/my name is Amanda and I’m an Abdominal Therapy Practitioner and Educator. I also offer Holistic massage and Energy work in the Tradition of the Maya. My story begins in the mists of time when I was raising my wonderful offspring. Being interested in complementary therapy I used this period in my life to learn about a variety of therapies and techniques that could help my children through their early years and beyond. When my children flew the nest, I felt the calling to become a complementary therapist and embarked on a life-changing journey. In 2005 on the insistence of a great friend Hilary Lewin, I attended an amazing class based on the work of Dr Rosita Arvigo. This workshop had a profound effect on my whole being. I felt the power of the work, I observed the changes in my body as I practised my abdominal massage at home. I could not believe that such a sweet simple technique could have such a profound effect. My journey had begun, I wanted to not only learn the technique but also understand why it seemed to help with so many health challenges. They say the right teacher will appear when the time is right and I have been blessed. I trained directly with Rosita Arvigo, the founder of the work I now offer in my clinic and the classroom. Understanding the similarities between Maya Medicine and Chinese medicine, in 2011, I travelled to Thailand and studied traditional Thai Massage with the renowned traditional healer, Bann Hom who lives in Chaing Mai, Northern Thailand. It did not surprise me to find her treating her community with an abdominal technique that was not a million miles from the work I knew and loved. I have been inspired by Gil Hedley, the brilliant anatomist who offers dissection classes for anyone who is interested in observing the anatomical connections within the human form. Marty Ryan – Love your Guts Seminars, taught me how to listen to my hands, his palpation classes revealed what was beneath the skin. Life is for learning and every belly I touch teaches me something new. And so, to now, in September 2020 working with a passionate group of educators and colleagues including Rosita Arvigo I became a founding member of the Abdominal Therapy Collective.

Over recent months, much thought has been given to our key educational priorities, as we seek to enhance every aspect of our provision. High quality academics, committed pastoral care and excellent co-curricular opportunities form the cornerstones of that ambition. When a pupil moves on from Edgeborough, they will do so with a legacy of experience, knowledge, curiosity and the confidence to successfully navigate their onward journey. It is important that we remain focused on the fact that great schools are grown by what is achieved in and outside the classroom; the quality of teaching, breadth of opportunity and strength of community. Pupils learn best when they can actively interact with their learning, developing skills which can transfer across subject areas and when the enormous benefits of learning beyond the immediate classroom setting are realised. Our commitment to deliver this vision is unwavering and there is a great sense of excitement as we set our compass to make further progress. For such depth of ambition there is also a need to ensure that we have the appropriate infrastructure to support our educational vision. Consequently, we have commissioned a detailed analysis of current facilities against future requirements. Although new buildings will be introduced where appropriate, the aim is to redevelop existing spaces where possible and to minimise new construction. This approach significantly reduces disruption on the site and allows for projects to remain cost-effective and environmentally sustainable. Having an infrastructure plan to support our educational vision ensures that we avoid piecemeal developments over the coming years, which could otherwise result in a poorly considered future site. It also allows us to prioritise key developments based on cost, condition and need. With the repurposing of some existing spaces certain projects will need to be prioritised to allow space for subsequent developments to take place. The rate that proposed projects are delivered depends on the future performance of the School, the wider economic climate and the required planning consents. Our highly experienced Leadership Team and Governing Board will work with ambition balanced with measure. Excitingly, this summer has already seen the full refurbishment of five Senior Block classrooms, spaces designed specifically for modern teaching and learning. Plans are also already in progress for the next phase of works. This is a tremendously exciting time to be part of the Edgeborough community as we work with our Charterhouse partners to take our ambitious plans forward. Communicators Training Associates Limited is an independent training provider based in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham with training facilities on site. We also deliver at outreach centres in Spennymoor, Crook and Darlington. In addition to the programmes we support, we provide ‘drop in’ sessions and host ‘information days’ at all our locations and more recently have launched our ‘virtual learning platform’ to enable everyone to learn from home. We have built an excellent reputation for giving a quality support offer to those who come to our sessions using a mix of classroom based activities on both a one-to-one and group-based setting, coupled with high quality online learning to help learners gain qualifications improving their life chances through gaining personal skills, moving to further learning, taking up volunteering opportunities and securing employment. Our employed learners tell us that the skills they learn during their time with us helps them progress in their job role. With flexibility in mind Communicators hosts a virtual learning platform providing e-learning to those individuals who want to study from home or their workplace. The Company was set up by our Managing Director Isobel Currie in 1999, and the following year we secured a contract for supported online learning with Ufi/learndirect. Initially set up to accommodate ICT training needs for companies across the North East, we rapidly widened the scope and range of our programmes to include NVQs