What is a BFA Certified Focusing Skills Course?
The British Focusing Association (BFA) provides Certified Focusing skills courses to give people a foundation in Focusing which will help to:
Listen to yourself in a Focusing way
Listen to others in a Focusing way
Bring Focusing into your everyday life
Have a Focusing partnership (a peer Focusing/listening exchange)

The BFA Certified Focusing Skills Course is a prerequisite to further professional training as a BFA-recognised Focusing Practitioner or Teacher. More info on BFA professional training here
Inner Focus' Course Description
This 60 hour course which will take place over 5 weekends in Long Stratton Norfolk is designed specifically for qualified and trainee counsellors/ psychotherapists who are registered with a professional body such as BACP or UKCP. 

No previous experience of Focusing is required. 

Focusing grew out of the extensive research of Eugene Gendlin and Carl Rogers in the 1950s. Their five-year research project in Person-Centred Therapy found that it wasn’t what the counsellor did in a session that created a successful therapy outcome (providing they were able to offer the basic core conditions), but rather what the client did. These clients who had a successful therapy outcome did something in sessions that Gendlin later termed ‘Focusing’ (getting in touch with what Gendlin termed a ‘Felt Sense’). Following the end of their research project Rogers went on to work with groups, whereas Gendlin advanced their research findings, developing Focusing as a guided self-help process (which could be used outside of therapy), and Focusing-Oriented Psychotherapy (which emphasised enabling clients to connect with the all-important Felt Sense in therapy sessions).

The course provides an in-depth experiential exploration of Focusing beginning with Gendlin’s original formulation of it as an embodied process to express the ‘Felt Sense’ of a situation, and progresses on to contemporary creative approaches to Focusing such as art, movement, sand tray and body mapping. 

Each weekend will provide the opportunity for participants to explore and connect deeply with their own Felt Sense and the ‘parts of self’ that are often discovered within a Felt Sense (eg. inner critic, inner child, protector, and others) whilst developing the skills necessary to facilitate the unfolding of a Felt Sense and parts of self in others. 

This structured experiential approach is designed to gradually build the knowledge and skills necessary for counsellors/ psychotherapists to begin to integrate Focusing into their therapeutic work with clients, with plenty of opportunities for personal growth, experiential learning, discussion, and feedback.

A Unique Experience
Inner Focus' BFA Certified Focusing Skills course has the unique advantage of being in-person with a very small cohort of counsellors/ psychotherapists. This means that participants have the opportunity to ask questions and deeply explore and experience Focusing in a safe, confidential, warm environment in a way that is not possible with online courses. Participants get plenty of time, feedback and support from the course facilitator.

Assessment: 
Full attendance on the course
Active participation in experiential exercises and triad work
Demonstration of integration of knowledge and the application of Focusing skills as the course progresses
Observed and assessed Focusing session on the final weekend

Certification: 
Upon completion of the course participants will receive a Certificate in Focusing Skills from the British Focusing Association (BFA) and a certificate of completion from Inner Focus Limited. CPD hours: 60

Course Facilitator: Sara Bradly
Sara is a qualified Focusing-Oriented Therapist and Person-Centred Counsellor. She is a Focusing Trainer, a Children’s Focusing Trainer, and a Coordinator in Training (CiT) with The International Focusing Institute, New York (TIFI) and is a recognised Focusing Teacher with the British Focusing Association. She is the director of Inner Focus Limited and provides Focusing-Oriented Therapy to adults and children as well as delivering trainings and workshops in Focusing to organisations and individuals. Sara has presented Focusing at the BACP CYP/F Conference in London 2020, and is the author of a chapter on Focusing with Children in 'Senses of Focusing', Volume 1, edited by Judy Moore and Nikolaos Kypriotakis (Eurasia Publications, Athens, 2021).

