What is mindfulness? Mindfulness is the practice of bringing one’s full
attention to the present moment; observing thoughts, feelings and actions
without judgment. Developing mindfulness involves learning the techniques of
meditation, awareness of the breath and physical relaxation. This enables the
individual to experience greater calmness, self-acceptance and peace of mind.
Why practise it? There has been substantial research into the health benefits of
mindfulness meditation; at Bangor, Oxford, Exeter Universities here in the UK
and at the University of Massachusetts in the US. The research indicates that
regular mindfulness practice can significantly benefit physical and

be beneficial in the treatment of stress, depression, addictions and chronic
pain. It is currently being taught in workplaces and health care centres across
the UK.
