We are also known for our special intimate performances of carols and performances of medieval and renaissance music. Our most recent show, I Spie (2021), starring Dominic Marsh, Danny Webb and Alice Imelda, toured the UK and was released on film. It tells the little known story of composer John Dowland and his brush with the Elizabethan secret service. Pre-pandemic, in 2019/20 we undertook 28 performances & 4 public workshops. We have performed at Buxton International Music Festival, Music at Oxford (3 performances) Little Missenden Festival, Brighton Early Music Festival (4 performances), Keele Concerts Society, Kingston Early Music, Totnes Early Music Society – and working with other groups including The Sixteen, we spearheaded our own Liverpool Early Music Festival. In 1998 & 1999, Jon returned to India and studied with Kailash Nishad in Benares, (Varanasi) in North India, a city renowned for the study of North Indian (Hindustani) music. In 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 & 2005 Jon organised performances & workshops for Kailash in the UK, where he delivered workshops in universities & performed Tabla solos at Arts Centres & venues in the South West UK. During these month long visits to the UK, Kailash stayed with Jon in Devon and continued Jon’s tabla tuition. They also gave performances together, with Taaliqa playing the first set & Kailash performing tabla solo in the second. In 2005 they also performed together in a collaborative finale. What I remember most of my childhood is drawing, drawing all the time, every opportunity. My father loved music and loved to dance. We would dance together. My mother designed clothes and was a dressmaker and cake baker. My parents had arrived in England in 1954 from Jamaica and lived in the Brixton area. They lived on Concannon Road from around 1955 and moved to Railton Road in 1959 after they had wed at the church at Santley Street, around the corner of Concannon Road. Today I live by my painting and continue in my mothers’ and fathers’ legacy as a creator. I am open to producing works of art by commission. painting Painting is expression, a way of me talking with everybody else about how I feel, like a bluesman would play his blues. The whole thing is about feeling. Painting is blues. I paint those feelings that are from inside my head, from inside my soul. The spiritual part of all this is the heritage, the thing that comes from my ancestors, the ingredients that everybody talks about when they talk about the past, where we all come from, which is DNA, the genes. What I am doing is recording the memory that comes to me from nature, along with the music that came from West Africa and the Atlantic experience, all of it, and what I do then is give it form, give it some skin, textures and colours, the whole thing is like an umbilical cord that has not lost its life force, it is the whole nine yards. Jackie Burton Jackie Burton Born and raised in West Yorkshire, I took a trip to London in 1983 and have remained here since then. I am a black woman, a Christian and a mother. A retired Social Worker, I have a passion for children, young people and their families. Over the last 40 years I have had roles in church including youth leader and Pathfinder club leader as well as teaching in children’s Sabbath school & children’s church. It was my joy, to find the most creative and interesting ways to engage children and young people with so many varied learning styles. Over the last 12 years of my career I was a Team Leader for a local authority Fostering Service; having responsibility for facilitating training, assessing foster carers and placing children from diverse and challenging backgrounds with those carers. Life-long learning is part of who I am and I started becoming more interested in paper crafts when my now, 25 year old son was around 3 years old. We started to make cards for every occasion and stopped buying them from the shops. Paper crafts opened the door to so many other crafting pursuits and my love for crafting has only grown since then, from wedding decoration, decoupage & canvas art to knitting & simple sewing, I have done many and various and still do. Nothing pleases me more than sharing my love for something with others, and creative crafts is certainly one of those very many things. I have done this via children’s craft workshops; transforming spaces for Vacation Bible School (VBS); school holiday clubs; card making workshops for children and adults. If it includes crafting, I will consider it. Currently I am involved in a weekly Craft Café project where we are using hobby crafts to support people in our community who may