Cultivating research software to support world-class research Software is fundamental to research: 7 out of 10 researchers report their work would be impossible without it. From short, thrown-together temporary scripts to solving a specific problem, through an abundance of complex spreadsheets analysing collected data, to the hundreds of software engineers and millions of lines of code behind international efforts such as the Large Hadron Collider and the Square Kilometre Array, there are few areas of research where software does not have a fundamental role. Since 2010, the Software Sustainability Institute has facilitated the advancement of software in research by cultivating better, more sustainable, research software to enable world-class research (“Better software, better research”). In 2018, we were awarded funding from all seven research councils. Our mission is to become the world-leading hub for research software practice. The Institute is based at the Universities of Edinburgh, Manchester, Oxford and Southampton, and draws on a team of experts with a breadth of experience in software development, training, project and programme management, research facilitation, publicity and community engagement. I am fortunate enough to be the Principal of Homefield College and am delighted that you have found your way to our website to explore the many opportunities that the College provides to support people with learning difficulties and / or disabilities to lead fulfilling lives. Homefield College was founded in 1987 as a long-term residential provision for people with learning and communication difficulties. We have since expanded our offering with specialist further education and training, supporting both part-time and full-time day and residential students. The College now offers a range of individualised vocational education programmes based within local communities. All programmes are tailored to the needs of each individual with the starting point being that they feel safe in the environment that they are in. Once this is achieved it allows our staff to work with them to develop and improve their skills to enable them to live more independently once they leave the College. You will see on the website details of the activities that we provide which put together make up a study programme. Our education provision is based upon our belief that young people achieve through experience and this is reflected in the activities provided in our programmes. Students will undertake work experience and we hope that for some of them this will lead to a supported internship. Beyond the education provision, we also offer residential experiences for those who would like to further develop their independent living skills and this can often provide a period of respite for the student’s family. Homefield also provides a range of services for those who remain as part of our lifelong learning provision. These include: long-term residential care, supported work experiences, day services and community enterprises. Way back in 2002 I took my first breath underwater using scuba equipment. I absolutely loved it! A couple of years later I was in the car with my mum when we went past a sign that said 'Learn to scuba dive today!' We had booked the experience before we got home! A couple of months later I was given a voucher for the PADI Open Water Diver course. We travelled up to Stoney Cove in November 2004 for what I mainly remember as a very cold experience. I was soon a qualified Junior PADI Open Water Diver! I eventually signed up for my DiveMaster course in 2011 - the first professional level when you begin taking responsibility for other divers' training! I loved helping with courses and seeing the sense of achievement on peoples' faces - I could really relate to it - however, I was soon convinced to sign up for my instructor course. I've been a PADI Course Director since 2018 and have had the pleasure of teaching candidates from all walks of life and being just a small part of their journey to what might become a full-time career. I love teaching the professional courses but feel just as comfortable teaching a DSD or Seal Team Course (I am still a child at heart!) If you join an IDC with me, you'll benefit from tailored scheduling to suit your availability and a CD who uses the latest and most up to date tools from PADI to teach you. I am passionate about being inclusive and believe that 'one size definitely does not fit all'. I've had the privilege of instructing in quite a few places around the world, teaching in Egypt, Spain, Kenya, and various countries in the Caribbean. Although by far not an expert in all these different regions, I've learnt a lot about the specific challenges that various areas face.

The author of the courses, Gwynne Richards has over thirty-five years’ experience in warehouse management and logistics. He began his career with BRS a forerunner of Exel Logistics which later became part of DHL. He then went on to work for Dawson Group, Lane Group, Nedlloyd Districenters and DHL. Roles included Business Development Manager, Regional Manager, National Sales Manager, Customer Services and IT Manager. He founded his own logistics consultancy and training company in 2003. Gwynne works with companies through both training and consultancy to improve their logistics operations, benchmark performance and decide whether to outsource or not.  His three-day face to face course on Warehouse Management is sponsored by the UKWA.  The online Warehouse Management course available here is endorsed by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. (see below) He has recently co-written the Warehouse Manager’s Certificate of Professional Competence course which is accredited by the CILT and operated by the United Kingdom Warehousing Association (UKWA). He is a visiting lecturer in Supply Chain at Warwick University.  He is the Course Director for the Diploma in Logistics Management which is provided through North Kent Colledge and Lloyd’s Maritime Academy. Gwynne has also lectured at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok and The Singapore Institute of Management.  He runs courses in the UK, India, Malaysia, China, UAE, Africa and The Philippines. He has also produced on-line courses in Warehouse Management, Freight transport and warehousing and Logistics Outsourcing. He is a Fellow of both the CILT and the ITOL. He is a Practising Associate of the Academy of Experts. His book on Warehouse Management published by Kogan Page has sold over 20,000 copies worldwide. A fifth edition will be launched in 2025. The book has been translated into five other languages. A book on Logistics and Supply Chain tools was published in July 2016. It is also in its fourth edition. He has also co-authored a book on Logistics Outsourcing which was published in December 2019.
