Creative is an international development organization dedicated to supporting people around the world to realize the positive change they seek.PAKISTAN Reading Project Pakistan is one of the few countries where illiteracy rates are actually increasing. Government statistics show that primary school enrollment is only 66 percent, which means some 7.2 million children are not in classrooms. The Pakistan Reading Project is a national program aimed at improving the quality of reading education in more than 23,000 public schools. It is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development. Under the International Rescue Committee’s purview, along with 10 local and international partners, Creative is delivering high-quality pre-service teacher education, training and professional development with an explicit focus on teaching reading. It will improve management throughout the education system through policy support and enhanced information, planning and monitoring systems. Complementing education initiatives by the Pakistan government, USAID and other international partners, the Pakistan Reading Project will promote a culture of reading nationally by improving organizations’ abilities to promote educational research, advocacy and reform, as well as expanding the number of colleges and universities offering rigorous teacher training and specialized education degrees. The Pakistan Reading Project will advance and develop the reading instruction skills of 94,000 teachers over the next five years and is expected to reach 3.2 million boys and girls with improved reading programs. The program will specially target underserved rural communities where access to elementary education is limited.

Amala (formerly known as Sky School) was conceived in 2017, in response to the gap in quality education provision for displaced youth. Our name is inspired by the Arabic word for hope, which our education embodies. We believe that young refugees - as all people - have a right to quality education. Yet, fewer than one in three refugees are able to complete their secondary education and only 6% are able to access higher education. In 2016, Amala co-founders Mia and Polly were working on a prestigious scholarship; the programme admitted refugees to schools around the world to complete their upper secondary education. They found that for every scholarship place available, hundreds of promising applicants were turned away. Their subsequent research showed that there were few educational opportunities available for refugee youth aged 16-25, many of whom are forced to drop out of educational systems due to the barriers they face. The idea for Amala was born: to provide transformational learning programmes for displaced youth and their host communities to improve their lives today and open up opportunities for the future. Amala has two key programmes: The Amala High School Diploma, the first high school diploma designed for and with refugee youth, and Changemaker Courses in areas such as Peace-building, Ethical Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship. Amala supports students to access further opportunities for education, training and work beyond their studies. Read more about our programmes here. Amala’s curriculum has been developed with the support of our educational partner UWC South East Asia, one of the largest international schools in the world with an expertise in values-based curriculum development, and led by UWCSEA’s former Director of Teaching and Learning Stuart MacAlpine, in collaboration with refugee youth and 150 educators. Amala learning focuses on the development of learner agency as well as competencies that enable learners to make change in their lives and communities. Amala learning is delivered through a blended learning model and in light of Covid-19 many courses have been adapted to an online model. Amala programmes are delivered both directly by Amala and in collaboration with partners whose missions are aligned to our own. Through collaborating with partners we have been able to bring transformational education to refugees in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Europe and Latin America. I have the privilege of heading up two incredible organisations – Progress Schools and Progress Careers – who work in very different ways, but with the very same objective and under one umbrella – Progress Education. At Progress Schools, we currently have thirteen independent secondary schools, located throughout England, who support local authorities and mainstream schools to work with young people who require an alternative approach to their education. Many students have diagnosed/undiagnosed SEND/SEMH and have likely experienced the trauma of a permanent exclusion from at least one mainstream school. Through our incredible workforce of teachers, engagement mentors, welfare officers and alike, we ensure a truly rounded curriculum that is delivered in a nurturing and supportive way, enable us to identify the potential and ambitions of our young people and work with them to support them to access those opportunities when they leave us at the end of year 11. In 2019, The Timpson Review of School Exclusions identified that more than half of young people who access alternative provision (AP) or PRU (Pupil Referral Unit) type settings become NEET (not in education, employment or training) when they leave school. Every year since our inception in 2016, we have supported more than 80% of our students progress into a positive destination when they leave us after year 11. This has also supported us to achieve consecutive ‘good’ judgements in every one of our Ofsted inspections. At Progress Careers (formerly CareersInc), we currently work with more than 60 secondary schools and academies, including multi academy trusts, to provide an exception careers guidance service. Our team of Level 6 and Level 7 qualified independent careers advisers, work with the students across each of these schools to provide that personalised guidance that they require to enable them to make the choices that recognise their potential and raise their ambitions. We work with schools and academies to support the full integration of Careers Education Information Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) throughout their curriculum, enabling a whole school approach to be implemented.
