Advanced level
The TEFL + Proficiency course is for you if you want to: i) raise your English language ability from Advanced to Proficiency level, and/or ii) learn how to teach English in a non-traditional and highly effective way. TEFL+ Proficiency is also especially useful for you if you want to know why so many English language "rules" you learned in school don't apply when you come to actually using the language in real-life contexts. The course is based on my own application of Systemic-Funcional Linguistics to the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) in my own language classrooms over 40+ years of teaching.
The course is hands-on, and you learn the theory through collaborative/interactive practice in a supportive yet challenging learning environment. Unlike in traditional courses, you also learn through interaction with me as we analyse texts to learn techniques of reading and writing and then apply those together as we co-write our own texts collaboratively onscreen.
There is an integrated self-study component that means you can continue to learn between class sessions, thereby maximising learning and minimising cost. Places are limited to 4 participants per course, so sign up early to book your place.
Yes. Your teacher has an M.Sc. and M.Litt. in Applied Linguistics, the PGCE in English, and the RSA DELTA. She has also supervised student teachers' dissertations on the M.A. in TEFL course at Edinburgh University and has trained teachers in High Schools and Universities in Japan.
You will be taught using a non-traditinal approach to teaching that is based in Michael Halliday's Systemic-Functional Linguistics. You will learn how to teach the grammar of English, not as based in tense/time, but in ASPECT/viewpoint / opinion. You will also learn techniques on how to teach your students the structure of formal writing in order to improve their Rading and Writing in English. You will learn using classroom materials that you will then be able to adapt for use in your own classrooms.
You will be taught vis Zoom/Skype using the same Systemic-Functional based approach that you will learn to teach your own students. This approach is highly INTERACTIVE, and you will learn by INTERACTING with your teacher and other students as we analyse texts and write our own texts COLLABORATIVELY. using 'Screenshare'. You will also have optional Integrated Self-Study. The ore self-study you so, the more you will benefit from the course.
Yes. You would also benefit from joining the 'Academic Language and Skills' and the 'Employability' courses. These train students to reach the higher levels of Proficiency n English for Academic Purposes and to gain Employment, and they would be useful as examples of how to put Interactive Language Teaching (ILT) into practice in your own classrooms.
