We are a community interest company called Choose Nature CIC with our site being located adjacent to the Wheal Martyn Clay Works, Carthew, mid-Cornwall. We aim to broaden the accessibility and inclusivity of outdoor learning opportunities and therapeutic support in nature. Mission statement: ‘Choose Nature CIC works to increase the wellbeing of individuals, communities and the environment by inspiring life long learning and care. Our calm enriching outdoor spaces are emotionally grounding and cultivate a strong relationship with nature’. We are continuing to restore and develop the site. It has so many exciting areas including gardening spaces, wooded areas, wildlife ponds, orchard, classroom, and poly tunnels. We currently have our weekly ‘Mamas in Nature’ group (supporting new mums and babies as transition into parenthood), ‘Making Tracks’ group (supporting young people with additional needs) and different volunteering opportunities as we establish a volunteer programme. Learning Trios take place on Wednesday and Friday – if you need to change your appointment, please call the school office to do so. We will be discussing previous targets and setting new targets. Gentle reminder that each appointment is 15 minutes. Homework (only reading this week!) Reading: Children will bring their book in their book bag and the pages to be read will be written in their green reading record. Please sign this to evidence reading has been completed. Some children will come home with a little slip of green words, these words should be learned to support their progress in reading. P.E – Wednesday with Miss Simpson and Thursday with Mrs Lynch. Lots of children still don’t have a P.E. kit, it is so important all children bring a P.E. kit for these times. The children will be a lot more comfortable for their lesson and they are learning to dress themselves independently. Maths/Numeracy: We are learning ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd etc) and making amounts up to 10p, using 1p, 2p and 5p coins. Literacy: We have finished learning all of our P1 sounds and we are now working on writing sentences independently. Topic: We have been learning about the seasons, especially Winter, and we are going to start our new topic ‘Weather’. *We would like to make a P1 Family wall display in the classroom. The local context (a small industrial town in rural northern Cumbria) is, perhaps, not one you might associate with academic excellence and yet we were the first secondary school in the county to have been judged “outstanding” by Ofsted under their revised framework. You will probably want to see for yourself what we have to offer and, to this end, I would be delighted to show you around. Emotional Intelligence – Plus (EQ+) I have always been a firm believer in the promotion of so-called ‘soft skills’, in Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and in improving the ability of pupils to interact effectively with others in different contexts. Many pupils suffer when they find themselves in a different social context (e.g. a discussion with an adult, a classroom presentation etc.) and find it hard to adapt. So, a few years ago, as part of the School Development Plan, we promoted this across the school through normal lessons and Form Periods to help pupils recognise its importance, and encouraged pupil progress in eight key areas, using where possible pupil role-models as teachers. These days, we regularly revisit EQ, albeit informally, encouraging pupils to be ‘EQ-competent’ and ‘interview ready’. And more recently, we have also embarked on a related project with an external company keen to promote Oracy Skills. Initially, we focussed on the whole of Year 8; latterly, we have adapted the programme to target around 100 pupils (from Year 7 to Year 12) who we believe might benefit more than others from this kind of intervention.
