Steelworking still has a presence in Workington in the shape of the TSP heavy engineering works. The last part of the main steelworks disappeared in 2005 with the closure of the rail mil and long welded rail plant. Rails had been made in Workington and exported over the world for 128 years. Leyland established its national factory in 1971 at nearby Lillyhall. Over a life of less than a quarter of a century the factory despatched thousands of Nationals, Lynxes, Olympians, Titans and rail buses. As well as being bus (and rail) enthusiasts, we want to mark the unique contribution of the town to the country’s economic and cultural development. WTHT (Workington Transport Heritage Trust) Our vehicles include a number of buses, fire engines and other vehicles some of which are used in community events. Volunteers are engaged in restoring, maintaining and operating these historic vehicles. We have an extensive archive of local bus and rail material. This includes posters, signs, publicity materials, books, magazines, drawings, photographs, and petrol pumps. Our shop at Workington railway station sells hot & cold drinks, snacks, souvenirs, WTHT branded items and second hand books. It is by the main waiting room and, in normal times, it is open Mon to Saturday from 9am to 2pm, closed on bank holidays. All hours are subject to volunteer availability. Using our heritage buses, we usually run local free bus services on Boxing Day, plus park and ride services at a number of local shows. Our premises are home to around 16 of our own vehicles plus 11 privately owned guest vehicles. Not all of these are currently fit for the road. We work with groups which include Cumbria Omnibus Group, The 550 Group, Barrow Transport Group, Carlisle Bus Group, and a number of individual owners. We have two sites only one of which has a building – but we are working on curing this fault! We are grateful for the support of our members, and local businesses including Stagecoach North West and Northern Rail. We have volunteering opportunities in all aspects of restoring, maintaining and driving vehicles. Also in buildings and site maintenance, cataloguing & running our archive, producing educational materials, running trips and events, and fundraising.

We bring hoop to your events and parties, whether it be a hen party, or a black tie event. RoRo is a performer and a qualified teacher who has over 10 years teaching practise and a whole load of hoop experience. Originally self-taught, she now teaches at schools, circus schools, and conventions, as well as running weekly classes, and workshops. We travel often and have teachers all over the UK so no gig, workshop or class is too big or too small. We have esteemed performers nationwide who can provide entertainment and workshops for large-scale events with specialisms in hula hoop, fire, LED and aerial. Our School of Circus sessions provide workshop packages and sessions with an attention on being different from the norm, we have circus, dance, and a whole lot more. Many young people do not experience any aspect of circus as prop for performance or as a physical activity and it is our intention to address this whilst offering something different to the conventional norm. As a performer we show case single and multi hoop tricks, blending circus, dance, and a whole load of pizazz. These can be done according to theme, with other performers (hoop or other), or with LED. Party packages (popular for hen & birthday parties) give you the opportunity to learn and see some impressive stuff, where guests can be entertained, whilst learning and having fun. If you are looking for a new hobby, or are wanting to get serious in the world of hoop, you have come to the right place. It’s fitness, it’s circus, it’s dance, and so much more. Moreover, it is something you can practice pretty much anywhere. All you need is a hoop, a sprinkle of determination, and some space. All classes and workshops are taught by trained professionals, in a supportive and structured environment. We can teach online or in person. Our story starts in the classroom, but unlike most CPR training companies, it doesn't end there. Our co-founder, Roy Shaw, was a classroom CPR instructor for many years before our company was born in 2003. Roy knew what he was doing was ambitious, so rather than do it on his own, he partnered with Paul Martin and Scott Andersen to help in the early years. Our new team now included a paramedic / CPR instructor, a web developer / marketer, and a graphic designer / video editor. You wouldn't be alone if CPR training makes you think of classrooms and manikins rather than a computer. And in 2003, this was even more true than today. But that didn't stop us from deciding to change everything. After all, CPR training was broken and we were determined to fix it. No more falling asleep in a 4-6 hour class. Why not learn from the comfort of your home. GROWING PAINS AND EARLY WINS Of course, there have