisy is definitely interested in literary speculative fiction, though not generally looking for hard SFF. Across the board, she is always looking for stories that explore sexuality, race, gender, and disability, and would particularly love to hear from writers whose voices and experiences aren’t given enough space in publishing. On the non-fiction side, Daisy is looking for bold new insights and underrepresented voices on popular science, nature writing, relationships, social issues and politics, and am always especially interested in fresh, playful and exciting writing on pop culture, love and the internet. She’d also love to see illuminating narrative non-fiction, whether a beautiful and lyrical exploration, or an enthralling and explosive deep-dive. A (large) handful of authors past and present whose work Daisy loves include Patricia Lockwood, Toni Morrison, Elif Batuman, Gillian Flynn, Shirley Jackson, Raven Leilani, Max Porter, Carmen Maria Machado, Virginia Woolf, Sayaka Murata, Kiley Reid, Sally Rooney, George Saunders, Joan Didion, Amy Liptrot, Ottessa Moshfegh, J.D. Salinger, Donna Tartt, Bret Easton Ellis, and Fernanda Melchor. Daisy is not the right fit for Children’s or YA authors.  Daisy would like you to submit a covering letter, 1 page synopsis and the first 2,500 words of your manuscript in a single word document. (In addition to the paid sessions, Daisy is kindly offering one free session for low income/under-represented writers. Please email agent121@iaminprint.co.uk to apply, outlining your case for this option which is offered at the discretion of I Am In Print).  By booking you understand you need to conduct an internet connection test with I Am In Print prior to the event. You also agree to email your material in one document to reach I Am In Print by the stated submission deadline and note that I Am In Print take no responsibility for the advice received during your agent meeting. The submission deadline is: Wednesday 26th February 2025

Llantrisant RCT

I set up my workshop in 1983 after leaving the Royal College of Art. In 1990 I established my studio in Model House Craft and Design Centre in Llantrisant. I work primarily in anodised aluminium producing one off and batch production jewellery. As the material is light and not too expensive I can make large, bold pieces which are both wearable and affordable. Most importantly, by anodising it, I can achieve bright and brilliant colour effects. My passions My three passions are colour, pattern and technique. I love making things and exploring the possibilities of different materials. Although I trained as a jeweller, my work has been heavily influenced by both traditional and contemporary textiles. Over the last twenty years I have also been developing work in felt. I combine this with my jewellery practice to create both functional pieces and work that is purely decorative. My creative ancestry inspires me Much of my recent work has evolved from looking back at my creative ancestry. It was my grandmothers who initiated my fascination with making objects. They passed on their traditional textile skills and started my passion for creating anything from colourful materials. In 2010, I received an Arts Council of Wales grant to help me purchase a laser cutter which enabled me to develop new work. I have used this to explore different materials such as taffeta, acrylic, cardboard and wood. This has opened up many exciting possibilities and I feel I have only just started this journey. I am involved in many craft groups and associations. I am regional co-ordinator and Chair of the International Feltmakers Association. I am a member of the Makers Guild in Wales, of the Association of Contemporary Jewellery and of MaP, a textile group. I have exhibited widely in the UK, Europe, Japan, USA and Canada.
