Body doubling Short Flo Session for self-employed or employed women. It can feel isolating and lonely working from home or on the road. Short Flo is a 2-hour 15-minute session which includes a grounding practice and intention setting at the beginning, to bring us into our working head space. Join us for a FREE Tea 'N Chat with Textile artist and teacher LINDA HARVEY who talks about her work.
We are excited to have the immensely talented mixed-media textile artist Linda Harvey join us for our April Tea 'N Chat event. With over 25 years of experience in both teaching and creating, Linda brings a deep well of knowledge and a true passion for her craft. As the Head of Textiles at Archbishop Holgate's School in York and a dedicated member of York Textile Artists and The Society for Embroidered Work, Linda's commitment to her art is truly inspiring.
On the night, during the event, we will be running a mini competition to win one of Linda's new Books ‘INSPIRED BY YOU’ 100 Days of Textiles Art



Linda’s artwork is a mesmerizing fusion of rustic textures and innovative techniques. Drawing inspiration from her travels, she transforms photographs into expressive, abstract textile creations. Her work beautifully reflects her love for color and texture, incorporating elements such as hand-felted backgrounds, free-motion embroidery, intricate layering, and rust dyeing.

LINDA HARVEY  Textile Artist and Head of Textiles at Archbishop Colgate School, York

Linda studied Textiles and Surface Design at University Centre Somerset, graduating in 1994. She is a textile artist and Head of Textiles at a York secondary school and a member of York Textile Artists and The Society for Embroidered Work, which promotes and supports the best in stitched art worldwide.
The inspiration for her work mainly comes from the places she visits, taking photographs of anything that catches her eye. These photographs give a starting point from which her work evolves, often working on several pieces at a time, as she enjoys an expressive and experimental way of working.
Linda is inspired by rustic textures and the ageing process, drawn to anything corroded and tarnished and immediately seeing how it can be turned into a textile art piece. Colour and texture are the key elements in her work.



The Textiles Skills Centre Associates are a team of volunteers that manage the social media platforms and website, and offer support, mentorship and advice to textile teachers and trainees. We organise free resource networking events each month (Tea 'N Chat) and are always on hand to help and encourage when needed.

Someone you know recently said with an Austrian accent that "You should always have a Plan" and we do agree when it comes to Drawing, Painting or any Creative activity. Here is one plan we created for you.

Master plant tinctures are sacred, natural extracts derived from powerful Amazonian plants, each carrying unique healing properties. 

Used traditionally in shamanic practices, these tinctures provide a gentle, yet profound way to heal, release emotional blockages, and restore physical vitality. 

Instructions:
1. Dosage & Absorption
Empty Stomach for Optimal Absorption: Take your tincture on an empty stomach, ideally at least 30 minutes before eating or 2 hours after your last meal. This enhances absorption and allows the plant’s energy to work more directly.
Sublingual Method (Under the Tongue): Place the recommended number of drops directly under your tongue and hold them there for about 1-2 minutes before swallowing. This method allows the plant’s essence to enter your bloodstream more quickly and efficiently.
Swallowing & Following with Water: If needed, you can follow with a sip of water or herbal tea, but avoid strong flavours that might interfere with the plant’s subtle energy.
2. Dietary Considerations
Avoid heavy, overly processed, or highly stimulating foods (e.g., caffeine, sugar, alcohol, or spicy foods) before and after taking the tincture, as they may interfere with the plant’s effects.
Simple, grounding meals such as lightly cooked vegetables, whole grains, and herbal teas, support a clearer connection to the plant.
If fasting or eating lightly while working with the tincture, listen to your body’s signals and adjust as needed.
3. Setting an Intention
Focused Approach: Working with one plant tincture for 1-2 weeks with a clear intention allows for a deeper relationship with the plant’s wisdom. Reflect on what you’re calling in whether it’s emotional healing, clarity, protection, or insight.
Intuitive Use: While structured use can be powerful, you can also work with the tincture as needed, trusting your intuition to guide you. It is safe for daily use if you feel called to it.
Journaling & Reflection: Keeping a small journal can help you track any insights, shifts, or emotions that arise during your work with the plant.
4. Adapting the Experience to You
There’s no rigid rule - some people benefit from structured, intentional work, while others find a more fluid, intuitive approach works best.
Pay attention to how your body, emotions, and energy respond. If you feel resistance or discomfort, pause and reflect on what the plant might be showing you.
Trust your own process and know that the relationship with plant medicine is deeply personal.
By approaching master plant tinctures with respect, presence, and openness, you can allow their wisdom to guide you in a way that best serves your journey. 🌿✨

