About Compass Education and Training At Compass Education, we strive to keep our courses the best they can be. Since the beginning, our courses have been based on knowledge, experience, and a passion for animals. Our courses are written, edited and published by professionals with years of teaching and first hand experience with animals, giving you the best quality of study material available. A word from our Director For anyone embarking on a course of study it can be a difficult time, deciding which course, whether or not you will enjoy it and wondering what you will get for your investment are just some of the things that you will be considering. I hope that by telling you something about myself, my passion for and life of involvement with animals you will understand a little of the enthusiasm that has gone into creating Compass Education and Training over the last 23 years. Apart from my time in the forces I have had dogs in my life since I was five years old and being in my sixties that means a lot of dogs, everything from working breeds, toy breeds, terriers, utility breeds to hounds. I have seen the joy of puppies growing up, the hard work of the elderly and infirm dog and experienced the devastation of losing many friends, the pride of being unconditionally accepted by them, the frustrations and elations of working with rescued dogs and everything in between. We currently have 11 dogs and I cannot imagine life without them, they are an inspiration, no more so than when I was going through treatment for cancer 11 years ago. David Montgomery David Montgomery Without qualifications I felt that despite my knowledge and experience I could only be regarded, like so many others working with animals, as a keen amateur. I read books, picked up information from television, trained my dogs and rescued any injured wildlife I came across or was brought to me. It was then I decided that if I was to become truly professional I needed a better education, so in 1994 I enrolled at Oxford Brookes University on a combined studies degree of Psychology and Animal Behaviour. Three years later I achieved my 2:1 BSc (Hons) and for those of you wondering if it’s possible whilst working in your late thirties and paying a mortgage, there is the evidence. After graduating I studied Counselling Skills at University College London and went on to professionally offer behaviour counselling.

Her training started by assisting Miriam Bartholomew (her mother and top hair and makeup artist in Cape Town S.A) for beautiful hair and makeup, as well as Dulcie Bebe in Australia for Makeup and Hair training with Toni and Guy London after studying specialist hair colour training with David Bartholomew ( her dad) Nominated in Sydney Australia for colourist of the year for Wella international. Victoria continued to work in film, fashion and commercials in the hair and makeup industry in cape town, Sydney and then returning to live in London for 5 years before moving to West Yorkshire then Liverpool. Her love of film grew and she embarked on a series of courses through Raindance Film in Soho, completing the Directing for Film and Producing course while working for them. This took her onto her next challenge choreography where she worked at London’s premier dance school on Oxford street London Dance works and learnt from the best contemporary dance teachers what works for theatre, film and music video’s understanding the different dance disciplines from ballet to hip hop. Following all of her incredible achievements, Victoria then decided to pass on her hair and makeup knowledge to the next generation and completed her Diploma in Teaching while lecturing as the lead makeup tutor for Riverside College in Cheshire up until August 2016 and from then on went on to create Global Makeup, Hair and Productions Academy Ltd.

In the late 1990’s and into the New Millennium, things were changing and stirring…. Disciples of Jesus were trying new and different things in response to where they saw the Holy Spirit at work. People in a number of denominations and mission agencies worked together reflecting on the 90’s church-planting movement and beginning a process of investing and pioneering new forms of church. These fresh expressions weren’t simply a fad or an attempt to be cool but looked to address a rapidly changing culture in the UK and a change in attitude to attending church and to a spiritual life. New things were taking place in different contexts, locations, times, as these different expressions sought to re-imagine church for this new environment, whilst staying true to a missional and Christ-centred gospel. In 2004 the Mission Shaped Church Report, instigated by Archbishop Rowan Williams, listened and noticed what was happening, and new language began to develop such as ‘the mixed economy.’ The report went on to make recommendations for the future practice of this pioneering mission movement. It has gone on to be one of the most widely read and purchased Church of England reports ever. It argued that… “The time has come to ensure that any Fresh Expression of Church that emerge within the Church, or are granted a home within it, are undergirded with an adequate ecclesiology” Mission Shaped Church Report All of this was exciting and encouraging for many practitioners at the time who were working hard to disciple people and develop new and imaginative expressions of Church but found them hard to be accepted as ‘church.’ The report recognised their importance, placed value on their role in a ‘mixed economy’ or Church and furthermore recognised the need for the “identification, selection and training of pioneer church planters, for both lay and ordained furthermore recognised the need for the “identification, selection and training of pioneer church planters, for both lay and ordained ministers” (MSC pg.147.) From this the Fresh Expressions initiative was born, as a partnership between the Church of England and the Methodist Church and initially led by Bishop Steven Croft (now Bishop of Oxford) with Revd Peter Pillinger as the Methodist Team Leader. Over the next 15 years new denominational partners joined the movement – the United Reformed Church, the Salvation Army, the Church of Scotland and the Baptist Union of Great Britain – all of whom identify growth and encouragements in these new experiments in Church. The initial team identified: “a Fresh Expression is a form of church for our changing culture established primarily for the benefit of people who are not yet members of any church”

