DATE: 31st January TIME: 4pm LOCATION: Studio A Our Greta Gerwig season continues with this adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's classic, Little Women. Set in 1860s Massachusetts, the film follows the story of the four March sisters, young ladies coming into their adulthood whilst dealing with familial poverty and their place in a patriarchal landscape. Featuring an all-star cast including Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Emma Watson, Laura Dern, Timothee Chalamet, Meryl Streep and Bob Odenkirk, the sophomore release of Gerwig's filmography will make you laugh, cry and punch the air with excitement.
Come and join Janine at Stitching Kitchen for a one day quilt top course learning how to make a disappearing nine patch quilt. This workshop will take place over one full day. It is suitable for total novices, taking you through everything you need to know to build confidence in quilt-making. If you are a more experienced quilter, you will enjoy learning a new technique that has so many creative possiblities, and you can benefit from Janine’s years of experience to pick up tips and tricks for a professional, polished quilt. Your tutor Janine also holds monthly long-arm clinics at Stitching Kitchen that you'd be welcome to drop into if you'd like any further pointers, or would like to outsource the quilt finishing to her! What you will learn/achieve 1. Understanding the Nine Patch Block Structure You will learn how to create a traditional 3x3 Nine Patch quilt block, focusing on color placement and fabric contrast to maximize visual interest after the transformation. 2. Cutting and Rearranging Techniques You will then practice the “disappearing” technique: cutting the finished Nine Patch into quarters and rearranging the sections to create a new, more complex-looking block. 3. Design Variations and Layout Possibilities Janine will encourage you to explore different layout options using the same block pieces, discovering how rotating and rearranging the quarter blocks can produce unique quilt top designs. 4. Precision Sewing and Pressing for Accurate Blocks The workshop will emphasise best practices for accurate piecing and pressing, which are crucial for achieving clean lines and proper alignment after cutting and reassembling the blocks. What's included Tuition: full instruction and support in a small class. Written instructions that you can take away and refer back to at home. Use of all the tools you will need during the workshop. Use of the Pfaff and Janome sewing machines in Stitching Kitchen's fully equipped studio. Tea and cake. What to bring Fabrics to make your disappearing nine patch blocks. We will send you a materials list, but just give us a call or drop in to the studio if you would like further advice, and we can also make suggestions about where to purchase quilting fabric. Stitching Kitchen has thread available to purchase. You won’t need to bring anything else and you can leave your sewing machine at home. Stitching Kitchen is fully equipped with Pfaff and Janome sewing machines and all the quilting tools and sewing kit for use during the workshop. We will stop for 30 minutes for lunch, do bring a packed lunch along. Stitching Kitchen also stocks a full range of haberdashery, batting and quilting tools if you discover anything you would like to purchase to use at home. Please note that this workshop is held in our light and spacious first floor studio at Stitching Kitchen, which is accessible by stairs. DATE: Tuesday 11th June TIME: 4pm LOCATION: Studio A Join us for a frank and informative discussion on mental health, how best to maintain and support yourself and others during times of stress and anxiety. Hosted by our very own school counsellor, Alice Coyle, this session will be a great way for you learn new key skills that will develop your own mental health and help you cope with everyday stress, both from personal circumstances and school assessments. We hope to see you all there!
Each session will be 90 minutes long In our Mummy Morning it will be very easy going with an option to take part in gentle core exercises to slowly strengthen our core and pelvic floors which is vital after birth, but not only that, we work on the whole of our bodies. Our bodies go through so much from carrying our little ones but the process during and after impacts our precious bodies, so we need to look after them. Mind, body and soul :)
Date: Monday 27th November Location: Studio A Time: 4pm Writer turned director Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, First Reformed) created a unique, avant-garde biopic about notorious Japanese author Yukio Mishima, who embraced Japan's traditions and fought against the gradual westernisation that became common following the end of World War Two. Using adaptations of sections of his novels, as well as traditional recounting of real-life events, this film sticks out as one of Schrader's best, and continues to inspire awe and heated discussion years later.
Date: 24th October 2023 Time: 4pm Location: Studio A Sorcha Kurien-Walsh, a former pupil at Central Film School, has kindly agreed to join us to discuss her career as a TV screenwriter and her work on the upcoming comedy series Rivals, set to star David Tennant and Danny Dyer and release on Disney+ next year. Additionally, she will speak about her BBC Studios short film 'The Pink Pill', and answer any questions students may have about working as a screenwriter in the TV industry. Make sure to come along and bring questions to ask her!
DATE: Thursday 11th July TIME: 4pm LOCATION: Studio A Chris Jones is one of the lead organisers of the London Screenwriting Festival, and also recently served as Splinter Unit Director of Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One. He will be discussing both how students can navigate film festivals and make their work stand out, and also his experiences working in a position of creative control on a large-scale blockbuster film. Be sure to book your tickets in advance for this event.

If you have any interest in animation, directing, screenwriting or just what you can expect after graduation, these are the perfect guests to come along and meet. Date: 12th March 2024 Time: 4pm Location: Studio A Acclaimed actress Ruth Negga will be joining us in a Professional Perspectives session next month, discussing her career, experiences working with many famous directors (Neil Jordan, Jeff Nichols, James Gray & Duncan Jones amongst others) as well as on TV shows such as Preacher, Misfits and Agents of SHIELD.
