This one-day Suicide First Aid training course gives learners the knowledge and tools to understand that suicide is one of the most preventable deaths and some basic skills can help someone with thoughts of suicide stay safe from their thoughts and stay alive.

The course is a four-hour refresher session for those who have completed the Mental Health First Aid two day course. Just like physical first aid, we recommend you refresh your skills regularly and keep up-to-date.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) awareness is a short course, designed to provide delegates with a basic understanding of mental health and an introduction to Mental Health First Aid. This course raises awareness of mental health issues in the workplace. Learning objectives: What mental health is and how to challenge stigma. A basic knowledge of some common mental health issues. An introduction to looking after your own mental health and maintaining wellbeing. Confidence to support someone in distress or who may be experiencing a mental health issue

LOOKING FOR: ADULT FICTION, NON-FICTION Emily MacDonald joined 42 management and production company in 2019, working with Eugenie Furniss across her clients. She is now an agent in the Books Department, and is building her own list. Send Emily a story with characters that just won't leave her and a narrative that pulls her in, keeping her immersed in the world well after she has finished reading. She reads across a wide-range and has a particular interest in: book club, high-concept crime/thriller, upmarket and literary fiction. In fiction, Emily would love to find a crime/thriller set within a subcult: a modern retelling of British folklore (think Kamila Shamsie’s Home Fire); an unconventional love story; and a character led journey of self-discovery (especially one set within a diasporic community). Emily is also looking for narrative non-fiction which immerses the reader into an untold true story (personal or historical), exploring a new point of view, and providing a compelling social commentary, with an investigative twist. Think the obsessive vein of Kirk W. Johnson or personal/political dispatches of Aidan Hartley. Emily wants her horizons to expand while she reads. In both fiction and non-fiction, Emily loves stories woven into their surroundings, where the setting is as central a character as those who drive the narrative. In both spheres, she is keen to hear from Scottish and regional voices with stories to tell. Please note, Emily is not currently accepting submissions for Children's lit/YA and SFF. Emily would like you to submit a covering letter, 1 - 2 page synopsis and the first 5,000 words of your manuscript in a single word document. Course Overview Teaching the theory and practise of suicide intervention skills that can be applied in any professional or personal setting, captured in a one-day event accredited by City and Guilds of London. We use only the most experienced suicide prevention trainers to deliver this unique learning experience: for anyone who seeks greater understanding and confidence to intervene with people at risk of suicide. The Suicide First Aid through Understanding Suicide Intervention (SFAUSI) course gives learners the knowledge and tools to understand that suicide is one of the most preventable deaths and some basic skills can help someone with thoughts of suicide stay safe from their thoughts and stay alive.  Course Content SFAUSI is comprised of 4 parts, each 90 minutes duration. The programme teaches and practices the skills and knowledge needed to identify someone who may be thinking about suicide and competently intervene to help create suicide- safety as a first aid approach.  Part 1  Introduction to: the day; programme; ourselves and suicide prevention Stigma, Survivors of bereavement by suicide and the Hidden Toll Suicide thoughts and suicide behaviour Intention of behaviour Versus Outcome of behaviour Possible Causes of Suicidal thoughts Part 2 Suicide – the Ripple Effect Population-based approach to suicide prevention Partnership working Working with attitudes and values “I’m so glad you told me” - Audio visual Part 3 Meeting the needs of a person who is thinking about suicide Suicide-Safety Guide Step 1 – Recognising suicide and asking about suicide Step 2 – Understanding options Part 4 Step 3 – Safeguarding suicide Suicide-safety and self-care The risk assessment approach Suicide and suicide gestures Future learning Format Taught over 6 hours using tutor facilitated Socratic learning, tutor-led practice session, mini lectures, group work and audio-visual presentations. This is a highly interactive and emotionally engaging learning experience.  Pre-training requirement No previous experience or training is necessary. Participants will be asked to self-reflect and empathise with a person having thoughts of suicide. There is no expectation on participants to share personal experiences.  Who should attend?  Multi-sector managers and practitioners including health, housing, social care, education, criminal justice, call centre operators, private, voluntary and public sector workers and community groups or members.  Accreditation Participants can choose to register for the City and Guilds accredited unit of learning for an additional fee of £85 per person. This involves completion of a written assignment.

This half day online course will assist candidates in preparing for the forthcoming initial Casework Assistant exam.

Each session builds on the previous, enabling the learner to gain confidence in supporting others with a Mental Health First Aid action plan. We limit numbers to 16 people per course so that instructors can keep people safe and supported while they learn. The Emergency Lighting BS 5266 one day course is based upon BS5266:1 (including latest amendments), BS5266:7 and BS5266:8. Emergency lighting is essential for the safety of building occupants. It is vital that the emergency lighting automatically operates in the event of normal lighting failure. The illumination levels and period of time the illumination can be sustained should be sufficient to allow the building occupants to evacuate safely and locate both fire alarm, fire fighting and first aid equipment. The Emergency Lighting BS 5266 course provides the necessary information to designate emergency escape routes and design and commission an emergency lighting scheme to BS 5266. The morning of the Emergency Lighting BS 5266 course is spent reading through and interpreting the relevant parts of BS 5266. The afternoon takes the form of a practical workshop where a system is designed and the participant is then introduced to the practical issues of commissioning, inspection and testing, certification and reporting.
