Barista Basics Workshop at Two Chimps Roastery
Does your flat white have a flat tire? Is your cappuccino a cause for concern? Come along to our Barista Basics Workshop and go from freshly ground disaster to espresso excellence.
Running for around two and a half hours, our Barista Basics Workshop is a hands-on course dealing with everything espresso. We roast in small batches because we believe in giving our full attention to the important things, and it’s the same with our courses. You’ll be in a small group of at most eight fellow coffee lovers, ensuring everyone gets the maximum attention and guidance from our master barista.
All good coffee begins with the beans, so that’s where we start. We’ll teach you all about speciality coffee – what it is and how it’s grown, picked, processed, and sourced. We’re a climate positive roastery, so we couldn’t do this without discussing the environmental and ethical impact of speciality coffee. We’ll also stop by the roaster for a quick overview of the roasting process and the impact it has on your cup.
Then it’s on to the real meat of the day – working with our professional-grade barista machines and grinders to produce great-tasting espresso. You’ll learn how to dial in your grind settings, how to dose, tame, tamp, and extract espresso, and how to pull a great shot. We’ll teach you how to spot over and under-extraction, and what to do to fix any issues with your espresso.
Once you have the basics down, we’ll move on to discuss more advanced techniques like manipulating your coffee-to-water ratio to create different ‘espresso style’ shots, as well as a brief introduction to steaming and texturizing milk to create things like lattes and flat whites.
Finally, it’s time for the ‘drinks-off’, where we go through all the popular espresso-based drinks and how to make them before letting you loose on the machines and giving you the chance to put what you’ve learned into practice, making everything from a cortado to a cappuccino.
