Have you heard the one about the Finance Director who said, ‘What if we spend money training our people, and then they leave?’. To which the CEO replies, ‘What if we don’t train our people and then they stay?’. Admittedly, it won’t get me a headline spot on Live at the Apollo, but it does point out something very important. Simply this, that ongoing training is very important. Even now. Especially now. An organisation should have learning and development written into its core values. The landscape of work is changing and people need to have skills that will help them navigate that tricky landscape. Time and again, growth and development opportunities are cited as chief motivators at work. This means not only formal training, but on the job development. Imagine a leader who has the courage to support a colleague to undertake a new project, something they’ve never done before and the success of which is unclear. Imagine a colleague who grasps that opportunity to innovate, knowing that there’s a steep learning curve ahead, but that their line manager has their back. Imagine this is your organisation and that both of those valuable people have taken their lead from you. It does take a leap of faith to invest in learning and development, especially of those soft skills. The word ‘soft’ doesn’t help, though, does it, and probably leaves that Finance Director, well-versed in Excel and complex accounting software (very ‘hard’), palpitating at the cost. Author Heather McGowan has relabelled the ‘soft’ skills as ‘uniquely human’ skills. That’s a rather splendid phrase. Unique and Human.

Paradice Ice Rink Avondale

PARADICE A BRIEF HISTORY One day in the early 1970’s Ross Blong, a farmer with imagination as it turned out, came home from a particularly unpleasant milking and told his wife Nell he had enough and wanted to find something different to do! After searching for a “people business” they decided on an ice skating rink in Glen Innes and purchased it in 1974. After a steep learning curve they established Paradice on the map as a great family entertainment facility in Auckland. By 1980 they had dreams of building New Zealand’s first international size indoor arena and had it up and running by May 1981 at our current Avondale location at Lansford Cresent. It has been popular ever since with families and as a “hang out” for teens and young adults. There have been several transformations since its opening with the most recent being completed in 2011 to include a state of the art ice floor, dasher boards and refrigeration system. By the late 1990’s the second family generation having being heavily involved in ice sports at an international level dreamed of a second, Olympic sized indoor ice rink, again a first for New Zealand, and it was built in 1999 at its current location Botany Downs. The rink is still going strong today. In 2012 Paradice owned and operated Auckland’s first temporary outdoor ice rink at Aotea Square which has turned into an annual winter wonderland type event with the addition of NZ’s first event ice slide in 2014. Our temporary ice rinks have expanded to Rotorua, Wellington, and Taupo. Through the years Paradice has operated as a family, customer focused friendly business with staff sharing their passion for people and ice with innovation!

Blackburn,

Lancashire Digital was founded in 2004 by Greg and Len Adam as a dedicated educational software team. All of the inital staff were hand-picked for their experience working in the education sector. Throughout the next 10 years, Lancashire Digital went from strength to strength, working with education industry leaders including Pearson Education, Promethean and Cambridge University Press. With a strong internal philosophy and clear strategy and leadership from Managing Director, Greg Adam, the team has grown and continues to grow. In 2006 the company decided to widen their focus, although keeping a strong educational slant, working with training providers to create e-learning training materials for corporates, government agencies and more. Buckshaw Village green man The conversion from Flash to HTML5 Over the early years of the company, the predominant technology used in the company was Adobe Flash and most of the internal developers would recognise Flash as their core skill. In 2010 however, Greg realised that the days of Flash as the main delivery mechanism for e-learning were numberered and the internal team started their transition to development using HTML5. This foresight proved to be revolutionary for the company, as Lancashire Digital developers were upskilled to HTML5 well ahead of the curve. This put them in a strong position to win work for both new development using HTML5, but given the cross-skills of the team, a large quantity of Flash to HTML5 conversion projects were undertaken. Today sees the team as a well-seasoned group of HTML5 developers with a strong background in Flash development, along with back-end specialist developers for our platforms projects. You read it right - we are turning 30 this year! To celebrate GAK's 30th anniversary and our fresh look, we're going to delve into our history and how we grew into one of the top music retailers in the UK. It's been a long journey from very humble beginnings to getting to where we are today. And it all started with one man and a market stall. 1992 HUMBLE BEGINNINGS It's been a long journey from very humble beginnings to getting to where we are today. And it all started with one man and a market stall. 1995 BRITPOP EXPLOSION Britpop bands like Oasis, Blur, Suede and Pulp were all electric guitar-based, markedly increasing the demand for the instrument. As the popularity of the guitar flourished, so did the business. 2000 FRESH EXPANSION The business would begin to flourish and grow at a seriously quick pace. Bigger and bigger premises were needed to keep up with the ever-growing amount of stock that needed shipping to customers. 2010 BRAVE NEW WORLD The Internet was a lot like the Wild West back in its early days. By having the foresight and the initiative to delve into this new frontier of sales, we were able to get ahead of the curve and grow alongside the Internet boom. 2016 TEA TO MD From GAK's early days, Max McKellar was helping drive the business forward as it entered unexplored territory. Today, he's leading the company as our Managing Director - a long way to come from cleaning guitars and making tea! 1994 SETTING THE TONE From the beginning, the store was a down-to-earth and unpretentious place to buy your music gear. Everyone was welcome and they were free to try out whatever they wanted. 1996 BEYOND THE STORE A flat above the store had its kitchen and bathroom converted to a mail-order room and office respectively. To spread the word about GAK's Mail Order service, print ads would be run in popular magazines such as Guitarist and Sound On Sound. 2002 THE INTERNET AGE We were one of the first music retailers in the country to go online and have an e-commerce store. Our customers could buy their dream piece of gear, have it brought straight to their house and receive the same friendly service you'd get into the store. 2014 DESTINATION HUB With help from the eye-catching print ads and the enormous success of the website, word spread about what an exciting place the GAK store is to visit. You can walk in and discover something new around each corner. 2022 30 YEARS AND BEYOND As we reach the major milestone that is our 30th birthday, we are beyond excited to unveil the brand new look and feel of the GAK brand. We're looking forward to what the next thirty years and beyond have in store for us.

