Join us for an insightful training session led by Mark Arnold from Urban Saints. The aim of Additional Needs Ministry is to encourage, enable and equip children's, youth and families' workers to reach, include, create belonging for, and disciple all children and young people, especially those with additional needs or disabilities. As part of Urban Saints' mission to provide young people with opportunities to grow in their Christian faith, Mark is dedicated to ensuring that children and young people with additional needs are fully included in their strategy. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn how to better support and include all young people in our ministries. Key Information: This training will be taking place in person, at Christchurch Bedford. The training itself takes 2.5 hours, starting at 18:45. There is an option to join for a meal from 18:00 prior to the training. The training will end around 21:15.

Level 1 Workshop (F2F) The Level 1 Workshop is the starting point for your Makaton journey. It is recommended for people who need to use Makaton at home and in their work, to develop the communication skills of others. Content Level 1 training provides a practical introduction to the Makaton Language Programme and a wider understanding of learning and communication difficulties. The Level 1 Workshop include how to start using Makaton in everyday situations; immediate needs, home, familiar people, food, events, activities and objects. You will also discover hints and tips for effective signing and symbol use to maximise communication. Accessibility Please indicate if you have any challenges or additional needs, so reasonable adjustments can be made to support your learning and participation. Entry criteria There is no entry criteria for this Workshop Study materials You will receive a Participant's Manual, which includes the Makaton symbols and signs that you learn in the workshop. You will also be given a certificate of attendance. Please remember to keep your Level 1 training certificate in case you want to attend further Makaton training. After the workshop After completing Level 1 training you can continue on your Makaton journey by attending Level 2 training. Instructions This is a Level 1 course. The venue is easily accessible by public transport: close to Wimbledon mainline and District line. Also within reach from South Wimbledon Northern Line tube. Level 1 & 2 Combined Workshop (F2F) Level 1 Workshop is the starting point for your Makaton journey, with Level 2 building on the knowledge you gained in Level 1. It is recommended for people who need to use Makaton at home and in their work, to develop the communication skills of others. Content Level 1 & 2 training provides a practical introduction to the Makaton Language Programme and a wider understanding of learning and communication difficulties. Safeguarding (F2F) The Makaton Safeguarding workshop is designed to support professionals and carers of children and adults with severe communication and learning disabilities. The workshop builds on existing knowledge of signs and symbols from Level 1 and 2 training, and provides instruction for extra signs and symbols specific to safeguarding situations. Participants are invited to consider differing protocols and practice. The workshop will enable participants to consider how the vocabulary may be safely applied to promote communication for people who use Makaton within a range of levels and contexts. Content This unique workshop provides signs and symbols for a range of vocabulary covering a number of topics: People: family, relationships and people around us Body parts and clothes Places Feelings: feelings, thoughts and behaviours (including bullying and abuse) Sexual behaviour By the end of the workshop you will be able to: Develop a ‘Safeguarding through Makaton’ plan for implementation in your own setting. Demonstrate an understanding of the range of people Makaton users could come into contact with at different ages and stages in their lives; Demonstrate how Makaton can be personalised and used at different levels of complexity to meet individual needs; Identify vocabulary required by a Makaton user and be able to apply the principles of this analysis to the user’s own setting; Demonstrate an understanding of the difference between comments and questions, and an appreciation of how to maintain an interaction with a Makaton user; Describe strategies or methods appropriate to use with a Makaton user to help them understand and use vocabulary or concepts; Duration The Makaton Safeguarding Workshop is made up of 13 learning hours, and is commonly delivered over 2 full days. Alternatively, the Workshop comprises of 4 modules and can be delivered flexibly over a number of weeks to suit participant’s needs. Level 3 Workshop (F2F) Level 3 training is an advanced level of Makaton training and will help you to improve and develop your signing and symbol skills and how to use them effectively every day. Content Level 3 training provides a practical learning session on how apply the Makaton Language Programme. The Level 3 Workshop will start with a refresher on the signs previous taught in Levels 1 and 2, building on topics such as; people, activities, events and objects. New vocabulary will also be introduced which are ideal for personal development; feelings, interests, community and, thinking and knowing. You will begin to learn more abstract concepts such as propositions. Duration Face to face workshops comprise of a minimum of six and a half learning hours. Workshops generally will take place over a full day of training. Deliver method: Venue based Accessibility Please indicate if you have any challenges or additional needs, so reasonable adjustments can be made to support your learning and participation. Building Confidence, Self Worth & Friendships Making Tracks is for children with additional needs and their families, allowing them access to an inclusive and sensory rich environment. Developing confidence and self esteem, motivation to learn and improving self worth. This group is based around the children and their needs. Our highly skilled staff work with children and their families, to encourage growth in a supportive and nurturing environment. Activities include outdoor play and learner led activities such as den building, campfire cooking and exploration. How To Access Our Alternative Schooling Sessions Making Tracks, our alternative schooling sessions, are open to all children of school age and currently takes place on a Tuesday during term time from  Group One 10am - 12pm Group Two 1pm - 3pm. In line with forest school objectives, we strive to use their Badger Forest School experience to help children overcome their previous experiences and become positive and pro-active learners.  As an organisation with trauma-informed status, our Nurture Programme is specifically designed to support emotional wellbeing as we believe this best supports a child’s development and aids their return to a school setting on a full-time basis. Children are assisted to understand their emotions, their triggers and their behaviours, so that they can learn self-regulation and management techniques. They build trusted relationships with staff which enables therapeutic conversations to happen. The outdoors environment and associated skills building offers children the opportunity to succeed which helps develop confidence, self-esteem and identity. All-weather outdoor learning generates motivation and resilience, as well as helps relieve passivity, stress and anxiety.  In terms of academic learning, sessions deliver a wide range of activities designed to develop the child’s concentration, practical skills, fine and gross motor development, problem solving, language and communication skills, and expand their understanding of the natural world. Activities might include:  Shelter building Fire lighting and cooking on an open fire Tool use Studying wildlife Rope and string work Art and sculpture work Sensory activities Developing and discussing stories Creating and completing obstacle courses Activities frequently incorporate opportunities for working on literacy or numeracy skills, and additionally, we can work towards including some elements of the National Curriculum if this is a priority for the client, as many of our staff are teacher trained or have experience working in schools.
