Short Circuit has an international outlook, helping Scotland-based filmmakers navigate the hugely exciting opportunities of the short film and first feature world. Sharp Shorts Our short film scheme – Sharp Shorts – invites teams, writers and writer/directors to submit their short film ideas, and also encourages directors and producers to submit a note of interest to take part. This year, up to 12 projects will be selected to take part in a 3-month development phase. After pitching for a production award in September 2022, up to 9 projects will be selected to receive up to £15,000 of funding. Applications for Sharp Shorts 2022 are now closed. Further information is published here. First Features First Features supports projects from initial idea to fully polished draft. There will be two levels of awards, distinguished between early development (to treatment or first draft) and further development (second draft and beyond). You will be able to apply via the online application form for support at either level. The scheme is for writing, writing/directing and producing talent from all across Scotland who have bold and compelling fiction projects with theatrical ambition and the potential to resonate with audiences globally.

Green Ash Chairs

green ash chairs

Starting with a freshly cut log you will make your own chair and, at the end of the course, take it home with you. Hopefully it will be a friend for life and something to bequeath to future generations! If you are looking for a digital de-tox, a few days in the woods and learning something new, this course might be for you. By following a few commonsense rules, anyone can work with greenwood tools safely and proficiently. If you like working with your hands you can discover for yourself the joy of making something useful and beautiful from green wood. No previously learned skills are required. However some may find the course physically taxing. The working day is long, from 9.00 am till 6.00 pm each day. img_0087.jpg The course instructor is Peter Young. Peter recently retired from directing a study retreat centre in the Scottish Borders. He is passionate about green woodworking and has learned yurt-making from the legendary Hal Wynne-Jones and chairmaking from the equally legendary Mike Abbott. Mike has done more than anyone else in the UK to rescue green woodworking from oblivion, and is supportive of these courses. Peter feels deeply that this traditional type of work has wisdom in it, respecting both the materials and ourselves. 'We can learn a lot from it,' he says. 'We work with Nature, not against it. We use only local, sustainably grown timber, often from coppiced woodland. Every bit is used and nothing wasted. But more than this, we try to see what the particular log is doing, how the grain is flowing and from this we learn what part it wants to play in the whole chair.' Where are the courses? The course venue is Broughtonknowe, a privately owned wood, 25 miles south of Edinburgh on the A701. By car, it is within easy reach for commuting daily from Edinburgh (45mins) and 75 minutes from Carlisle. The course takes place in a quarry within the woodland. The quarry has greened up over the past hundred years, creating a beautiful sheltered setting for outdoor activities.

Chrysalis Craft Coventry

chrysalis craft coventry

Coventry

Chrysalis Craft Coventry CIC was founded in March 2020 in response to the urgent unmet needs of BAME and migrant communities who were disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The lockdown has challenged the mental health and wellbeing of everyone, more so for asylum seekers, refugees and migrants in our communities. Many have experienced unimaginable trauma and have seen major disruptions in their life already. The pandemic has amplified further the existing mental health problems. Often left in limbo, not able to take on higher education studies and not allowed to work (with many refugees under or unemployed) and likely to face loneliness or worse, direct discrimination, within their new communities. Chrysalis Craft Coventry CIC run sessions and activities to help with healing, using art and different artistic methods for wellbeing. The aim is to build self-esteem and friendship through artistic techniques, using art to work against loneliness as a result of language, cultural and ability barriers. The social enterprise supports people from a variety of different backgrounds, focussing on disadvantaged adult women immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers. Focusing on women who came to Coventry and the surrounding area recently, and those who have been here for a long time, but who have experienced barriers to integration. Local authority, NHS and charities working with migrants’ commission and refer people onto in-person and online workshops. Grant funding supports materials and content development. Over the short period of the start-up, Chrysalis Craft Coventry CIC supported thousands of individuals suffering from loneliness, domestic abuse, stress, anxiety, depression, homesickness and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder because of life experiences with positive results. During the pandemic the workshops have proven invaluable, acting as a safe environment and an information and signposting service. Directing people to urgently needed services they could not reach due to language barrier or stigma caused by misinformation.

