Carrie has over 30 years’ experience in education - now Director of Curriculum for the Brooke Weston Trust and a visiting fellow for Ambition Institute delivering NPQ training, Carrie was at that time the Principal of Peckover Primary School in Wisbech; a school with 54% of pupils, originating from many parts of Europe, having English as an additional language. This was a challenge that she tackled with great enthusiasm and creativity! Our first step was to re-write the curriculum completely, ensuring children were exposed to high quality texts and a wide range of vocabulary. Our classroom environments immersed children in their learning and our mantra was ‘talk, talk and more talk’. We planned structured oral opportunities into all our lessons, using the excellent ‘Tower Hamlets, ‘progression in Language structures; we had continuous provision from Nursery through to year 2 centred on language rich environments and opportunities. However, we discovered that once our pupils had acquired enough English to let them read, write and converse fluently, the progress of some began to plateau. These could be pupils who weren’t speaking their first language much at home, or reading books in it. In some cases, pupils were starting to lose their first language altogether, making it harder to build and develop their English. We sent a set of BeeLingual UK dual-language books home with every EAL child, so they could read stories in their first language and in English with their parents We used our bilingual Teaching Assistants to lead daily first language discussion groups to develop a rich and challenging vocabulary We used colourful discussion mats to pre-teach pupils in first language and English, deploying them alongside stems based on Progression in Language Structures Our pastoral team used first language emotion cards to help pupils describe and explain their feelings We introduced a ‘no hands up’ policy to promote lively class discussion We taught the whole schools songs in first languages and English Using the resources we were developing at BeeLingual UK, we introduced a whole raft of strategies to cultivate a rich vocabulary in first language and subsequently in English.

Hannah entered the field of wellbeing by default after having her own personal experience of hitting ‘rock bottom’. She had spent 9 years being owner/operator of a couple of NZ’s top hospitality businesses, during which time she worked extremely hard and at times played pretty hard too. Hannah burnt out as did her relationship with her partner, who was also her business partner. It didn’t end well, she lost everything – businesses, income, house, relationship and experienced anxiety and depression for a period of time as a single Mum with two very young children. For Hannah, she only had one choice and that was to change the way she thought. Learning how the body worked in relation to the mind and how to activate primal resources we all have inside ourselves was what lead Hannah to start the first holistic workplace wellbeing company in New Zealand so she could inspire, motivate and share tools to support others. Along the way Hannah trained with leaders in their fields when it came to studying mind/body exercise, the importance of the breath, our hormones (the feel good and stress ones) and that the simple and powerful choices we can make. She has trained with Wim Hof, founder of the Wim Hof Method, Dr Kataria, founder of Laughter Yoga and Nic Marks, founder of the Five Ways to Wellbeing. After reconnecting with Hannah in 2017, there was a real synergy in the direction Jo was going with a high focus on personal coaching which frequently turned into wellbeing type conversations. She introduced Hannah to HBDI and she was hooked! Together they developed a Whole Brain Wellbeing plan and workshops to match. It was very clear that taking a whole brain approach to developing workshops and wellbeing itself, would ensure that everyone is accounted for. One size doesn’t fit all for learning or wellbeing. By understanding thinking preferences and taking a whole brain approach: varying initiatives and content would appeal to everyone, no matter who they are strategies and programmes would engage more people people would learn how to communicate better, how to understand their colleagues and how to feel more empathy and respect for each other Their varying skills led them to go into business together and very quickly they developed The Wellbeing Challenge web app based on the Five Ways to Wellbeing which has had great results. A wellbeing platform, Your Wellbeing Matters is to be launched in 2020. Her business partner, Jo Fife, entered the business a number of years later when the two of them re-connected after many years and started having a conversation about a neurometric measuring tool Jo had been using for many years, which is based on how people prefer to think (not their skills and capabilities). Commonly intervention become something that is “done to us” and with each level of support an individual loses a little bit more control or ability to manage that area of their life. Enable seeks to address the question “what do people need in order to get back in the driving seat of their lives”? Enable exists to support, coach and mentor forward. Ultimately the journey and the choices remain that of an individual. We will help, however, to help identify skills, strategies and community to help someone fully engage with life. Each Journey is individual and the process starts from exactly where a person is. We take time to get to know our participants. Each six-module programme uses the same model; but crucially is individually tailored. With empathy we listen, and walk with, those on the programme though to a place of empowerment. About Maree Kivlichan Maree is the founder and managing director of Enable. Maree has a wealth of experience helping others to overcome barriers and achieve their goals. Having positively addressed and broken through the darkness of her own serious mental health issues, she has progressed to extending help to others. Maree has been privileged to speak to professionals across many industries about the benefits of social inclusion, fostering of purpose and improved mental health. With delight, empathy and kindness generated from personal experience, Maree comes alongside participants and relates to their struggles. Although people may have entered the process without hope, and or purpose, they are empowered, encouraged to identify their own life goals and to fulfil their potential. They gain a sense of identity and belonging. Maree Kivlichan "In my role of Operations Manager working on DWP funded programmes I worked very closely with Maree Kivlichan. The purpose of the programs was to move clients forward to a position where they had improved their lives and then and (hopefully) into work. Maree impressed me on many occasions with her ability to engage with clients who in the main had many challenges facing them. The large majority of these clients were lacking in motivation and self-belief and would lay out their issues (both real and perceived) before them whenever they were asked or expected to engage in anything. Maree was always very honest and truthful when discussing issues with clients however had a certain way with them which enabled Maree to engage with the clients in their current situation whilst having the skills to explore with the clients what their vision or goal was and then guiding them towards achieving this goal using small achievable steps. I can particularly remember Maree facilitating a small group of 6 extremely hard to help clients with multiple barriers that stopped them moving forward, one dropped out after the first day, the rest stayed for the whole programme and even requested to attend sessions with Maree after the course had closed, Maree continued to work with them and this resulted in all of the clients having moved forward in their lives (taken from evaluations at the time) and two actually gained meaningful employment."
