Thank you for your interest. Emma's Background Feeling deep appreciation for my early life, growing up in a super abundant garden, bursting with wondrous flowers and bountiful blossoms. Learning from a young age how to meet with nature in her fullness of spirit. Family life was coloured with complexity, tragedy and challenge.  I found great solace within the wholeness of garden space, which heightened my awareness of our deeply interconnected, cyclical nature. Our bohemian home was full of floral interiors, antiques, un-conventional ornaments and myriad curiosities.  Many of which continue to inspire and adorn my mosaic art today. In my early twenties I began exploring the process of making sculptural ceramics for many years at a local art school.  During that time I was invited to join a weekend course making mosaics.   I loved the idea of working in instant colour and form. I meandered with mosaic process and fell in love! I later became artist in residence at a local historical house and spiritual centre, which offered courses, retreats and B&B.  People visited from all over the country and around the world, which enabled me to meet and explore with many colourful seekers.  My studio was the ground floor of a small 17th Century listed cottage in the grounds of the center. The cottage looked out onto a wonderful walled garden, which I helped to care for, harvesting inspiration for my art.  Inspiration I appreciate the beauty and generosity of our natural world.  Offering an authentic, curative ground of endless wonderment and creativity.  My garden is a great source of delight and inspiration.  Teeming with every colour and tone, heartening aromas and kindred vibrations.  I’m passionate about vintage china.  I love how it offers endless possibility of pattern, hue, myriad tender tones and expressive textures.  Inspiring a deep sense of memory and creative potentiality within.  The fragments have a fine body and reliable quality, which allows for clean, strong cuts. I find this material very pleasing to create with. The whole process of making mosaics is a miraculous quest of gathering together diverse materials, from house clearances to charity & curiosity shops, enabling an endless enchanted flow of abundant potentiality and great fun!  I’m always in deepest appreciation for unique donated gifts of broken antiques, vintage wonders, figurines, vases and re-claimed stained glass.  Technique My studio is abounding with many colour-coded palettes, brimming with vintage china treasures, enabling me to be in spontaneous mosaic flow with ease of application. I spend quiet time, musing with mosaic movement.  Creating space for day dreaming, wondering and glimpsing potentiality. I appreciate my precious tools.  Various hand cutters and nippers of many shapes and sizes.  Remarkable, reliable, dear old friends. As I begin making mosaics I often just sit and start loosely nipping and cutting.  Feeling into and aligning myself with little sparks of inspiration.  Gently shaping each piece, miracles begin transpiring through mosaic metamorphosis. I use various cement-based adhesives and PVA glues for fixing the fragments to the different surfaces.   I often use natural pigments to colour the final grout application, which creates depth and helps to unify the whole piece. Goal My intention is to encourage harmony to emerge from diverse and discarded materials. Ok, ok it wasn’t quite that simple! The thing is, I was lacking connection to myself, connecting with the wrong people to fit in, holding onto the past, people pleasing, exhausted and stressed- sound familiar? I was holding all my emotions in and not facing them- healing happens by feeling. Yes it’s uncomfortable but oh so worth it! I’m a big believer in this -you are never too old or too young to start something! Never too young to start educating around emotional wellbeing and never too old to make changes to your life or start over! What you waiting for? There is so much beauty already within you and all around you, many opportunities and abundance. We all have an innate inner wisdom that is conditioned out of us- we help you to reignite your inner magic, regain trust in your intuition firstly by reconnecting to yourself, then to nature and others. Academic Staff Our inspiring team of teachers works closely with our Director of Curriculum to provide the highest quality subject courses. Many of our teachers are working or studying at high-level academic institutions such as Cambridge, Oxford or London universities. They usually are Fellows, Professors, researchers or postgraduates and specialists in their field. Here at Reach, our teachers have significant autonomy in creating their courses so that they can utilise their expertise fully. Supervisory Staff Reach Cambridge supervisors live on-site alongside the students and are available 24 hours a day. Many of our supervisors are current undergraduates and are the students’ first point of contact to attend to their questions or concerns. Supervisors run an amazing schedule of daily activities and take part in weekend excursions with the whole community of students. They also look after a dedicated small group of students who live in the accommodation with them. A look inside – Our Academic Courses Accreditation Reach Cambridge is proudly accredited by the British Accreditation Council (BAC) for Independent Further and Higher Education as a Short Course Provider. This is an extract from our most recent interim report – “The senior leadership team is cohesive, collaborative and responsive. Teaching and learning are of a high quality, using highly qualified, experienced and engaging teachers. Programmes are well-designed to offer participants a well-rounded mix of academic and personal development opportunities. Programmes are designed to enable participants to benefit from the wider learning and development that arises from mixing with participants across a wide range of ages and cultures.” Education experts from the BAC inspectorate assessed