Black Oxford Untold Stories

black oxford untold stories

High Wycombe

Hello and welcome. My name is Pamela Roberts. I am an award-winning creative producer, historian, Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts, Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, Eccles Centre Visiting Fellow at the British Library, and the Founder and Director of Black Oxford: Untold Stories. BACKGROUND I set up Black Oxford Untold Stories after a crude insult from a member of staff at the Oxford City Tourist Information Centre. They blatantly refused to acknowledge that Black people studied at the University. Instead, stating the only contribution Black people had made to the University city was to the transportation system in driving the buses and working in the car factory. The insult was my impetus to find out more information about the university's black scholars. What I found was the university was known for its numerous heads of states, academics, writers, scientists, politicians, philosophers. The name of Percy Bysshe Shelley, Oscar Wilde, C.S. Lewis, Margaret Thatcher, Harold Wilson, and Bill Clinton are familiar to many. But what about its Black scholars? Oxford University has seen many African, African-Caribbean, African-Americans, and Black British scholars pass through the hallow halls and colleges of the illustrious university. Christian Frederick Cole, the first Black African scholar at the university in 1873; Kofoworola Moore, the first African woman to achieve a degree from St Hugh’s College in 1935, Alain LeRoy Locke, the first Rhodes Scholar to attend the university in 1907, Grantley Adams, a student of St. Catherine’s, went onto become the first Premier of Barbados. The list is endless. Black Oxford Untold Stories was born. BLACK OXFORD UNTOLD STORIES Black Oxford Untold Stories celebrates the contributions and legacies of Oxford University's Black scholars from the turn of the 20th century to the present day. Over the years, Black Oxford Untold Stories has contributed significantly to disrupting the traditional narrative and visual imagery of Oxford University by challenging the attitudes and perception of the University's staff, students, faculties, and broader communities that historically Black students did not study at the University. I facilitate this work by delivering workshops, lecture programmes, on-line lectures, producing events and creative projects and through my book, Black Oxford the Untold Stories of Oxford University's Black Scholars (Signal 2013). Black Oxford Untold Stories achievements include My seminal work as the initiator for formal recognition for Christian Frederick Cole, the University of Oxford's first Black student, 1873. The acquisition of the first Black Oxford memorial plaque at University College. The plaque was unveiled in 2017 by Sir Ivor Crewe, Master, University College, to commemorate Cole's significant achievements. Writing, producing, and directing the first film about Christian Cole, England's first black barrister, filmed on location at University College, University of Oxford, The Inner Temple, and honour of filming and hosting the screening at the Old Bailey. Initiating the placing of a photograph of Kofoworola Moore, Oxford University’s first African woman scholar at St Hugh’s Colleges. I had the honour of unveiling the photograph with the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford and the Principal, Dame Elish Angiolini. I have worked with the following organisations, universities, colleges in delivering workshops, seminars, lectures, events, and creative projects.

