In the UK, an estimated 1 in 5 children have experienced abuse or neglect. Additionally, there were over 70,000 child protection referrals in 2020 alone. Therefore, it is essential that individuals working with children or in positions of authority have a good understanding of child abuse and neglect to ensure the safety and well-being of children.
The course Child Abuse and Neglect is designed to provide learners with an understanding of safeguarding, laws, and guidance regarding child protection. The course covers different types of child abuse, including sexual abuse, and teaches learners how to assess risks and respond to disclosures. It also covers the process of referral, what to do after referral, and the importance of record-keeping.
Learning Outcomes:
Understand the importance of safeguarding children
Identify relevant laws and guidance for child protection
Recognise different types of child abuse and their impact on children

The course is divided into eight modules, starting with an introduction to safeguarding and progressing to more specific topics such as child abuse and sexual abuse.
In Module 1, learners will be introduced to the concept of safeguarding and why it is important to protect children from harm. The module covers the basic principles of safeguarding and the different types of abuse that children may experience. Module 2 focuses on relevant laws and guidance for child protection in the UK.
Module 3 is dedicated to child abuse, including physical abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect. Learners will understand how to identify the signs and symptoms of each type of abuse and the impact it can have on a child's development. In Module 4, the course explores sexual abuse and how to respond appropriately to disclosures.
Module 5 covers risks associated with child abuse and how to assess them. Learners will understand how to conduct a risk assessment and how to develop a safety plan to protect children from harm. Module 6 provides guidance on how to respond to a disclosure of abuse, including what to say and how to report it.
After a referral has been made, learners will understand the process of what to do in Module 7. The course covers what happens after referral and how to support the child and family. Finally, in Module 8, learners will understand the importance of record-keeping and how to maintain accurate records of safeguarding concerns.
