Acadia University

acadia university

Founded in 1838, Acadia University is one of the oldest and most respected liberal arts universities in Canada. Located just a one-hour drive from Halifax, Nova Scotia and its international airport, Acadia is an integral part of the quintessential college town of Wolfville, overlooking the Annapolis Valley and the Bay of Fundy. Acadia’s 3,574 students come from nearly every province and nearly 60 countries to take advantage of our strong academic programs, a curriculum that encourages personal development, and collaborative learning experiences led by award-winning professors. Students are encouraged to become part of a scholarly community that encourages and inspires them. Community engagement, real-world opportunities, and meaningful research at the undergraduate level are pillars of an Acadia education. The University recognizes that learning means living every moment in and out of class. Working closely with their professors is something that can be transformative for both our faculty and students, and often results in lifelong friendships. In addition to the academic experience, co-curricular and campus life programs enhance learning opportunities and help students develop teamwork and leadership skills. Acadia has a long tradition of respecting diversity. Each member of the community has different experiences to share, enriching classroom and casual interactions. Our liberal arts curriculum, combined with the intangible Acadia spirit and sense of belonging, lays a strong foundation for our students’ future aspirations – travel, post-graduate study, careers, and family. An Acadia education helps our students grow and prepares them for life. REQUEST INFORMATION

Hammersmith Academy

London,

Since we opened in 2011 Hammersmith Academy has been striving to do something different. I founded HA because I wanted to create an inspiring school in the local community that had a clear vision, fostered self-confidence in its students and provided a Private School level of education for all. At HA we have adopted the Growth Mindset: excellence isn’t given at birth, but earned through hard work and determination. We focus on pushing our students to attain the highest qualifications they can, but they will only do that if they also develop a strong character. Qualifications open the door, but character gets you through it. Our longer lessons, peer to peer leadership, and mandatory ‘Session 3’ extra-curricular programme, ensure a richer, more in-depth delivery of the national curriculum, in which students take responsibility for each other and have ample opportunity to embrace subjects and skills they feel passionately about. We set high expectations and challenge our students to aspire to be outstanding in all areas of school life. From their uniform, to their attitude to learning, to their conduct in and outside of the classroom, we expect an exemplary approach at all times. Students and staff adopt a professionalism that would be standard in any job, to fully prepare our young people for the world of work. Our students and our staff work exceptionally hard, and you can see that in the sheer amount of quality work and experience that is achieved on a day to day basis. You can see evidence of this in any of our termly newsletters, or on our social media. In my experience of working in inner-city education, and my own time at school, I sometimes saw an attitude that assumed some people ‘can’t do’, and I knew this was wrong. I see that people, of any age, will respond to clear boundaries and clear vision. If you show your students you have belief in them and encourage them to have belief in themselves, their confidence grows and they surprise themselves with what they can achieve. Our students will leave school not only academically qualified, but confident, mature and ready to prove themselves.

As Christmas approaches, many of us find ourselves wondering how best to balance our budget and sustainability consciousness with the consumerist expectations promoted through the media. And this Christmas those concerns feel as real as ever. In the wake of Covid, and with the huge challenges of the cost-of-living crisis, young people across Devon are suffering from more mental health issues than ever before. “In the last three years, the likelihood of young people having a mental health problem has increased by 50%. Now, five children in a classroom of 30 are likely to have a mental health problem.” The Children’s Society Meanwhile, schools have their purse strings tightened weekly. Access to the arts is often one of the first priorities to be cut in school, even while children are known to benefit from it now, as much as ever. “I had a parent nearly in tears the next morning, as she spoke about how much her child had loved it and how it had boosted her confidence. This makes a huge difference to our families.” Assistant Head, Exeter Your donation supports Daisi’s continuing work with young people in schools and communities across Devon. From workshops in schools which offer children a practical experience with an artform they may never have previously tried, to longer projects that make a real difference to children’s lives, your contribution will help us to bring creative and inspirational experiences to children who need it. To receive your (pdf) certificate by email and sign up to Daisi’s mailing list, please complete the form below after making your donation, and before Tuesday 20 December.

Newport Girls' High School Academy

From the Headteacher, Michael Scott May I extend a warm welcome to our website. Newport Girls’ High School offers an all-round education with considerable strengths both inside and beyond the classroom. We support students academically to achieve their potential, whilst also developing resilience and promoting emotional wellbeing. As a relatively small school, there is a real family-feel to NGHS and our house system affords students the chance to meet peers in other year groups and to participate in healthy competition in a wide range of disciplines. There is an extra-curricular activity to suit all tastes at NGHS and staff work exceptionally hard to provide these opportunities for our students. We also organise a number of key open events during the academic year and welcome visitors to see all that NGHS has to offer. Our curriculum is academically rigorous with all students studying two modern languages in KS3 and separate sciences at GCSE. Some students also study Further Maths as an additional equivalent GCSE. At A-level we offer a full range of subjects to enable progression to university, apprenticeship or employment. Significant support with UCAS applications is available to all. Our pastoral team, comprising both teaching Heads of Year, SENDCO and non-teaching support staff ensure that our students’ individual needs are met and we work closely with families and primary schools to ensure a smooth transfer from Year 6. Newport Girls’ High School was visited by Ofsted in October 2019 for a section 8 inspection. We are delighted to have retained our outstanding status as a result of this visit under the revised Ofsted framework.

Snowflake Education

London

Snowflake Education is dedicated to help universities, schools and organizations with integrating sustainability in their training and education activities. We have developed a completely new and innovative concept for teaching this complex and challenging topic: a combination of online based pre-exercises and active learning board game seminars – put together in a flipped-classroom setting. This method is now used in dozens of schools in several countries, and every year thousands of students learn sustainability with the help of Snowflake Education’s game-based approach. See method for a more in-depth description of our pedagogical method. Mission Every student should get the training and teaching they need to be able to contribute to a better world. We believe that sustainability is not only important to integrate in all education, but that sustainability is in fact the reason for why we conduct education in the first place. At the core of the concept of sustainability lies to work for a better world. And helping their students to achieve the tools to be able to do exactly that – is probably what motivates every teacher and every professor in the world to go to work every day. Therefore, finding a straightforward and effective way to integrate a sustainability perspective in any subject course should be the obvious choice for all educators. The Snowflake Education method is tailored for doing just that. Team Snowflake Education is a small start-up based in Stockholm, Sweden – but with a world-wide reach. Our small but dedicated team believes that what we do can actually play a huge role for what will happen with the world.