the institution against our standards during a formal inspection visit. The Inspection team wrote a report for the independent Accreditation Committee who subsequently awarded accreditation, which is valid for four years. The inspection report is available in the Directory and Inspection Reports section on the BAC website, where you can read more about the BAC. Cambridge Cambridge is a prestigious centre of academia and a beautiful place to live and study. The world-famous University of Cambridge is over 800 years old, and has been home to some of the most respected authors, scientists, thinkers, and even royalty. The city boasts some of the country’s finest architecture, art galleries and museums, as well as a vibrant theatre scene. Running through it is the River Cam: colleges glimpsed from the banks of the Backs, students punting along the water, and rowers practicing at high speed, are all part of the Cambridge experience. A Brief History of Cambridge Before the University The Romans were first to build a town in Cambridge, although archaeologists have found evidence of habitation as far back as 1500BC. It was a convenient crossing point for the River Granta now known as the River Cam. Throughout Anglo-Saxon and Norman times, settlements tended to centre on what is now known as Castle Hill‚ for its fortification potential. William the Conqueror was the first to build a castle on the hill and his son, Henry 1st, gave the town its first charter. The oldest structure in Cambridge, St Bene’t’s Church, dates from the 11th Century. The University It was in 1209 that scholars, taking refuge from hostile townsmen in Oxford, settled in Cambridge. Students soon flocked to Cambridge, although in its early years, these were largely clerks or clergymen in holy orders of some sort. It was not until 1284 that the first Cambridge College (of which there are now 31), Peterhouse, was founded. Colleges sprang up in the centuries to follow‚ the result of benefactions from donors including King Henry VIII. The most famous structure in Cambridge – King’s College Chapel – was built by a succession of Kings, starting with Henry VI in 1446 and finishing with Henry VIII in 1515. Cambridge is the top-ranked University in the UK and has produced 118 Nobel laureates and 15 British Prime Ministers. Famous Scholars In 1627, a clergyman by the name of John Harvard entered Cambridge, before emigrating to America in 1638 and founding Harvard University. Numerous other influential scholars have passed through Cambridge: Sir Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Lord Byron and Lord Tennyson, several signatories of the American Declaration of Independence, Bertrand Russell, Ludwig Wittgenstein, F.R. Farmer Gow's is registered with the Oxfordshire Work Experience Scheme. The farm offers various work experience opportunities, depending on the age of the student. The details below are not exhaustive – and with up to 20 changes to the farm routine each and every day, throughout the year - students first and foremost need to understand and appreciate the very unique work experience opportunities which we provide. Students are interviewed prior to placements being offered. What's involved? Work Experience is expensive to provide - we therefore expect a huge commitment from students to achieve as near as possible balance between the learning opportunities provided and the work a student performs. If you want to work with animals, the very first thing you need to understand and accept is that they need 24 hour/365 day a year care – so you need to be committed. We don’t keep students who can’t make a regular commitment. Farmer Gow's is a private company providing public access to farming and the countryside. Our doors are open to the public for 358 days of the year - we therefore need to ensure that you work carefully and safely - with both our animals and our visitors. We will teach you to ~ listen carefully to instructions follow those instructions and provide feedback to senior staff on all elements of the task in hand We will encourage you to ask questions – but also to make notes so that your questions come after a period of training, rather than constantly interrupting the training. We will supervise you thoroughly until we are sure you can follow instructions correctly and accurately. As your confidence grows and your ability to correctly perform tasks improves we will start to 'step back' and allow you to grow in the level of responsibility we give you. We will challenge you - and if you work hard and listen carefully - you will have a fantastic time. You will learn loads and loads and loads. You will meet many new people and learn to talk to them, work with them, and ask them for help. And that's just in your first few weeks... Age 14-16 years ~ Key Stage 4 We offer a 2-week work experience for students in years 10 and 11. Students should apply by email, with brief details of their interests. Every applicant is invited to spend a 1/2 day on the farm, to assess their suitability for a placement. A placement is confirmed after the introduction day, by email. Age 16-19 years ~ Key Stage 5 Students may apply for a work experience placement from age 15 years and thereby start at 16 years of age. The farm provides ~ 'hands on' practical and technical training to students interested in veterinary and animal careers contacts for further work experience opportunities with local farmers, businesses and government departments involved in the agricultural industry opportunities for paid work once a basic level of competence is achieved opportunities for paid work during school/college/university holidays Depending on the background of the student we would normally expect ~ From age 15 years ~ Year 1 at Farmer Gow's January-March application to join the work experience programme. Student invited to spend a ½ day on the farm, working alongside an existing student, followed by a short interview with a senior member of staff. September ~ following a successful visit and