What to Expect
Raku Firing: Explore this traditional Japanese technique known for its captivating effects. Learn the low-temperature, fast-firing process, involving removing pottery at bright red heat and placing it in containers with combustible materials to achieve unique results.
Saggar Firing:  Saggar firing is a technique where ceramic pieces are enclosed in a container (the saggar) filled with combustible materials to create unique surface effects through smoke, fuming, and localized reduction.
Barrel Firing: Experience wood firing in a steel barrel using oxides, carbonates, and copper wire to create vibrant colors.
 Copper Matte/Copper Wash Technique is a decorative pottery method that uses copper oxide or carbonate to create unique metallic or iridescent effects.
Horsehair Firing: Add unique effects to your pottery using horsehair applied to the surface.
COURSE HIGHLIGHTS

Hands on Experience: Learn how to work with gas-fired raku kilns, 'mummy' saggars, and barrel kilns.  While you won’t be removing 1000°C pots from the kilns yourself—for safety and insurance reasons—you’ll be guided through the full process, gaining insight into the techniques, tools, and timing involved. Our demonstrations are detailed and designed to build your understanding and confidence, so you can safely explore these methods further in your own practice. You’ll be actively participating in the firing process—adding sawdust to glowing pots, witnessing the effects of reduction, and engaging closely with flame and smoke. This is a thrilling part of the experience, and proper safety gear (such as gloves and masks) is recommended.

Techniques and Skills:- Learn alternative pot preparation techniques, resist techniques, copper wash application, sacrificial glaze (naked raku), reduction glazes, and burnishing advice.

Expert Guidance: Benefit from the expertise of two experienced instructors, ensuring personalized help and advice throughout the course.

Materials: Optionally, bisque fired pots are available for £10 each, or you can bring your own masterpieces, guidance on preparation will be supplied at time of booking.

My second time doing this workshop. Not that I didn’t learn anything two years ago, it was just that it was so good the first time I was determined to return and introduce a friend of mine who was just beginning her pottery “adventure”. I can only say it was even better the second time around - and on top of everything we were blessed with lovely weather.

Abi and Alison are not only knowledgable and experienced in their craft but are friendly and patient and always engaging. They had made strenuous efforts to keep everybody safe in these strange viral times and to put everybody at ease.
The whole two days were a joy. Exciting, and inspirational. It’s given me so much more confidence now, to improve on the techniques and skills learned and to advance with a raku kiln of my own. I cannot recommend the experience too highly. 
No doubt I will be back for another ‘booster’ session in the not too distant future. It’s worth it for the food alone!

Please do not send along staff who have just worked a nightshift or who will be visiting clients immediately before or immediately after a training session. People arriving tired, stressed or late cannot gain the most benefit from a training course. We reserve the right to turn away individuals too exhausted to focus on the training or staff who turn up late for a course and disturb the flow of the proceedings.

Cancellations
CH Care Training operates a sliding scale of cancellation; If you cancel more than two weeks before the start date of a course, you can ask for a full refund, to change the names of the delegates being sent along, or to transfer a delegate to another training date. If you give less than two weeks but more than one week's notice of cancellation, 50 percent of the booking can be refunded. If you cancel less than a week from the training delivery date we wont be able to refund. There are no refunds for staff who do not turn up on the day of the training course.
If CH Care Training needs to change the date or cancel a course for any reason we will give you the maximum notice we can. In exceptional circumstances we may cancel a course due to extreme weather or circumstances at the training venue. You will be offered a full refund or the opportunity to transfer your booking to an alternative date.

Arriving at the Venue
The course will start promptly so please arrive at least 15 minutes before the start time of the training to allow plenty of time to use the toilet, and be seated ready for the start of the course.
You can call Training direct on 0798 999 5180 if you are struggling to arrive on time. Please note that the meeting will be locked to late arrivals 10 minutes after the actual course starts.
When you arrive please come into Reception and a member of staff will come to book you in prior to directing you to the training room. This room is located on the ground floor and is wheelchair accessible.

During the course
As this is a working environment please ensure you allow the necessary time and focus to get the best from the material being presented. Please bring pen and paper to make notes during the course. Our training sessions are fun and very interactive. We will encourage plenty of comments, points of view and the sharing of lived experiences. Delegates should not share any sensitive information about a client or organisation. Our session agreement asks delegates to maintain confidentiality about individuals and organisations and to respect the views of others on the course.
All CH Care Training courses are inclusive, but if you have any concerns about your ability to participate, such as sensory or learning differences then please let the Trainer know in confidence before the start of a course, so that they may make the appropriate adjustments.

