Overview
Facilitated by registered nurses with first hand clinical experience, this ½ day blended learning course allows attendees to gain theoretical and practical pressure area care knowledge.
This training course is intended to cover all aspects of pressure area care including practical application within a classroom or virtual environment.
Why Is It Important?
The 2009 Parkside Nursing Home tragedy marked a turning point in raising awareness for pressure area care training. 5 residents within their care died between July 22nd and August 6th as a direct response from pressure ulcers developed during their admission. 
Since 2009 various initiatives have been introduced, however incidents of pressure ulcers remain at a disappointingly high level. Each year in the NHS in England, just under a quarter of a million patients develop a new pressure ulcer with, on average, 2000 newly acquired pressure ulcers developing each month (Public Health England, 2015). 
Pressure ulcers are the result of tissue damage caused by diminishing blood supply to the skin, usually because the area has been placed under pressure (NPUAP/EPUAP/PPPIA, 2014). It is felt 95% of all pressure sores are avoidable.

Our Introduction to Phlebotomy and Advanced Phlebotomy Training Kits are supplied at no charge when booking our virtual classroom training option.
If you would like to add one or both of these kits to your classroom training option then these are available to add at time of booking. Our comprehensive training kits each mirror the same equipment and supplies used in the classroom and both include detailed video tutorials, allowing you to continue to practice and "hone" your skills after you have completed your practical training.

VIRTUAL CLASSROOM OPTION- Complete your theory training online at home or work, then join us for a one day Zoom session to complete your Introduction to Phlebotomy virtual classroom training, followed by your Advanced Training in the evening of the same day. Demonstration of the IR vein detector for assisting in detection of difficult veins.

Detecting suitable veins in the back of the hand.
6 - POC testing:
Point of Care Testing - use of glucose meter to demonstrate a typical POC test procedure. Correct use and overview of other POC test devices.
7 - Using lancets (finger collection)
We look at the correct use of lancets for POC testing and whole blood micro-collection.
8 - Using lancets (heel collection)
We look at the correct use of lancets for neonatal blood spot tests (Guthrie Test).
9 - Capillary collection
Using glass capillary tubes for micro-collection. Correct use and handling.
10 - Microtube collection
Correct use of BD Microtainers (and similar micro-collection bottles) - collection and handling.

To be eligible to sit your first exam, you have to complete your electronic Record of Experience (eROE). The eROE has to be submitted to your tutor by 31st Jan for March exam, and 31st August for November exam.

Complete our Advanced Phlebotomy & Cannulation on your computer or tablet (at home or work) and in your own time. The course can be completed in stages - you have 8 weeks to complete the course in full.
 
The nationally recognised and accredited certificate (awarded by the Open College Network) can be added to your existing certificate credit value (cumulative credits), and these may also count towards other similar college or university courses.
 
This course is suitable for you if:


You currently work (or have recently worked) as a phlebotomist and wish to add an expand on your knowledge of this subject with a valuable additional qualification, or,
You have completed our Introduction to Phlebotomy Course or have completed a similar course from an approved supplier and wish to update and renew your accreditation, or,
You seek CPD (continual professional development) or requested by your employer as part of your CPD or Induction Programme.

M02: Basic Phlebotomy - revision:
Recap of basic phlebotomy theory and practice - precursor to the
advanced course.
 
M03: Specialised Advanced Phlebotomy Equipment:
Equipment and practices in unusual situations.
Patients with special needs and requiring specific attention.
Equipment preparation for blood samples that are collected at 0
degrees, 37 degrees C and other non-standard conditions.
A look at advances in technology and how to use the latest devices.
 
M04: Point of Care Testing:
What is POC Testing? Advantages, Disadvantages and Clinical
Outcomes. Comparison of POC with lab testing. 10 common POC
tests. Roles for phlebotomists performing POC Tests.
 
M05 Neonates and Children:
Sample collection from newborn to pre-adult. A detailed overview of
legal principles of law including child consent and child protection for
phlebotomists. Neonatal and child blood collection equipment.
A comprehensive look at heel and finger-prick procedurs.
 
M06: Geriatric Patients:
The challenges of phlebotomy in older people. Understanding skin
changes and venepuncture implications. A profile of common geriatric
blood tests. Age related problems. Procedural precautions.
 
M07 Special Procedures
Special procedures relating to patient handling and sample handling.
Drug trials and research projects.
 
M08 Special Tests and Sample Handling
A look at sample collection at specific times of day and night,
samples that are protected from light, collected on ice and
collected at body temperature. Procedures for each group.
 
M09 Peripheral (Advanced) Phlebotomy Tasks
A detailed look at advanced roles within a clinical environment
including group leadership, data management, QA procedures
and training.

PART II - CANNULATION
M11 Peripheral IV Cannulation - Introduction
Definitions - understanding terminology relating to PIVC.
IV Therapy and NMC guidelines.

Legal obligations and accountability. Criminal, Civil and Contractual
law in healthcare. Vicarious Liability and your duty of care.

Sites appropriate to IV cannulation. Hand vs. arm.

M14 Hygiene and Infection Prevention Control (IPC)
