Sir Martin has spent much of his career in China and Hong Kong. His commitment to international relationships has been a constant feature of his work. Sir Martin is an independent non-executive director of the House of Fraser Group and a board advisor to a number of China and education related businesses. He is also chair of International Inspiration, the sport for development charity which sprang from the London 2012 Olympics and vice chair of Leonard Cheshire Disability, the UK’s leading disability charity. Sir Martin lives with his family in Dorset and is a trustee of the Dorset Community Foundation. Sir Martin was knighted in 2014 for his services to British cultural, scientific and educational interests worldwide.

"We encourage, enable, develop, mentor, facilitate, empower and support local creative arts practitioners from a wide range of backgrounds." Since our Foundation, in September 2014, we have staged over 120 exhibitions showcasing a varied body of work, by artists both emerging and established. Encompassing a diverse and multi-disciplinary range of artistic practices including: Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking, Illustration, Photography, Sound, Video and Performance Art. A comprehensive list of all of our past exhibitions can be found under 'Portfolio'. Our overarching ‘Philosophy’ is to actively encourage, enable, develop, mentor, facilitate, empower and support local creative arts practitioners from a wide range of background with a priority to engage in discussion around accessibility within the arts in relation to mental health, financial hardship and institutional bias. We have also provided work placements to a number of European students, via the Erasmus + and Gecko programme. Partnering with local Venues, Institutes and schools , we aim to develop a strong community that has access to free space, free mentoring and the ability to grow and learn from each others valuable experience and skills. The spaces are offered for hire and for free depending on the nature of the request and is offered to both emerging artists or collectives that deserve a space to explore and harness potential, or established artists with a strong visual aesthetic. Our initiative is to offer this space first and foremost to west-midlands based artists who wish to strengthen their local artistic community and create a discourse for regeneration. We curate approx one show per month in our two exhibition spaces and these are either from chosen submitted proposals or from exceptional and forward thinking artists that we find on our travels. In-between these exhibitions we encourage groups or collectives with a passion for community welfare and development to use the spaces for poetry , music, discussions, rehearsals , workshops or their own curatorial interests. Pedestrian is a leading arts organisation and charity specialising in music and arts education based in the heart of Leicester’s bustling city centre. Since 1998, we have built a strong track record of delivering high quality creative activity that has seen us complete over 14,000 workshops. We provide education, training and outreach projects for young people at risk, vulnerable adults and communities in Leicester, Leicestershire and across the Midlands. Our participants are often socially excluded, not in education, employment or training (NEET) or experiencing disadvantage. We believe that with the right levels of support and timely intervention everyone can achieve their goals, we call this ‘Pioneering Potential’. We have three main areas of work: Alternative Education Provision (AEP) Early Intervention & Outreach Progression & Training Creativity is a key part of our lives, at Pedestrian we offer the chance for everyone to explore this through music, dance, photography, street art, etc regardless of who they are and where they come from.