Master plant tinctures are sacred, natural extracts derived from powerful Amazonian plants, each carrying unique healing properties. 

Used traditionally in shamanic practices, these tinctures provide a gentle, yet profound way to heal, release emotional blockages, and restore physical vitality. 

Instructions:
1. Dosage & Absorption
Empty Stomach for Optimal Absorption: Take your tincture on an empty stomach, ideally at least 30 minutes before eating or 2 hours after your last meal. This enhances absorption and allows the plant’s energy to work more directly. You may want to start with a 5 drops a day working up depending on your sensitivity (up to a maximum of 20 drops per day) 
Sublingual Method (Under the Tongue): Place the recommended number of drops directly under your tongue and hold them there for about 1-2 minutes before swallowing. This method allows the plant’s essence to enter your bloodstream more quickly and efficiently.
Swallowing & Following with Water: If needed, you can follow with a sip of water or herbal tea, but avoid strong flavours that might interfere with the plant’s subtle energy.
2. Dietary Considerations
Avoid heavy, overly processed, or highly stimulating foods (e.g., caffeine, sugar, alcohol, or spicy foods) before and after taking the tincture, as they may interfere with the plant’s effects.
Simple, grounding meals such as lightly cooked vegetables, whole grains, and herbal teas, support a clearer connection to the plant.

Daisy is definitely interested in literary speculative fiction, though not generally looking for hard SFF. Across the board, she is always looking for stories that explore sexuality, race, gender, and disability, and would particularly love to hear from writers whose voices and experiences aren’t given enough space in publishing.

On the non-fiction side, Daisy is looking for bold new insights and underrepresented voices on popular science, nature writing, relationships, social issues and politics, and am always especially interested in fresh, playful and exciting writing on pop culture, love and the internet. She’d also love to see illuminating narrative non-fiction, whether a beautiful and lyrical exploration, or an enthralling and explosive deep-dive.

LOOKING FOR: ADULT FICTION, NON-FICTION

Una is a Rights Agent at Susanna Lea Associates and am starting to build a client list. 

She grew up in London and graduated from the University of Cambridge with a BA in English in 2021. At university, Una was particularly interested in contemporary West African and South Asian literature. She started as an agent's assistant at SLA London in 2022 and now handles some translation rights and provides support with editorial work and submissions.

Una's favourite reads always set her at ease right away and draws her in with impressive and accessible storytelling, memorable characters or an original hook. Una enjoys writing which expands her worldview, makes her laugh out loud or keeps her on her toes with its twists and turns. She welcomes submissions from debut authors and would be keen to read across a wide range of genres and styles.

She is looking for literary, upmarket and book club fiction, and is always drawn to stories that explores the challenges and complexities of love and relationships in all its forms —within families, between friends or in romantic relationships. Una loves the way in which familial relationships are dissected in The Wren, The Wren by Anne Enright and the impact of the local community in Small Worlds by Caleb Azumah Nelson. She is always drawn to novels with a strong sense of community, whether they are unified by geography, culture, or in other unexpected ways.

Una has always loved reading international and translated fiction and welcomes submissions from authors writing contemporary fiction that engages with cultures and traditions from around the world, such as in voices of the deities in Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi or the subversive tales of Sayaka Murata. 

She is not looking for children’s or YA titles, science fiction or high-concept fantasy, but is open to submissions from authors writing in the speculative fiction space, and books with fantastical or otherworldly elements, be that magical realism or supernatural horror, such as Mona Awad's campus novel with a twist, Bunny. Una would also love to read more writing that engages with the natural world and reminds us of the limitations of human understanding.

In non-fiction, Una enjoys books that furthers her understanding of wider societal issues — nature and the environment, culture, and little-known history. Her recent non-fiction favourites are Eve by Cat Bohannon, Doppelgänger by Naomi Klein and Unearthed by Claire Ratinon.
