This 5 day camp is a bark tanning intensive.
You'll learn ancient processes of using tree barks to tan and preserve skin into leather and furs.
You will leave with a full understanding of the process and how it applies to a range of different animals skins, setting you up with the knowledge and experience to start tanning projects at home.
Its a jam packed 5 days!
We will cover:
Harvesting, processing and boiling bark to make tanning solutions
Bark tanning rabbit skins with the fur
Skinning and filleting fish
Bark tanning small fish skins and larger salmon skins
Bark tanning sheep skins rugs
Softening a pre tanned deer skin leather
Sewing pouches from leather and fish skin
You will leave this camp with:
A fluffy rabbit skin
A bark tanned salmon skin and smaller fish skin
A whole sheep skin rug/sleeping mat
A piece of leather (dividing a deer skin between the group, hair off, shiny leather)
Pouches and bags made from your leather and fish skins
Camp life
This camp will take place in a beautiful ancient Dartmoor woodland and meadow full of granite boulders and plenty of wild walks and peaceful woodland spots.
Participants can make camp in the woods and meadow.
Bring a tent or tarp or contact us if you want to book alternative shelter as there are a few options.
We have a covered camp fire and compost toilet facilities.
We invite people to fully immerse in camp life - going with the rhythms of the day, and the hides. Please do your best to leave screens and technology behind.
This course provides all tools, materials and an organic, hearty dinner every night.
