equality and rights network (earn)

The Equality and Rights Network (EaRN) enables any group, forum, organisation or individual to work in partnership with public services to advance equality, promote human rights, and to tackle inequality and poverty. The aim is to bring people together to have their voice heard. Since 2015 EaRN has been working alongside community groups, charities, individuals and our public sector partners to create opportunities for people to influence decision makers, learn, share, network and have their voice heard. EaRN is hosted by Volunteer Edinburgh and funded by the City of Edinburgh Council and NHS Lothian. We work with a range of public sector partners including the City of Edinburgh Council, NHS Lothian, Police Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and, Edinburgh College.

Our charity, BHA For Equality (BHA)’s aim is to challenge and address health and social care inequalities and to support individuals and communities to improve their health and wellbeing. BHA (BHAF, Black HIV/AIDS Forum) was started in 1990 and was formed from a grassroots movement set up in response to the lack of HIV information and services for Black communities in Manchester. It was developed to ensure that Black communities had access to accurate and culturally appropriate information on HIV. BHA further developed to advocate for the delivery of health and care services for Black and ethnic minority communities at local, regional and national level. BHA now runs funded projects for Black and ethnic minority communities and those who are marginalised or disadvantaged across the North West and Yorkshire.

Our activities involve working with Government, business, public services, Black-led organisations and the media. As a national organisation ARE want to maximise our work with central government departments by connecting more directly with local Black and Minority Ethnic organisations and mainstream activities aimed at closing racial inequalities. We strongly believes that race inequalities will persist and in some areas such as unemployment, take generations to close unless we start to inspire local BME individuals and organisations to get actively involved in local decision making processes.
