Tiny Tickers is a small national charity with big ambitions. We’ve got a proud track record of helping improve the detection, care and treatment of babies with serious heart conditions, and we have exciting plans to do even more to help in the future. We were founded in 1999 by world-renowned fetal cardiologist Dr Helena Gardiner, when she realised many of the babies she was caring for could have been helped earlier. Our chief executive, Jon Arnold, is the parent of a child who has had open heart surgery for a major defect, and he heads our team of staff and volunteers based throughout the UK. Mission and need We want to increase early detection rates of cardiac conditions because we know that spotting a defect early can improve a baby’s chances of survival and long-term quality of life. Around 6,000 babies are born with a serious heart defect in the UK each year, and around 1,000 of these newborns head home with no one realising their lives are in danger. We are changing that. We train sonographers to spot defects during routine pregnancy scans; support families with a diagnosis; campaign to improve service standards; raise awareness; and support academic research. Susan had friends who were autistic and thought she knew a lot about autism. Whilst working in Retirement Housing, Susan had a communication breakdown with an Autistic Resident which led her to pursue Autism Awareness Training. Susan attended an Autism Awareness Course delivered by Helen Storey MBE, founder of Triple A Project. During the course, Susan realised that her own daughter, Daniella could be Autistic. Daniella met Helen and became a volunteer at Triple A, not thinking she was autistic, until she also attended the course and said it explained her whole life. The path to getting a diagnosis was long and extremely frustrating. After 2 years, Daniella was diagnosed Autism (Aspergers) and passionately co-delivered Autism Awareness Training with Helen and others.

The BSMFT has been set up to promote Myofunctional Therapy (MFT) with an interdisciplinary approach, integrating knowledge and methods from different disciplines and working collaboratively with a common purpose to set goals, make decisions and share resources and responsibilities. Our board is made up of a team of clinicians from different disciplines working with MFT, keen to promote collaborative clinical work and further research in MFT. Working with patients, we support each other to undertake assessments, diagnosis, intervention, goal-setting and the creation of care plans, involving patients, their families and carers in any discussions about their condition, prognosis and treatment plan. The BSMFT is designed to support clinicians across the UK and internationally to build interdisciplinary teams. Our clinical board is happy to guide members in the right direction on their MFT journey, sharing resources, protocols and strategies and learning together from existing and past clinical cases.

Previously known as Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant 2000, Bright Red has supported haematology treatment and research within the north of England since 1988. Thanks to our combined investment of over £6 million into haematology; diagnosis, treatment and research within the region has gone from strength to strength. The region is now the second largest bone marrow transplant centre within the UK, treating an increasing number of patients from outside the area. These patients choose to come to the north of England due to the high standard of care and number of specialists in the region. Our vision is to make the region the safest place in the UK, if not the world, to be treated for blood cancer. Bright Red aims to improve the lives and treatment of people with blood cancer across the north of England. Through care, research and education we are striving to beat illnesses such as leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma myelodysplasia and myeloproliferative diseases.