be lonely, socially isolated or feeling low. Norman Mine Norman Mine Norman Mine is an Italian-born London based multidisciplinary artist whose practice encompasses visual art, acting and social work. Using autobiographical scenarios as a starting point, Mine's practice expands into fantasy and delusion and in his alter-ego, Dino Desica, an aspiring Italian actor who exists only through a video format, as "performance to camera", becoming an ephemeral simulation of the self. Mine's practice explores the infinite possibilities of the self, the authenticity and the structures of inclusion and exclusion in which it is constructed. For the past three years Mine has run creative workshops co-working with people of different generations, backgrounds, and abilities; developing a specific approach that unsettles the scenario in which participants perform to stimulate creativity and imagination as an opportunity to navigate within. Mine has obtained a Masters Degree in Fine Art at Goldsmith College in 2018. His work has been shown at Performance Istanbul (2021), disORDER Live Collective (2020), Deptford X (2019), The Koppel Project (2019), Platform1 Gallery (2018), Art Night London (2017). Kelta Fit is the brain child of Ceilidh Club founder Ed McCabe and Licence to Ceilidh’s Ali Barnes, but we needed a bit of help along the way! Here’s a bit more about the Kelta Fit team: Kelta Fit Team Ed McCabe – Kelta Fit Co-Founder: Ed is also the founder of the hugely popular Ceilidh Club in London. It started in 1998 with a handful of friends and family and has now grown into something bigger with hundreds of people attending the (almost) weekly events. Ed has always been into fitness and it has been a long held dream of his to translate the fun and calorie burning aspects of a Ceilidh into something people can do at home or in a class. Ali Barnes – Kelta Fit Co-founder / Choreographer: Ali studied dance from a young age and has been attending ceilidhs regularly since childhood. She has been playing Fiddle in ceilidh and folk bands for almost 10 years and is also an experienced ceilidh dance caller. Ali joined Licence to Ceilidh around 5 years ago and very quickly went on to co-run the band alongside Philippe as well as continuing to play in it. Together they’ve transformed the band into what it is today, taking it to new levels never heard of before for a ceilidh band including numerous TV performances and industry awards. Philippe Barnes – Kelta Fit Musical Director: Philippe also co-runs Licence to Ceilidh and his extensive ceilidh and musical experience made him the perfect man in the Kelta Fit team to create the soundtrack! Philippe has a 1st class honors, MA in Irish Traditional Music Performance and has toured all over Europe, America & Australia with the David Munnelly Band and Celtic Jazz-fusion group All Jigged Out. He’s a three-time runner up in the BBC Young Folk Awards and his TV and recording credits include MTV, The Discovery Channel, ITV, TG4, BBC Scotland, BBC Radio 2, 3 & 4 and feature films including ‘The Imposter”, “Fraternity” and “Dark Horse”. Francesca Leyland – Kelta Fit Instructor / Choreographer: Francesca is a talented actress and dancer from Lerwick on the Shetland Isles. She has a background in highland dance and in her teens studied at the Dance School of Scotland in Glasgow where she gained an A.T.C.L diploma from Trinity College London, before later going on to gain a BA Hons Degree in Musical Theatre from Arts Educations School in London. Her past show credits include Les Misrables (West End) and The Bakers Wife. She is a popular dance teacher in Sussex and is also a caller with Licence to Ceilidh, performing with the band every week teaching ceilidh dances to crowds of willing punters! Frances Crawford – Fitness Consultant: Frances is an experienced nutritionist and personal trainer based in Florida, USA. She is a certified gym instructor in the UK with Future Fit and a certified personal trainer in the USA with the National Association of Sports Medicine. She also has qualifications in Sports Nutrition and Weight Management with the America Council of Exercise and is about to embark on her first NPC Fitness Competition! Cat Perry – Instructor Trainer: Cat is an Edinburgh-born and based Dance and Fitness Instructor with her own Teaching Company – Dance Division. Cat is a qualified Dance Teacher and Aerobics Instructor with lots of knowledge and expertise in the industy as well as experience in training and mentoring others. Cat has run her own Dance and Fitness teaching company since 2007. She holds dance and fitness qualifications and has a wealth of hands-on experience and knowledge.