in Management, Advice and Guidance, Administration, Customer Service, and Cleaning,; at the same time we introduced accredited programmes in Maths, English, Work Skills, Personal and Social Skills and Customer Service. Over the last 18 months we have further expanded the offer to include CSCS (for construction) and a suite of Community Learning Programmes called ‘My Future Matters’ which have been devised to support those who are furthest away from employment to find appropriate and sustainable work. Isobel maintained a continuous relationship with learndirect up until July 2017, becoming one of the longest serving members of the then network and securing several major, national quality and performance achievement awards on a regular basis including ‘Learner Support Staff’; Working with Employers’, Moving Learners into Work’ and overall ‘Best Delivery Centre. An enduring theme throughout this time has been the support given to the local community, DWP and Job Centres, various local charities, many, many employers and Her Majesty’s Prison Service in Durham. Since the closure of learndirect, Communicators has gone on to secure new contracts to support the continuation of the service with System Group, Durham County Council and most recently was awarded a Prime Contract with Tees Valley Combined Authority. Isobel believes that the success of Communicators is based on the dedicated team of Tutors and Administrators who are trained to a high standard to support our learning provision. A high proportion started their journey with Communicators as volunteers, some are former learners and all have gone on to become very valued members of a thriving team. Everyone in the Team put our learners at the heart of the operation with the genuine and embedded aim to help every learner achieve their full potential - whether they are employed or unemployed. We believe that by living and breathing our Values, each and everyone of us look to make our Vision a reality. We have successfully retained the Matrix accreditation validating the quality of our Information, Advice and Guidance services since inception. During our recent re-assessment, learners interviewed commented on the willingness of staff to provide encouragement and support tailored to them as individuals. This support was felt to be delivered by approachable, non-judgmental staff who are committed to ensuring learners achieve their goals. The weekly Assessment Days and IAG provided throughout a stay with Communicators ensures they are very clear about their learning pathway and options. There were also numerous examples provided about the difference the support had made to them, particularly helping to overcome mental health problems and lack of confidence and self-esteem. Learners interviewed were very clear about what they could expect from Communicators, and were very complimentary about our company. Many of them shared their own stories of how we had made an impact on their lives, with some saying: ‘I don’t think I would still be around if I hadn’t come to Communicators.’ ‘They really do sit and listen to you’. ‘They spend lots of time getting to know you, it’s a relaxed atmosphere and I don’t want to go home at the end’. ‘You spend a lot of time talking about your goals and aspirations, they are always positive’ ‘They make you aware of the choices and guide you, I was adamant I wanted to do IT but when we sat and talked about Maths and English, I realised it would be easier if I got those qualifications first.’ ‘I can’t believe how far I’ve come in a short period of time.’ ‘I’ve got dyslexia and they have helped me understand what it is and how it affects me, I’m getting lots of support.’ ‘Lots of encouragement, you are accepted for who you are, made to feel straight away part of the group.’ ‘Whenever I’ve not understood or struggled, the tutors have been there to guide me through, without them I wouldn’t have progressed as well.’

Camp Crusoe is the quintessentially British summer camp experience where campers feel connected, valued, challenged, and supported. We take having fun incredibly seriously and believe that as modern childhood is all too short we must help our kids make the most of every moment of it. While school work is a vital part of our children’s development, so too is holiday time: Camp Crusoe is very much a fun and adventurous camp and not a summer school! We are the perfect size. There are plenty of opportunities to make new friends with no more than 80 campers per session. We know every camper by name, what interests them, if they need extra support or just an open stage to shine. Over the course of camp, community bonds are forged that last well after campers return home, sometimes a lifetime. Having seen first hand how our American cousins get it so right when it comes to summer camps, we feel it is essential that every child has the opportunity to get away from home each year and enjoy a new environment, testing themselves, trying new things and making new friends, all while having fun in the great outdoors. Too much time seems to be spent cooped up with electronic gadgetry of one sort or another when there is so much fun to be had outdoors, playing with other kids in a safe and controlled setting. Our extensive program of activities from water-sports to drama, archery to photography, appeal to every type of child, offering the opportunity for each camper to grow in confidence, improve their decision making skills and maybe discover a new lifelong hobby. We don’t try to cram too much in and allow just the right amount of time for campers to hangout, make new friends and play together. We are a small, independent camp run by a close-knit team of friends and family who are committed to enriching children’s lives. The core group have many years experience working with children both on summer camps and in the classroom, and are supported by a highly trained and motivated team of camp counsellors, many of whom have worked at camp before and are planning a career working with children. Camp Crusoe is about allowing children the time and space to be exactly that - children. Fun and personal development is our ultimate aim, but we also know from experience how much children learn at camp, both about themselves and about being part of something larger than them.
