Course Description

This course provides Registered Nurses with the essential knowledge and practical understanding required to safely assess, prepare, administer, and evaluate blood transfusion and blood component therapy. The session builds confidence in clinical decision-making, consent, correct patient identification, monitoring, and recognition of transfusion reactions to ensure safe and effective care in line with NICE NG24, NHS Blood and Transplant, MHRA, and Skills for Health CSTF standards.


Course Overview

This training is delivered on a one-to-one basis, allowing the session to be tailored to the learner’s experience, clinical setting, and confidence level. The date and time are arranged flexibly to suit both the participant and the trainer.

This course is ideal for Registered Nurses working in community, domiciliary, residential care, or hospital settings who require competence in transfusion safety as part of their role.


Key Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the principles and clinical indications for blood transfusion and component therapy.

  • Assess patients effectively and support informed decision-making.

  • Obtain and document valid consent for transfusion.

  • Identify blood groups and compatibility requirements (ABO and RhD).

  • Carry out pre-transfusion identity and component checks safely and accurately.

  • Administer blood components using appropriate equipment and monitoring standards.

  • Recognise and respond to transfusion reactions promptly and safely.

  • Document transfusions accurately and comply with traceability, SHOT, and SABRE reporting requirements.

  • Demonstrate accountability under the NMC Code (2018).