London

The world was rocked by a global pandemic, with lockdowns making the digital experience more essential than ever. Undeterred, we rose to substantial challenges by transforming our office culture to utilize the benefits of remote working, developing new services, and securing business from London. Our doubling down on our philosophy helped us navigate this difficult period for our partners, as our work in 2020 led to us being named the number one agency in the UK for client satisfaction by The Drum, alongside a fourth consecutive year of recognition from Clutch. More of the UK’s leading businesses were drawn to our award-winning agency. We completed big projects for Adobe and the Paris Saint Germain Academy, while proudly bringing on key clients like The Cumberland Building Society and the British Woodworking Federation. So we focused on expanding our strong team. This included bringing in some of the region’s best talent in PPC, design, and content to deliver businesses the best results. While keeping our ears to the ground and working hard to stay ahead of the curve when it came to digital trends, we were hand-picked out of 1000 other agencies by the search engine gods at Google to participate in their prestigious Google Elevator program. This led us to land some of our biggest clients such as Money Supermarket and Merlin – and they were just the beginning … We worked all year with the UK’s most trusted brand, the AA, and expanded our offices with top new talent. At the same time, we celebrated our 10th anniversary in fine style – this included nominations in three categories for the Northern Digital Awards. New and innovative ad strategies are implemented, and we try our hand at sophisticated programmatic advertising and remarketing. Yikes! Never fear, as we further developed our performance-based lead generation model, whilst breaking sales records for clients such as Booths Supermarkets and Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

The Smokin' Elk BBQ School

the smokin' elk bbq school

I’ve been cooking on BBQs for the last 20 years in one form or another. Up until 7 years ago, most of my experience was on gas BBQs, usually the cheap type that you buy off the shelf one year and it rusts out before the following ‘BBQ Season’. This all changed after watching programs such as ‘Man vs Food’ and salivating over all of the American BBQ that was often on the show! I had to get me some of that, but where? There weren’t exactly any BBQ restaurants around in the UK so the only option was to do it myself. I found myself on forums, on Facebook groups, on YouTube and with my head in many books but nothing beat the experience and education of just getting out there and getting on with it. Cue lots of mistakes along the way on a very steep learning curve but here I am today, a whole lot more competent than I was back then. I don’t think its possible to master BBQ or cooking with fire. There is always more to learn and that’s why I love it. There are hundreds of ways to achieve the same end result – good tasting food that puts a smile on your face. Everyone will have their own methods, secret recipes, tips and tricks that work just great for them. I like to try and learn as many of these as possible, inhaling as much fire cooking knowledge as I can along this amazing journey I’m very proud to represent some amazing brands that share my passion. I’m a Fire Squad brand ambassador for Kamado Joe and a Team Temperature brand ambassador for Thermapen. I also work closely with several other brands that share the same principles and together, we help to spread the word of BBQ as far and as wide as we canI’ve decided its now time to share some of the tips, tricks & techniques I’ve learnt over the years, in the hope that it’ll ignite the same passion within you that I feel every day. This is why I’ve created The Smokin’ Elk BBQ School, a project that I’m absolutely buzzing about. This is a school where you’ll learn but almost as importantly, we’ll have fun. And we’ll cook up some damn tasty food along the way! Check out the ‘Classes’ section to check for available classes & dates. I look forward to welcoming you to The Smokin’ Elk BBQ School!