interview, student begins a one-day per week work experience. Introduction to the farm's routines, learning about everyday feeding, watering, hygiene procedures, routine tasks, preparation of feeds for hand reared lambs and kids. You will assist with twice daily 'Meet the Animals' sessions. Mandatory – February ½ term holiday - a week’s work experience, either Sunday-Thursday or Tuesday-Saturday. Mandatory – Easter holidays - one week work experience during the school holiday - either Sunday-Thursday or Tuesday-Saturday. This is our busiest time of year so you will be working under pressure. Holidays ~ please note ~ We expect students to take no more than 2-weeks off during the May-June exam period. This is hay making time - and understanding grass growing and harvesting is an incredibly important learning experience. In line with statutory holidays students may take up to six weeks (i.e. 6 days) holiday per year – one of which days will be during the Christmas stand-down period. Year 2 One day a week continues through the autumn and winter months. Most students arrange off-farm work experiences during the October school holidays. Early spring - students work with newborn/hand reared lambs and kids, refreshing/strengthening/practising Year 1 skills Students are set weekly subjects on a whole variety of agricultural subjects for presentation to staff the following weekend. This rapidly expands learning and awareness. Mandatory - February ½ term holiday, Sun-Thu or Tue-Sat – lambing will really begin to make sense – it’s a fantastic time of year. This year you may be able to assist with a lambing, you will certainly be iodine-ing newborn lambs and giving ewes and lambs heptivac injections. Injections, castration, foot trimming, ringing, record keeping, ordering feeds ... there is much to practice and new jobs to learn. Mandatory – Easter holidays - one week work experience during the school holiday - either Sunday-Thursday or Tuesday-Saturday. This is our busiest time of year so you will be working under pressure. You will be leading chick handling, egg collecting and egg boxing sessions. Customer service - you should be ready to start serving in the farm shop, welcoming visitors to the farm, helping them with chick handling - and serving them on the till. When you can do this, you will become a paid member of staff - if we have a vacancy. Working in the farm shop can only be undertaken when a student has sufficient knowledge from working on the farmyard. Visitors/customers have every imaginable questions and you need to be able to answer them with confidence and knowledge. You will be working with very young piglets, calves, lambs, kids, chicks, ducklings, turkey poults - and their adults. You will be ear tagging, worming, foot trimming, handling, feeding, moving – there’s never a dull moment at Farmer Gow’s. You will work with younger work experience students and with children on farm workshops – this will practice team leading skills Summer holidays - one week work experience (if required) on farm - or a week at another local farm/business. We will provide you with telephone numbers and a contact name. You will have a wealth of farm knowledge and handling experience on all the farm species - cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, geese, ducks and turkeys. You will be able to lead small groups of visitors through Meet the Animals. You will be able to answer their questions confidently and accurately. These skills are particularly valuable for interviews with prospective employers/university You will understand the 20+ animal medicines we use each year to safeguard our animals; you will understand routine/seasonal tasks. You will be able to medicate - orally and by injection - our farm animals. You will be able to arrange other work experiences very easily - because you have reached a level of competence which will be useful to other farms and businesses. When you have passed your driving test - you will be able to join a high end dairy farm and enjoy learning about milking and the dairy industry - unless of course you have a parent willing and able to drive you to 4am milking. Post School and on to University or other employment We will be very proud of you and want to know how you are getting on We will welcome you back for summer/Christmas/Easter work We will continue to support you - with references and contacts for further work experiences Summary The above is a basic description of the work experience opportunity available at Farmer Gow’s. We expect a lot – but offer a lot in return. If the relationship doesn’t develop well – it is normally due to a lack of commitment from the student. We will tell you and we will end the placement. Finally (as if we haven't already said an awful lot) we ask you to sign up to the above - and if you are under 18 years of age we ask a parent/guardian to co-sign - so that we all know what has been agreed and what is expected. Whether you are brand new to sewing or brushing up on old skills our small class is perfect for you to learn new skills. With only 4 people per class there is plenty of time for me to give individual help and tuition. There's no curriculum at Make it! Each student can work on their own projects whether that's home furnishings or dressmaking. There's no point in making a cushion cover if you really just want to learn how to make a posh frock! If you're not sure of what you'd like to make, don't worry I have lots of ideas and plenty of patterns. For beginners, there's no need to bring anything. I have lots of machines for you to try out and endless boxes of fabric and thread to play with. If you have your own machine please feel free to bring it and I'll help you set it up. You don't need to commit to a block of classes. You can book weekly for any of the classes held at the studio. This is perfect if you work alternating shifts or at weekends or even if your look after your grandchildren on the odd occasion. All of the other classes are listed on the main page.
