This QA Level 2 Award in citizenAID (RQF) course is a half-day course to teach the skills and knowledge needed in case one finds themselves in the middle of a terrorist attack. This is a theoretical and practical introductory group tuition during which you will be taught common, essential leather crafting and basic sewing techniques.You will be taught how to correctly use hand tools, how to hand sew leather and understand the most common finishing techniques used in bag and accessory making.You will learn about different types of leather and understand how to select the correct type of material(s) for your project. You will receive an overview of the technical aspects of working with leather and constructing bags and accessories such as preparing, marking, cutting, gluing, reinforcing, debossing and more.You will produce your own samples of work to take home with you.You will receive relevant, useful and informative handouts as well as lists of leather and tool suppliers.This is a professional course delivered by a prototype maker and manufacturer, with the aim of providing an overview and hands-on experience on more common leather working practices.   At the end of the tuition you will have:– Gained an understanding of leather types and tanning methods– Understood what it means to work with different leather types and thicknesses and have the ability to source and select the correct tools and materials for your projects.– Gained confidence in using specific tools for preparing, marking, finishing and cutting leather.– Understood and practiced leather craft techniques such as beveling and burnishing techniques– Learnt basic leather hand sewing techniquesWHAT WILL BE TAUGHT?Below is a list of topics covered during the classes:– Understanding leather: overviews on types of leather, tanning, finishings and best use– Vegan leathers: an overview on different types and features– Understanding the importance of choosing the right materials for your project and the right tools for your materials– Leather preparing, pattern placement and marking on leather– Cutting complex shapes using a variety of tools– Using leather punches– Understanding the use of skiving, beveling and grooving– Finishing leather edges: painting vs burnishing– Using various leather glues and tapes– Understand the use of reinforcements, fusings and stabilisers to back leather– To learn basic leather hand sewing techniques– To understand the tools and materials used in saddle stitching– Prototyping and manufacturing leather goods: mentions of different working methods, machines and tools   IMPORTANT TO KNOW:We will always try to cover as much on the syllabus as possible and depending on your ability and previous experience, we might not be able to complete the program or we might instead be able to teach you additional techniques relating to the above listed topics, such as:– Understanding fittings, closure types, fastening techniques and tools: sam browns, magnets, pop buttons, eyelets, etc– Sew and finish simple zips styles, handles and straps– Understanding options and the construction of how to line bags and accessories INCLUDED IN THE COURSE:You will be provided with useful digital and paper handouts which contain:– A list of tools and materials used during the lesson(s), including a description of what they are and how they are used– A list of recommended suppliers for both leather and fittings (physically in London and online)– A glossary containing information about leather types and characteristics WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?This course is suitable for total beginners, beginners with some experience and intermediate.You should be able to use measurements and understand verbal and written English instructions.   ARE THERE ANY OTHER COSTS? It's ideal for anyone who wants to explore memoir writing and storytelling techniques, whether you’re reflecting on your own life, telling a loved one’s story, or capturing memories tied to a craft or creative activity. You will: Learn practical techniques for uncovering and organising your ideas through memory mapping. Practice sensory writing to make your memories vivid and immersive. Write a heartfelt first scene of your memoir or personal essay, using a simple three-part structure: Hook, Scene, and Reflection. Share your work (optional) and receive encouraging feedback in a supportive group setting. Emma will provide guidance and step-by-step activities to help you structure and enhance your writing, and you will leave with the start of a memoir chapter, or personal essay, and practical tools to continue writing at home. All materials are included, plus a handout with writing prompts, tips, and recommended memoirs for further inspiration. Just bring your ideas and enthusiasm! If you have specific memories or objects you’d like to write about, feel free to bring those for inspiration. More information The Arienas Collective workshops, courses and events are run from a welcoming and supportive environment within a Georgian mews home in Edinburgh’s City Centre New Town. We invite you to join us, leave any day-to-day worries behind and immerse yourself in being creative. Spaces on our workshops and courses are limited so that our creative team of artists and makers can offer you the hands-on help and support you need to make the most of your time with us. Our taster and introductory workshops focus on teaching creative skills and methods you can continue practising at home, using affordable materials and equipment. Where more expensive equipment is required we will mention this in the workshop description. All the equipment and materials you need are included in the price, unless stated otherwise. Light refreshments from local suppliers are provided. On full day workshops you are welcome to bring your own lunch to eat inside or out. There is also a wide range of independent sit-in or takeaway delis, cafés, and restaurants, plus a range of supermarkets all within a 5-10 minute walk. Accessibility The workshop space is on the first-floor of our Georgian mews home and unfortunately we do not have lift access. Blue badge holders can park outside our front door on the single yellow line by arrangement. Allergies The workshop space is in our open plan living space and is not nut free. Please let us know about any skin or food allergies before booking. We offer a dairy-free milk and gluten free snack alternative. Minimum number no refund policy To ensure we can always pay our creatives a fair fee, we require a minimum number of bookings for each workshop and for this reason bookings are non-refundable. Should we have to cancel due to low numbers, we will offer you the option to swap to an alternative date or workshop, or to request a refund. We do our very best to avoid cancellations. Since we often get late bookings, we keep our workshops on sale for as long as possible. We realise that some of you travel from afar, so if you book a space and have not yet received an email confirming your workshop is going ahead and need to make plans for your trip, please get in touch before booking any travel or accommodation so we can update you on booking numbers. Our Cosmeti-Craft Workshops are a great way of learning a new skill and having some fun making your own cosmetics. Children from age 5 upwards can have fun learning about colours and smells while older children experience a more detailed tutorial on the uses and effects of cosmetic ingredients.
