The Old Bakehouse

I’ve been up & running now for nearly 2 years, so I thought I’d add an update to my ‘About Me’ page! When I envisioned how The Old Bakehouse Cookery School would develop, I thought I’d be inundated with youngsters; helping them start out on the road to independence as I saw such a gap in the market. This still continues to be my driving force and I love watching the ‘penny drop’ when someone with no knowledge learns the basics & they then believe they can put a meal together. That still gives me enormous pleasure, however, the side to the business which has really taken off is the Group Bookings and I’m LOVING it!! Watching friends laughing together during a Hen party or ‘Special’ birthday party or seeing family (mums, dads, children, brothers or sisters) working together has been such a privilege. On the home front, it has been quite a rocky road through 2020 dealing with Covid-19 & all the lockdown restrictions we all endured. My son graduated in May (sadly without the ceremony) and he has now left home & is working in Cheltenham. My daughter is currently finishing her 2nd year at University which hasn’t been the experience she envisaged but she’s made the most of it. They have both taken on the skills of independent living & I couldn’t be more proud of their achievements. So, if you have a reason to gather a group together & you fancy doing something creative with them, give me a call & I can arrange a great day out for you. Or if you’re looking to get the basics under your belt as you move to a more independent phase of life, let me help you.

English Artist, Sarah Madsen attended Central Saint Martins School of Art & Design in London, England. There she gained a BA Hons Degree in Jewellery Design. This interest in 3D Design was quite a different direction from her first love of Fine Art. The Desire to follow figurative art has been a constant theme throughout her life as an artist. In 1992 the artist received a Travel Bursary from The Royal Society of British Sculptors on a Medal Design. She has also exhibited at various locations such as the Mall Galleries in London, Silvermine Art Centre in Connecticut and also at Steven Whyte Figurative Sculpture Studio in Carmel, California, USA. After 12 years of living in various locations in the USA. Sarah returned to the U.K in 2013 and started her business "Sarah Madsen Jewellery." “It all started from drawing, always drawing. This all eventually lead to starting my Jewellery business from the kitchen table. (With a family of 4 children, you can only imagine, I grew quickly off the idea of mealtimes.) To thankfully now, a full Jewellery workshop/garden studio in the wilds of Cambridgeshire. Raw materials are transformed by using traditional metalworking techniques such as hammering, filing, stone setting, wax carving and soldering. I create every single item by hand. Pursuing an organic, floral and figurative style. I'm always trying to create a classic or "living feeling" piece (such as the Tiaras.) My aim is to bring quality and design together, to produce carefully crafted Jewellery work that is of heirloom and artistic merit. I feel extremely proud that I'm able to be part of the importance of keeping our skills as craftsmen alive here in the U.K. "

ello, I’m Nina Squire and I’m an artist and art tutor. In normal times I have a travelling studio – an easel, a set of soft pastels and a flask of coffee and I’m happy! When I can, I love to take part in shows and events where I enjoy the chance to meet and chat to people whilst I draw. However, since March 2020, and with my regular events and shows canceled, like many others I’ve starting teaching online. Whilst I trained as a professional artist and illustrator at Falmouth University over 25 years ago, I’m mainly self taught. Most of my work is done in soft pastels, and my passion for the countryside and animals has brought me a long line of horse and dog commissions in this medium. My works can be seen in many homes and offices, not only locally in Dorset, the South West and London but also as far away as the USA and Japan. My loyal customers have been the inspiration for developing several strands to my work. Many of my clients have returned over the years, drawing their first dog, their first home, their first pony or their family portraits as the years pass, or capturing places that are special to them, perhaps their favourite holiday views and their treasured memories. I’m perhaps best known for portraits of people’s pets but, whatever the subject, for me it’s all about capturing a personality, or an essence, and creating something that looks real. With everything I paint I want the viewer to feel they can walk in to the picture – or perhaps my subject might be just about to jump out into the real world!

QUICK HISTORY TO BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU Originally coming from Gracie family, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu started gaining mainstream popularity after first UFC tournament in 1993. Won by Royce Gracie - 3 fights all won by submission. 30 years later it is one of the fastest growing sports worldwide and the sport is now practised and taught as part of the school curriculum across Abu Dhabi along with police forces adopting it for its versality and control. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) enables a smaller player to utilise leverage in order to subdue and submit a stronger opponent. This was the founding element unique to BJJ when it was first envisaged by Helio Gracie whom many consider to be creator of what modern Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is today. All levels are welcome here at our gym in Edinburgh, you will be training with mixture of fellow beginners and more advanced players with the primary goal being to build a foundational understanding of the positional elements that are vital to BJJ. The variety of techniques covered include a full range of self defence and martial arts movements focused efficiently and safely controlling an individual. Your fitness and overall strength will be vastly improved regardless of any prior training due to the unique and fun positions taught. In addition to this you will learn how to submit your opponent with limb/arm locks and choke-hold techniques. The most important lesson you will learn from the start will be how to safely takedown/control an opponent from standing all the way to the ground, this includes learning how to "breakfall" - a set of techniques that allow a person to transition from standing to the ground without fear of injury.

I have worked as a Holistic Beauty Therapist for over 25 years offering a sanctuary in my home based treatment room to relax pamper and indulge yourself in a spa style treatment at a fraction of a spa cost. I believe looking after our self is essential to our well being and functionality and shouldn’t just be restricted to a birthday or special occasion treat. In my youth I was a competitive gymnast and carried on training into my late 20s. Fitness and health have always been important to me and my family so understanding the value of good nutrition, regular activity and movement, also relaxation and rehabilitation time have always been paramount. My aim has always been to nurture the whole self as one , Mind, Body and Soul. My discovery of yin yoga and Pilates came from my search for something to control joint and muscle pain and reduced mobility due to fibromyalgia and osteo arthritis and perimenopause. For me it was an overwhelming response. The physical and mental benefits over time gave me such a great feeling of achievement. I had felt old before my time. My pain was constant, fatigue plagued me , my mobility was getting worse every winter and my mental health had written myself off. Knowing the positive impact on my own health encouraged me to train as a yin yoga instructor. It compliments my holistic beliefs and the satisfaction of gaining the ability to still be able even on my sore days to move more freely and control my discomforts. Not to forget the more positive mindset and confidence it has given me . That’s why I’m passionate about introducing you to Yin and Well-Being yoga and sharing the positive benefits far and wide.