been challenges. Nearly a third of Internet users were on dial-up in 2003 and YouTube hadn't been invented yet. But by 2007, things were beginning to change. And that's the year we launched the Internet's first fully video-based CPR course. At this point, we had certified around 80,000 students, our three founders went full-time on the business, and we hired our first two employees to support our customers and gain compliance approvals. Compliance challenges are what led us to create a blended CPR program in 2008. Tai Chi Punch Although each style of Tai Chi Chuan has its peculiar features, the five styles of Tai Chi Chuan something in common, they are: With a calm mind the performer breathes naturally. In peace and ease the performer moves lightly, softly, slowly and equally. The performer moves harmoniously and in a balanced way. The performer moves like a circle–graceful and perfect. The motion is slow and steady and strong strength (yang) and weak strength (yin) can be used in motions mutually. Tai Chi Chuan has attracted attention internationally. It has special functions in promoting health and preventing illness. To help the performer to concentrate their mind and to make their motions coordinate with their breath, music can be played to accompany practice. Flow with the sound of the musical instruments. In following the rhythms of the music, practicing Tai Chi Chuan will relieve stress and benefit health. Crescent Kick (Shuang Pai Chiao) The name Tai Chi comes from the Taoist symbol the West calls yin (black) and yang (white). This Tai Chi symbol represents two balanced opposites: black and white, sky and earth, fire and water, masculine and feminine, moon and sun. Feminine is the black or yin. Masculine is light or yang. The yin side of Tai Chi is like yoga, moving meditation, or chi kung. The yang side is the martial art – the practical application of the movements – using your power. Most often the yang side of Tai Chi is not taught. The healing benefits without the martial application is the yin without the yang. Through the movements of Tai Chi, one can set the mind and body in balance. It is not easy to do. You want to make sure that for every movement in motion (yang) or at rest (yin) your body is moving together. Through Tai Chi training, you can learn more about yourself and you can feel calm and peaceful all the time. It is a kind of martial art, but it is a gentle martial art. It is not for attacking, but has powerful self-defense applications.

In 1859 Lord Palmerston instigated the Royal Commission on the Defence of the United Kingdom to review the nation’s defences. At the time there was a strong possibility of a French attack and the country’s existing defences were deemed obsolete. The report was published the following year with the recommendation of the construction of a series of forts to strengthen the defences around the country against landward attack. Over 80 forts were built with five being constructed in Medway to protect the Royal Dockyard, Royal Arsenal and the approach to London. Fort Luton was the smallest in the “Chatham Concrete Ring”. The five forts were Fort Borstal, Fort Bridgewoods, Fort Horsted, Fort Luton and Fort Darland. The design and placement of the forts were based on the needs and armament available in 1860, artillery range was three miles and with the site of the forts you could hold the enemy around five miles from the Dockyard at Chatham, an important feature of approach to London was the A2 which Rochester Bridge is part of and this had to be protected, if the enemy could use it they would have a direct route into London and if they destroyed the bridge they could delay our troops from hampering their invasion plans and forcing them to travel miles to cross the River Medway. Construction started on the Medway forts in the mid-1870s however funds became short and work stopped for some years, by the time work began again armament had so improved as to make the forts useless for the defence of the Royal Dockyard and Rochester Bridge, artillery fire was now travelling up to twelve miles. The design of the forts were changed many times reflecting on the improving armament, changing needs for defence and the new suggestion that fixed artillery forts were an unnecessary cost which field works could replace. Due to the constant improvements during this short period many features of Fort Luton were removed from plans including a main magazine, counterscarp galleries and a caponier. The size of Fort Luton was also reduced and a casemate was converted into the use of a magazine. None of the forts received their fixed gun emplacements but instead they were provided with secure bases around the ramparts, this allowed field guns to be wheeled into position when under attack but also removed if there was heavy bombardment. To protect the guns Fort Luton was provided with four gun shelters in which the artillery men could also retreat when in danger.