Joss Hughes is a self-taught mosaic artist working from her studio in a beautiful rural setting near Romsey, in Hampshire. When not working on commission, she creates mosaics for sale at local outlets or plans her next adult “Mosaic and Cake” workshop. She marvels at the natural creativity of children taking part in her “Make a Mosaic” parties or in after-school and holiday camp mosaic sessions. Mosaic creations in stained glass and mirror dominate her portfolio however, she also particularly enjoys working with beach-combed sea glass and driftwood. The latter are mainly sourced from her beloved South Cornwall. Other materials she occasionally uses include 'found' objects from the garden or beach, and the commercially available glass tiles and nuggets. After a crafty childhood Joss focused her mind to pursue a career in Paediatric Medicine. Six university years and a further seventeen, mainly working for NHS England, left little time or energy for creativity! Job rotations and RAF deployments (her husband) necessitated living at fourteen different addresses (in the UK and in Australia). Retrospectively she realises that the repetitive home-and-garden making was expressing a hidden natural creativity. Five years ago she made the life- changing decision to say 'goodbye' to Dr J Hughes, Neonatal Doctor, and to say 'hello' to Joss Hughes, mosaic artist. A birthday gift of a two day beginners’ course (Clare Goodall, Oxford) in 2009 had sown the seed of the addictive nature of mosaics. Following up on two chance sightings of the same incredible huge floating mosaic ball, she tracked down the artist and a second two day course (Sue Smith, Devon) in 2014 reignited Joss's passion and introduced her to the media of stained glass and mirror. There followed lots of trial and error at the kitchen table with glass shards flying everywhere before she finally produced a mosaic she felt able to show anyone! Slowly amassing the prerequisites of a basic studio she moved into her own working space and, in May 2017, she decided to officially launch her own business: Peacock Mosaics. In 2018 Joss attended a 5 day residential mosaic course at West Dean College of Arts and Conservation, learning from the fabulous Sonia King. The emphasis was on developing artistic expression. In 2019 Joss became the Editor (a voluntary role) for "GROUT", a thrice yearly publication by the British Association of Modern Mosaic for its members. This has been a superb networking and knowledge-boosting opportunity. She also attended the 2018 and 2019 BAMM Forums, in London and York respectively, furthering her contact with the UK mosaic community. She has had mosaics accepted for exhibition in Penzance, York and Andover during 2019. In 2020 Joss will attend a short course at the London School of Mosaic, with tutor Debra Collis, exploring further her preference for abstract design, and practicing colour studies and andamenti.

I’m Matthew and I’ve been helping my students succeed at school and university since 1992, including over 13,000 hours of one-to-one tuition to over 400 students. My philosophy is: more than higher grades. I teach A level Maths and Further Maths, A level Statistics, and A level Physics. At GCSE level I have worked very successfully with students aiming for a grade 6 and above. I also help undergraduates on courses with mathematical content, such as Economics and Business Studies. My focus is on achieving high grades through understanding the material. I tailor my approach depending on individual needs and interests and I believe in making the subject as simple and enjoyable as possible. I am enthusiastic, friendly and approachable. I really want my students to succeed and I’m very happy to be contacted for help outside of their lesson time. I was recently invited by Talksport Radio to be their “maths expert” to speak on the topic of coin tossing, in the context of determining who bats first in a cricket match. You can read a fuller version of what I said here. UCAS + OXBRIDGE ADVICE It is not enough simply to do well at A level, of course: students need to be given the tools to succeed at university. To that end I take a very full interest in their education generally. As one student recently put it, I am “so much more than just a maths tutor”. For example I give guidance and support with university entrance, including the UCAS personal statement, applying to Oxford and Cambridge, and interview preparation, and I have personal experience of working in both the legal and accounting professions. I’ve written a detailed guide for university applicants: Writing your UCAS personal statement. ACADEMIC HISTORY + TEACHING EXPERIENCE I have an outstanding academic record and over twenty-five years experience as a teacher and examiner, during which I’ve received excellent feedback from my students and their parents. I have tutored over 400 students in Harrogate: that’s over 13,000 hours of one-to-one teaching since I started tutoring in 2006. FEES My fees are £220 per month, which covers four one-hour lessons and ongoing continuous support and help outside of lesson time. I do whatever I can to help my students succeed: I’ve even answered messages from a frantic student at midnight, and I’m always happy to talk to parents and guardians. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Because I tutor full-time, I only teach from my home on Victoria Avenue, in central Harrogate, and online. I teach on weekdays from 4pm to 9pm. Teaching in the classroom showed that school doesn’t work for everyone. For children who are talented in sports, art, or music, or who require extra academic support or challenge, school doesn’t bring out their best. Born in Manchester, Hannah was educated at Altrincham Grammar School for Girls before reading Biological Sciences at New College, Oxford University. She holds a first class Master’s degree from King’s College London and PGCE teaching qualification which is rated ‘Outstanding’. In addition to teaching, Hannah has worked as a Researcher for Oxford University and Reform think tank. She is Director of the Home Schooling Association and continues to teach Science at Key Stage 4 and 5. She speaks regularly at education events and provides written commentary for national media including the BBC, The Times, Telegraph and The Guardian. HEAD OF OPERATIONS LYDIA TITLEY Lydia is originally from Manchester and completed her secondary education at Altrincham Grammar School for Girls. Following this, her interest in French language and culture led her to the University of Bath, where she completed a BSc in International Business Management and French. Lydia took the opportunity to spend a year in Paris where she attended the prestigious business school of ESCP Paris, studying a bilingual Master’s in Management, and worked as a European Account Manager at an international Marketing and Publishing firm. Lydia joined The Golden Circle team in 2018, where she holds the role of Head of Operations. In her spare time, Lydia enjoys yoga and is currently completing a Mindfulness Teacher Training course. She has a keen interest in the arts, theatre and travel.
