Description

Taking Your Book To School® Walkie-talkie Style!

Access to me for a full day, 9–5, to move your book closer to school.

So, you’ve written a children's book and now you’re trying to get it from your shelf to the classroom and into the hands of children …

Now what?

You know that schools are the gatekeepers of your target market: children and their families and you know that teachers and school visits should be on your radar.

How do you get in, though?

I’m Isobel Kent, an editor and proofreader of inclusive books for children and I teach children’s authors how to market their books to UK schools. As a former school librarian and governors’ clerk, I know what teachers want and need in the classroom, where they look and how to unlock the budget for books and school visits.

When I was a school librarian, I rarely acted on the cold emails sent to me by children’s authors, because they weren’t what I was looking for. On your walkie-talkie day, we can examine where teachers and school librarians look for children’s authors for school visits and how they use books to support the curriculum, so that you can engage with schools in whichever way suits you.

Unlike my online group-coaching course, Taking Your Book To School®, which runs in the autumn over six weeks, this is one-day, focused access to me so that you can concentrate on what you need right now. We work on removing the blocks that are obstructing your author journey to UK schools, so that you can get back on the road.

Children are not all the same – and neither are children’s authors. We have a variety of brains, learning styles, preferences, commitments and needs. This walkie-talkie format is designed to reduce pressure, increase accountability and add a dose of excitement to your day so that you can make progress quickly and efficiently.

Let your creativity flow in a reduced-pressure environment, working alongside me so that it’s fun but you’re still held accountable.

How does it work?

  1. We set your intentions for the day with achievable goals. You send a copy of your book to me to read in advance.

  1. Using Voxer (or Messenger or WhatsApp if you prefer), we communicate on a walkie-talkie basis, sending and receiving text and/or voice messages during the working day, 09:00–17:00 GMT/BST.

  1. That’s it. Eight-hour access to me (half days available) so that you can hyperfocus for the day and get the job done.

Think of it like roadside assistance or a helpline – but a professional human, not a chatbot.

What are the advantages?

  • Accountability with the flexibility to explore ideas as they arise

  • Less pressure than one-to-one face-to-face training or coaching

  • You conserve energy by avoiding the face time, so you can use it creatively instead

  • You can communicate and receive information in whatever way is the most productive for you – audio or text

  • You can replay or reread messages in your own time

  • You can work anywhere

  • You can get up and move around

  • If you get distracted, I can hold you accountable and help you to stay focused

  • You get things done more quickly than group coaching as you can ask questions and get suggestions, solutions or strategies to work on straight away

  • It’s fun – let your creativity run wild and I’ll help you turn that into strategies to get your book into schools

This is for you if:

  • You have published a book for children

  • You have published traditionally or independently

  • You write picture books, middle grade or young adult – fiction, non-fiction or poetry

  • You want to start or do more author visits to schools in the UK.

You get:

  • A questionnaire, where you set your intentions and goals for the day, around a week beforehand

  • My eyes on your book

  • Eight hours of Voxer support (or Messenger/WhatsApp if you prefer).

At the end of the day you should:

  • Have some strategies and suggestions to get your book into UK schools and move your author business forward.