Voice In The Room

voice in the room

Newcastle Upon Tyne

I was working with someone recently who held a very senior position in an organisation and he hadn’t been in a good place. He was terrified of an upcoming key note he had to deliver. At the end of our session he said: “I can’t believe it Jo but I’m really looking forward to it now. I’ve got the tools I need”. That is why I do what I do. What makes Voice in the Room different from other training companies is the different perspective Jo brings. Her unique approach has been shaped by her background and story. It’s worth understanding in full so grab a cuppa or a glass of something and dive in. Logo Icon About Up About Down Theatre Director 1999 - 2007 Theatre Director “Just before the play was due to start my group refused to go on. We were backstage and you could hear this buzz of expectation from the audience outside. I’d used all the security resources available to put it on and here I was with my actors saying they wouldn’t go through with it” Jo Darby set up Voice in the Room in 2016 but the seeds for the business were planted many years before. As a teenager with a love of acting she attended the National Youth Theatre. “I saw how directors were trying to help us to get the message of the play across and make a connection with the audience. That’s what they facilitated and that was the bit I found really interesting. How do you support people in a really positive way to achieve that? That was the point when I decided I didn’t want to do acting, I wanted to direct. When I later had the opportunity to do that at University, I grabbed it with both hands. Directing was a hobby that became a job.” As a Theatre Director Jo began creating productions in the North East at Northern Stage and the Live Theatre. She went onto launch her own theatre company and travel overseas to direct for the Australian Theatre for Young People before later working at Pilot Theatre Company and Bristol Old Vic. One early experience creating a brand new play with inmates at Northallerton Young Offenders Institute was particularly influential. “I was left on my own with the group to get on with rehearsals when one day things all kicked off, a fight broke out, there were chairs flying, the lot. I never felt threatened. I knew it wasn’t aimed at me and I was able to reassure staff such that we were allowed to continue. I persuaded the governor we should put on the play in front of the whole prison – in the prison chapel. Looking back now this seems unbelievable but it’s true! Just before the play was due to start my group refused to go on. We were backstage and you could hear this buzz of expectation from the audience outside. I’d used all the security resources available to put it on and here I was with my actors saying they wouldn’t go through with it. So I had to give them a big pep talk about how this was their opportunity to be heard and express themselves, remind them that they felt no one ever listened to them and this was their big chance. Eventually, they went out and did it. Everyone cheered and it all turned out fine. I still think now, goodness know’s what would have happened if it hadn’t gone ahead!

Description Drama And Theatre Studies Diploma For individuals with a deep-rooted passion for the world of theatre and an eagerness to study its multifaceted dimensions, the Drama And Theatre Studies Diploma offers a comprehensive journey into the heart of drama and theatre arts. Delivered through a dynamic online platform, this course has been meticulously crafted to ensure learners get the most immersive experience possible, right from the comfort of their homes. From understanding the essence of drama and theatre to exploring the iconic stages of classical theatres that span from Greece to the Renaissance, the course covers it all. Students embark on a voyage through time, tracing the evolution of theatre, studying various movements that have shaped modern theatre, and immersing themselves in the tales of notable playwrights whose works have left an indelible mark on the world of theatre. The Drama And Theatre Studies Diploma is not just about understanding the history and the classics; it is equally about the art that breathes life into scripts - the art of acting. As part of this diploma, students gain insight into what it takes to embody a character, the nuances of emotion, and the techniques that distinguish good acting from great acting. Behind every successful play or drama, there is a visionary, and in theatre, that visionary is often the director. This course provides a detailed look into the intricate world of directing and production, throwing light on how ideas are birthed, nurtured, and then brought to life on stage. In a world that is constantly evolving, so is theatre. It reflects societal changes, challenges norms, and often serves as a mirror to society. The Drama And Theatre Studies Diploma provides a keen understanding of how drama has been used as a powerful tool for social commentary, influencing change and challenging the status quo. But theatre is not confined to a particular region or culture. It is a global phenomenon. With this course, learners will journey across continents, exploring global theatre traditions, understanding how diverse cultures interpret and represent drama, and how regional nuances can give a completely different dimension to a play or performance. In the contemporary era, technology plays an undeniable role in enhancing the theatre experience. From lighting to sound to visual effects, the integration of technology has transformed the way audiences experience theatre. This diploma sheds light on this symbiotic relationship, elaborating on how technology and theatre have come together to create magic on stage. Lastly, any art form is incomplete without criticism. It is what shapes, refines, and sometimes even redefines art. The Drama And Theatre Studies Diploma introduces learners to the world of theatre criticism and reception. Here, they will understand the importance of critical reception, how critiques can influence a play's success, and the role they play in the continuous evolution of theatre. In summary, the Drama And Theatre Studies Diploma is not just a course; it's an expedition into the mesmerising world of theatre.
