Steelworking still has a presence in Workington in the shape of the TSP heavy engineering works. The last part of the main steelworks disappeared in 2005 with the closure of the rail mil and long welded rail plant. Rails had been made in Workington and exported over the world for 128 years. Leyland established its national factory in 1971 at nearby Lillyhall. Over a life of less than a quarter of a century the factory despatched thousands of Nationals, Lynxes, Olympians, Titans and rail buses. As well as being bus (and rail) enthusiasts, we want to mark the unique contribution of the town to the country’s economic and cultural development. WTHT (Workington Transport Heritage Trust) Our vehicles include a number of buses, fire engines and other vehicles some of which are used in community events. Volunteers are engaged in restoring, maintaining and operating these historic vehicles. We have an extensive archive of local bus and rail material. This includes posters, signs, publicity materials, books, magazines, drawings, photographs, and petrol pumps. Our shop at Workington railway station sells hot & cold drinks, snacks, souvenirs, WTHT branded items and second hand books. It is by the main waiting room and, in normal times, it is open Mon to Saturday from 9am to 2pm, closed on bank holidays. All hours are subject to volunteer availability. Using our heritage buses, we usually run local free bus services on Boxing Day, plus park and ride services at a number of local shows. Our premises are home to around 16 of our own vehicles plus 11 privately owned guest vehicles. Not all of these are currently fit for the road. We work with groups which include Cumbria Omnibus Group, The 550 Group, Barrow Transport Group, Carlisle Bus Group, and a number of individual owners. We have two sites only one of which has a building – but we are working on curing this fault! We are grateful for the support of our members, and local businesses including Stagecoach North West and Northern Rail. We have volunteering opportunities in all aspects of restoring, maintaining and driving vehicles. Also in buildings and site maintenance, cataloguing & running our archive, producing educational materials, running trips and events, and fundraising.

She spent hours drawing and painting and could write fiction better than most college students. Yet, she loathed school. She rarely spoke in class, dropped out of the gifted and talented program, either didn’t do her homework or would forget to turn it in. She had As on the tests and Cs and Ds in the class. Jane’s academic future looked dismal. Poor grades and high test scores are not a winning combination for college admission. Her public school was not the right place for her, but neither were the local private schools. Academically-oriented private schools do not accept students with poor grades. Schools that accept students with poor grades are not always academically rigorous. Stalemate. Until we started FlexSchool. Jane spent six years at FlexSchool, learned to love learning again, graduated in 2020, and attends a well-known liberal arts college studying anthropology, linguistics, map-making, and art.

Shalamar Children’s Homes – Isola, Cairn, and shortly Glebeland – are based in family-sized houses around rural Essex. We are residential children’s homes with a therapeutic approach. Our aim is to resolve issues in young people and not to merely contain them. We achieve this by using attachment-based care and to look for the communication behind any behaviour. We believe behaviour is a form of communication. We would look for the meaning behind all negative behaviour in the young people within our care. From this, we work with our young people helping them to not only to control their negative behaviours, but also attempting to work through the issues which are the cause of these behaviours. Shalamar carers use Dan Hughes’ PACE method to gain a positive attachment with the young people within our care. PACE stands for Playfulness – Acceptance – Curiosity – Empathy. Given time, we aim to create a stable, secure base and safe haven for all young people staying at Shalamar, allowing the space and the confidence to heal and develop. At Shalamar, there are daily community meetings where young people have the opportunity to voice any issues they have with their care, or state how it can be improved. This space allows for the young people to feel listened to, raising their confidence, self-esteem and making them feel valued and cared for. Shalamar’s work looks to change the negative way that young people view themselves and the adults around them. Through attachment-based nurture we restore their self-belief and provide positive experiences with adults who care. Therefore we treat the child at their developmental/emotional age, rather than strict biological age. This creates a realistic and settled environment for the young person who can succeed and receive praise for their work and efforts. We also provide a psychodynamic behavioural approach, which is worked alongside the attachment framework, where we bring the subconscious to the conscious. This allows the young people to understand why they are feeling and acting the way they are and is the first step to taking control of their actions.

HISTORY AND ETHOS Traditional academic education since 1865 – bringing out the best in all children. Lime House School has strong roots in the local community and has offered a traditional academic education since the late 19th century. The school was formally established in 1899 in Wetheral, a small village located five miles to the east of Carlisle. In 2012, three Lime House School reports emerged dated 1865, adding another 34 years to the school’s long history. The school moved to its present location at Hawkesdale near the village of Dalston in 1947, and initially operated as a traditional prep school for boys up to the age of 13 under the leadership of a Mr Lovelock which continued throughout the 1950s and early 1960s. In the 1960s the school was owned and run by a pioneering headmaster, Mr PJ Ingrams, who admitted girls to the school and introduced O Levels and A levels. Mr Ingrams led the school until his untimely disappearance on a climbing expedition to the Andes in 1974. After a short period with Mr A Templeton-Turner as Headmaster, the school was purchased by the owners of Riverston International in London and Mr M Lewis took over as head in 1977. The school continued to grow, partly due to the closure of two local independent schools, Grosvenor House and Overwater School in Carlisle, and in 1983 was purchased by three local businessmen with children at the school led by Mr W Brotherton. School numbers continued to grow and extra boarding houses were created in the local area, in particular at Greensyke Farm where the Junior School moved to and the girls became housed at ‘The Oaks’ in Dalston. Lime House School was purchased from Mr W Brotherton and his family in 1998 by Mr Nigel Rice, Headmaster from 1983 until his retirement in 2017, his wife Mrs Diane Rice, Senior Housemistress and Head of Learning Support and the Bursar, Ms Jackie Fisher. Under their combined ownership Lime House has flourished to become the unique school it is today, offering an exceptional academic education to all children within a stimulating and supportive atmosphere.
