Our one-day workshop aims to provide healthcare professionals with evidence-based knowledge to develop their theoretical and practical understanding of the importance of early communication between parents and infants. We also consider how to support parents’ bond with their babies when suffering with poor mental health. We explore how early experiences impact the child/parent relationship and how this influences brain development and the trajectory of infant mental health. We examine different types of crying and recognise the emotional impact this has on both the baby and carer and how participants can support parents in reading their baby’s behaviour and regulating their states. The workshop will also look at babies’ rapidly evolving sleep patterns and sleep cues and how staff can offer anticipatory advice to parents to encourage early good sleep habits. Workshop Aims To provide community staff with up-to-date evidence-based knowledge to develop an understanding of infant mental health, brain development and the importance of how early experiences impact on child/adult relationships. For professionals to develop an understanding of what babies are trying to say; to enable them to support parents in gaining confidence with tuning into and regulating their babies. To understand the evolving sleep patterns of babies up to a year old and how parents can support their baby to encourage early good sleep habits. Enable parents to respond to their baby’s cues in a sensitive, timely manner so the baby feels safe secure and loved; this is particularly important for parents who are struggling to bond with their baby, possibly as a result of postnatal depression or having experienced adverse childhood experiences themselves.

This highly interactive training offers strategies for navigating behaviour challenges with learners of all ages, in any environment. Using case studies and examples from your setting we begin the workshop highlighting the key concepts of applied behaviour analysis, helping you to understand why challenging behaviours occur. We discuss the importance of designing supportive learning environments based upon the Pyramid Approach to Education framework. The next step in the workshop is to define behaviours which require intervention and establish the function of these behaviours. These skills are put into practice using our own case studies and furthermore applying this to your own learners. The second half of the workshop addresses strategies which can be used proactively and reactively to decrease the challenging behaviours which you see in your setting. As we investigate each strategy to replace or reduce a behaviour you will have the opportunity to assess if that strategy will be suitable for your learner and identify the next steps to take when you return to your setting. With the current influx of communication devices and apps to the market how do we ensure that basic functional communication skills are maintained and taught right from the beginning? Speech Generating Devices (SGDs) were first introduced for people with motor difficulties like cerebral palsy and now these devices are being introduced to our learners with autism and other related communication difficulties. for these populations, language and cognition are often compromised and basic social and communication skills have not always been mastered prior to the introduction of a device. Because of this, the way we teach the use of SGDs needs to be specifically tailored to fit the needs of each individual paying attention to devices capabilities vs. user capabilities. This full-day workshop will describe procedures for analysing a learner's current PECS skills to determine candidacy for transitioning to a Speech Generating Device (SGD), choosing a device, and teaching functional use of the device, and why we must teach the basic principles of communication to our learner first to ensure positive outcomes are achieved. *Participants should bring a Speech Generating Device (SGD) to the training for use during a variety of activities.
