I have lived in Nottingham for over 25 years, half in Sherwood and I have a daughter in Year 5. I wanted to contribute something to the local community, so I became a member of the PTA committee and am now Treasurer. I have worked in local government as an accountant for many years, including currently at Nottingham City Council so I have a good understanding of how the public sector works across different areas. Previously I was responsible for monitoring schools financial performance and helping support and challenge schools in financial difficulty to become sustainable. It feels like a natural development to use my skills in supporting the school in ensuring the best use of its budget, especially in this challenging time for school funding. I am also interested in how education can support children’s wider development, by helping them learn ways of maintaining a physically and emotionally healthy life.

Whiteinch Centre is an independent community facility owned by the people of Whiteinch. It provides a hub at the heart of the community making Whiteinch a vibrant place to live, work and play. Our key objectives are to: maintain a sustainable social enterprise led by the local community offer learning, training and employability for local people from west Glasgow and beyond enable community involvement through volunteering support local health and wellbeing, and offer information and advice on relevant issues and opportunities We have over 700 visitors each week, coming from local neighbourhoods from Partick to Drumchapel and more than 50 groups are offering a range of support services and classes across health, learning, employability, arts and crafts and fitness. To ensure that the Centre is a vibrant community hub and local resource we generate income through room and facilities hire. This currently covers around 50% of core costs.

Community Department was established in 1992, with the initial emphasis being on the development of a network of football coaching courses for children and young people, along with the provision of the SFA Coach Education Programme. It is now widely recognised that sport in general and football in particular can be a force for good that can produce numerous social benefits – improving self-esteem, inspiring children and young people, promoting wellbeing and healthy lifestyles, and contributing to social inclusion. As such, Company Owners Steven Mclean and Charlotte Knight in partnership with The National Trust are planting 500 square meters of woodland in the UK to help offset our carbon footprint and also to help ensure UK woodlands keep on flourishing. Our aim is to double this each subsequent year and who knows eventually we may well have just planted a forest (stay tuned)! Further to this, to be more sustainable and socially responsible, our company promise to wherever possible use local independent businesses for our business supplies, travel and accommodation. We recognise as a family-run business, that now more than ever in these uncertain economic times that independent small businesses need our (and others’) support and it is up to us all to help in this. As a national company, our instructors travel large distances and as such our company has a policy of staying locally rather than travelling back and forth up the motorways to minimise our fuel consumption and carbon footprint. We use small independent companies for our accommodation wherever possible, such as independent hotels and B&Bs in the location of our work and use local amenities. In addition to this, we are going as paperless as humanely possible, invoices/remittances are no longer printed but entirely emailed and some of our exam papers are now totally digital. This is something we continue to improve. Our staff even take notes on iPads when meeting with clients rather than notebooks and pens.

IH Bristol was started in 1987 as The Language Project by Val, while studying for her PhD. The school has been teaching students ever since and it is the biggest remaining family owned and operated language school in Bristol. We joined the International House global network of affiliated language schools in 2009 and are proud to be members of such a highly regarded, diverse and vibrant organisation. Over the course of the years we expanded into two beautiful period buildings in the Clifton distric and diversified into teacher training, exams, junior summer - and winter - school and foreign languages. In 2019-2020 we added a new custom-built student common room to our Queens Avenue building, furthering our ambition to always put the student experience first. IH Bristol aims to give back to the community: we have taught many refugee classes in Bristol and have been involved in development projects in Cuba, Angola and Vietnam. We adapter our buildings for Covid very early so that we could facilitate English exams for medical professionals needed by the NHS. And let's not forget our free exercises and our Phrase of the Day videos, which can help students worldwide to increase their knowledge on a daily basis. We are working towards making our operation more environmentally sustainable and have so far installed 100s of ultra low energy light fittings and fixtures and sophisticated heating controls.