Likewise, a New Weird story exploring the effects of climate change on humanity and society, in the vein of Jeff VanderMeer or China Mi&eacute;ville, would not go remiss; she&rsquo;s also keen to see dark, literary westerns reminiscent of Cormac McCarthy&rsquo;s oeuvre.&nbsp;On rare occasion, a moody psychological suspense story, where a heady sense of atmosphere reigns, is welcome. Also, more terrible women please. (Please do bear in mind that, despite a deep and abiding love for all things Tolkien and Star Wars, she is&nbsp;not&nbsp;the right fit for epic or high fantasy, nor space-faring science fiction. Julie Gourinchas (she/they) is developing a selective list focused on upmarket and literary adult fiction across a wide variety of genres. Writers she represents have been nominated for the British Book Awards, the Hugo Awards, the BSFA Awards, and the Saltire National Book Awards, among others.

In fiction, she's drawn to a uncommon voices, and striking, intelligent writing – whether vibrant and floral or tense, quick, and sparse – as well as texture in both tone and setting (particularly anything with a strong aesthetic). Above all, she is looking for hooky, high-concept work, but her taste can perhaps be best summarised as "the weird, dark, and gruesome." 

While literary-speculative is her sweet spot, she considers herself genre agnostic within upmarket/literary fiction, and remains open to compelling and well-executed genre overlap. These include:

upmarket and literary horror: especially featuring feminist or cultural themes, body horror, mangled nature, or cosmic, Lovecraftian vibes and looking for a fresh, literary take on vampires. Think Mona Awad, Lucy Rose, Julia Armfield, Jade Song, Stephen Graham Jones.
dark and spiky literary dramas with high emotional stakes - think Eliza Clark, Julia May Jonas.
razor-sharp dark academia particularly with something to say about the complex and exploitative systems within academia, more The Secret History, less The Atlas Six.
gothic fiction, specifically regional gothic anchored in an evocative sense of place in the vein of Alexis Henderson and Alix E. Harrow.
grounded fantasy or otherwise speculative fiction with coherent, sharp worldbuilding that feels recognisable and familiar, or directly set in our world. Play with magic, faith, and technology in your story like Babel, or a more literary version like Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries, Blood Over Bright Haven, Metal From Heaven.
Searing contemporary fiction centred on themes of identity and belonging: think Sally Rooney, Torrey Peters, or what Saltburn should have been.
dark westerns, in particular any that play with the truth and false hopes of the American Dream.
magical realism both whimsy with a touch of darkness, and darkness with a touch of whimsy.
unhappy romances
anything -punk:
steampunk, solarpunk, silkpunk, clockpunk, dieselpunk, cyberpunk and more of these! Suffice to say: if you can successfully and smartly comp to Arcane, Julie wants to see it!
character-focused historical fiction with a literary edge: think Lauren Groff, Anthony Doerr, Eleanor Catton, particularly in the 19th and 20th centuries; including and indeed encouraging alternate history.

Stylistically, Julie loves uncommon, thought-provoking experimentation with both prose and form, and anything spiky, toothy, and dark. Happy endings, to her, should feel earned. In all things, compelling character development should come first. First person narration is not impossible, but hard to sell. A smart genre blend is always welcome, as is any fresh-eyed approach to a well-trodden trope. Julie is also very much looking for her first romantasy – especially one that approaches this exciting new genre from a fresh, bold perspective.
